Hey Guys!
I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for all UTMB Galveston's Spring 2012 traditional bsn applicants. Have you all started to apply yet or at least looked at the application? What do you think? How are your personal statements/testing going? If you guys have anything worth discussing please post and good luck to all!
I called and talked to the SON and was told some interesting information. All newly admitted students get a background check done on them that takes 4 months to complete. (I don't know if this is a new thing, she also said they are working on a completely new system so I think this might be new. It mentions something on the website.)
SON said that the background check HAS to be completed before the semester starts in January. She said this means that they have to have their admission decisions made 4 months before the start of the semester so that the check can be completed. She said because of this, they are trying to be quick and timely with their decisions and that interview invites would be coming "fairly soon." I got all this information last week.
I pulled this from UTMB's website:
New Accelerated and Traditional BSN Students:
All new students will be required to complete a Board of Nursing (BON) background check FOUR MONTHS PRIOR TO ADMISSION. This comprehensive FBI and Homeland Security search will replace the background check required after graduation. If an issue is discovered, students will be contacted by the BON and may be required to obtain a declaratory order, which costs $150 and may require four months to process.
that's very interesting. i've been wondering about the bon background check and actually just emailed them about it this morning. the tx board of nursing website doesn't provide any information about this. the site seems to be geared more toward practicing nurses looking to renew their license, etc. i would assume then that utmb will arrange our background checks with the board if/when necessary. and in that case, maybe we will be hearing sooner than later!
Congrats on San Jac and COM acceptances, Rocket! I'm applying to both of those programs as well, not to mention UTHSC, UHV, HCC Coleman, Lone Star, and Alvin. I'm pretty much just ready to get my education started, and don't mind the ADN route since there are so many convenient RN-to-BSN programs out there.
I think you had mentioned earlier possibly starting at an ADN program and then dropping it if you get in at UTMB. I've been thinking about that too if I hear back from an ADN program first. I'm at the point in my life (28 years old, married, and ready for at least the option of having kids) where I'm done wasting time and will take the first offer I get. But I've also had in mind that if I get accepted and register at Coleman, Lone Star, or whoever else, but then get accepted into a BSN program, I'll just swallow whatever fees I've already paid, drop the ADN program, and start at the BSN program. It would be nice if we could know before making those first payments, but a grand or thereabouts is not a bad loss when you consider saving the RN-to-BSN time and money later!
At least you've got some definite possibilities already, though. All the programs I'm applying to are for January 2012, so it's too early for me to have any real peace of mind yet.

I feel the same way.... I want to get my career started so badly so my life can start! I am 26 and am kicking myself HARD for not doing this YEARS ago! I would rather knock out that BSN in less time than the ADN.... If I go to a Fall ADN prgram I will finish in May 2013...UTMB would give me my BSN by April 2013. BUT.... I will take what I can get and do a RN-BSN transition if I don't make the cut for Spring.

I suppose now's a good time for my first post.
I applied to the UTMB Bacc2 program last year for a January 2011 start, and I didn't interview until Sept. 24 of last year. My understanding was that was the first of two days of Bacc2 interviews (if I remember correctly) and that Traditional BSN interviews were going on in and around that date also. I think they had intended to start interviews earlier than that, but that's when they ended up happening. So my advice to everyone is just to make sure you've got everything in order, and try to find something to do besides stare at the calendar!
FYI, I was waitlisted, but not chosen. Hoping for better luck this year!
