HI! I am applying for the traditional BSN program at UTMB that starts Fall 2012. I am taking my TEAS this friday and I wanted to know if anyone else here is applying for the same semester. Hopefully there are others so I don't have to be nervous alone!!
Its a 4 semester program. We would go Fall 2012, Spring 2013, Summer 2013, & Fall 2013. We would graduate and be done by the new year!!!
Unless something major has changed, this is your degree plan
Fall start:
Fall 2012
Spring 2013
Fall 2013
Spring 2014
If you begin in the spring:
Spring 2013
Summer 2013
Fall 2013
Spring 2013
Only the Bacc2 students have December graduation.
At the February Info Session they informed us that traditional BSN students will no longer take the Summer off. So, the fall 2012 class will attend Fall 2012, Spring 2013, Summer 2013, and Fall 2013 with December graduation. It sounded like it was a fairly new decision.
I'm excited about graduating five months earlier than expected, but I also thought a break for the Summer would be nice, especially if I could get a summer student nursing internship at one of the local hospitals to practice my clinical skills.

Don't write that in stone. Our class was told we *would* have summer school during our orientation in August and we planned accordingly. Just this very week, we were informed that they could not accommodate the class for clinical placement and not all students would be in summer school.
One very negative thing about this school, okay, two. Horrible lack of communication and they will turn on you like crazy!! Never believe anything happens until after it's already done! Other than that, not a bad place.
And yes, there are extern positions available and the hospitals like UTMB students. However, they are 40 hr/wk positions, so they are not possible to participate in if you have summer classes.
I spoke to Dr. ******** and **** ****** about the decision to go through the summer program. They informed me that it was a fairly new choice, and that it will be going into effect for the next Fall. I asked them what had changed, and they said that they had MORE teachers available during the summer now that could work through. I remember that they originally had informed last Spring that there would be no Fall graduation, but that you could take summer classes to lighten your 3rd semesters work load. They said that most students liked their summer off so they could relax a bit...... But something must have changed for them to completely alter the program. She said that it doesn't affect the students currently attending school, just anyone starting in the Fall. That they couldn't accomodate until next year. I hope that they won't change their minds.... that is the only reason why I didn't want to go to UTMB.... I don't want the summer off. I want to graduate a full semester early. I guess only time will tell
So an update.... I was waiting to figure out if I was gonna have good news to share.. Well I don't I spoke to one of the admins for admission, and she was looking into my transcripts because based off of how they calculate grades I should qualify for early admittance.... Well.... whoever input my info didn't input my grades right, they calculated the classes that are over 5 years old that I retook, and I was told that they would not be used to consider my admittance. Well.... I was told that they would recalculate my GPA, but that at this point early admit is done. I was told that the committee would not meet again until Feb 27th, and that is when they will start deciding who is getting interviews. I was told that I should get an interview though because my grades are fantastic as well as my test scores..... Ugh! This sucks that someone screwed up! I could be admitting to everyone right now that I was admitted but now I am just saying someone screwed up.... Here is to hoping that I get an interview
Good Luck everyone.... So first set of emails should be going out next week if they are meeting on the 27th....
Hemphia,I read your post and truly hurt for you. It's really tough when we work so hard and face setbacks that are out of our control. Please do not lose hope! Your grades are great and I have no doubt you will get an interview! I truly believe the odds are in your favor! Hopefully interview requests will be sent out soon and relieve stress for everybody!
I couldn't agree more with punkydoodles!! Things change in the blink of an eye - and as punkydoodles told our class 'the key to surviving this school is flexibility' And she wasn't joking. You kind of have to have the 'I'll believe it when I see it' outlook. Stay positive but don't believe anything until it is set in stone. (and even after that, it could still change) lol
Graduating early is the main reason why I chose to apply for the Spring semester, so I understand the benefits of it. :) They are also going to be accepting BACC2 students in the Summer semester, now...if I'm not mistaken that's new, too.
Good luck to you all! And don't get discouraged if some get interviews and you don't! There will be more rounds to come. :) Just stay positive!
Hemphia- At the February info session I stayed late to talk to the admissions rep to get clarification on the "only the last 5 years being reviewed" issue. I was told that the admissions office calculates everything into your GPA but the SON application reviewers then choose to only really look at the last 5 years. I was slightly disappointed, because like you, I would qualify by the standards we were told there as an early admit candidate if they did not take old credits into account up front (3.9overall, 4.0 science, and 87 TEAS). So Unfortunately, we have to wait this one out and hope for an interview.
Keep your chin up, and hopefully we will hear good news soon!!
