This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)
I'm applying with the following stats:
Pre-req GPA: 3.21
Science GPA: 3.66
Overall GPA: 2.81
I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)
Good luck to everyone!!
OK so, as my boyfriend who graduated UTMB explained to me, admission is based on 3 things.
1. (and most important) Nursing Pre-Req GPA
2. Science GPA
3. Entrance Test (Hesi A2 in our case)
Since they eliminated the interview, the process boils down to a numbers game. The 80 applicants with the best GPAs will get in (entrance exams can be tie breakers). They do this to ensure the chosen few will be the most likely to pass the NCLEX, thereby making the school look "good". If anyone is not admitted to the program this time around, the best thing to do is to retake whatever classes you made B's or lower in to bring those up to A's. I've read it's only advantageous to retake classes once, though.
This is my understanding of the process and if anyone knows something more (or if I'm hella wrong), please share.

Encephalon, I'm not sure if that order is right. The HESI might be weighted more- the NCLEX pass rate is a *huge* deal- so if you had a great HESI score, it could help a slightly lower GPA. The pre-reqs courses that make up your nursing and science GPAs aren't really indicative of the type of coursework and the tests you'll be taking in Nursing school. My guess is that they use a certain HESI score as a minimum and then sort the remaining people by GPAs.
Does UTMB still require the application essay- the "why do you want to be a nurse" thing? That's the main reason I never applied to UTMB- I hate writing essays! :)
Found this interesting information today. I've been hearing that pharmacology won't transfer to UT, which I am currently enrolled in. However, upon reading this, it seems that I may be able to petition for the credit.

I've been told that the HESI exam is an indicator of how well a student will do in the program, the higher the score the better a student will do in the program. I'm guessing programs have to be sure they pick the highest of the lot to keep their NCLEX pass rates high.
