UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

In Fall 2011 1600 people applied; the avg Nursing Pre-Req GPA of those accepted was 3.5

Are you saying that for my class, the ones who started Fall 2011, there were 1600 applicants? If so, wow! Someone told us it was only about 1,000.

Yes, I know; 1600 people*! I was shocked. They didn't say what the avg science GPA was. I'm sorry I didn't ask. Katy, don't worry about your overall GPA. Your pre-req GPA and science GPA are the only grades they look at.

*Edit: The woman on stage named Brandy (I don't recall her last name) said they had 1600 applicants to the Fall 2011 program.

Whew.....Thank Goodness!!! My pre-req and science GPA's are both good!!

I didn't find out about the Academic Fresh Start program until after I had submitted my application, but it's OK. I didn't really want to take all those history and english classes again anyway :)

The funny thing is that I have a really good reason for leaving school my last semester, thus the reason for my less than stellar overall GPA, but since they did away with the personal interview, I will never get to explain myself.

Hopefully my pre-req, and science GPA's combined with my Hesi scores will be enough to get me an acceptance letter !!!!

ok. just got back from the info session (biked there, it was a nice ride). i left early cause they switched from admissions questions and started on clinical stuff. (not important to me unless i'm accepted)

here is what i noted (brought my pen and everything):

-850 applicants to the spring semester

wow 850 applicants!! the thing is how many of those applicants clog up the admissions process because they're skirting around the bare minimum.

-in fall 2011 1600 people applied; the avg nursing pre-req gpa of those accepted was 3.5

i think the majority of us here on allnurses definitely qualify.

-having a pre-req gpa of 3.25 or better makes you competitive

-gpa is the most important thing they look at

oh man, the higher the pre-req gpa the better the chances a person has to get into the program. :D

-critical score on hesi considered competitive between 750-1000 (also the min is 750)

-retaking classes to get a's will improve your chances of acceptance but (quoting ms. mendoza) "retaking them 5 or 6 times doesn't look good"

an advisor once told me that retaking courses is looked upon negatively especially for the sciences.

-letters of recommendation and personal statements are not looked at so "please stop sending them"

-applications no longer roll over to the next semester, so you must re-apply and pay additional application fees

-letters go out by nov 15 but they're hoping it will be sooner :yeah:

since there is no interview or writing sample required i'm hoping the letters will go out sooner.

-college transcripts and hesi scores stay on file for 2 years (if one is not accepted to the semester)

-someone asked: what can i do to increase my chances of getting in? reply: since there are no longer interviews or writing samples to complete, your gpa is going to be the most important thing followed by your hesi entrance score.

- having all 60 credits completed does not give an advantage in the selection process.

-courses from accredited universities and colleges are weighted the same (ex. going to uta and obtaining credits gives no advantage over going to lone star college and obtaining credits)

-volunteer hours give no advantage

-gpa, gpa, gpa :clown:

-undergraduate gpa not considered in admission process (only pre-req and science)

ok those are the most important things i took from the info session. i'm feeling really hopeful. we'll know soon enough!

gpa is definitely the most important part of our applications. i'm getting very nervous because alot of applicants have crazy high gpa's. mine is pretty decent, but geez how can i compete with a 4.0 gpa.

"an advisor once told me that retaking courses is looked upon negatively especially for the sciences."

i've heard that too (for a different nursing program), but a couple of my friends re took their a&p classes and were admitted to utmb no problem.

someone in the audience directly asked "what if we retook any of our prerequisites?" mendoza said, "we will only use the highest grade. so if you retake classes because you made a c or something in micro, and then you get an a, we only use the a to calculate your gpa." brandy interjects: "we use all the grades to calculate your overall gpa, but we don't average the two grades when calculating your prerequisite gpa. we just look at the most recent score." questioner, again, "so retaking classes doesn't hurt our chances?" (brandy was shaking her head no) mendoza: "no, but retaking classes 5 or 6 times doesn't look good."

Oh! I remember something else that maybe good news for some...

If you have a criminal background, you are not automatically DQ'd from the nursing program. They said they've admitted people before with criminal records. It's not a good idea to lie about your criminal background on the application because they WILL find out and if you've lied about it, you may not be allowed to start the program.

Here's a list of everyone that I have stats on so far.......I know, I'm a bit neurotic, OCD, and Type A, lol :)

Add to your stats if I left something out or correct me if I got something wrong !!!

All A's on First attempt sciences but I retook stats, govt and history. I'm going to be honest, my first choice is TWU since I'm taking courses there now but I wouldn't mind going to UTHSC because it's a shorter program. I'm recently seperated with four kids and I need to start working ASAP. I'm scared about the financial aid not being covered for the summer semester at UTHSC and I'm not sure about the how to transfer my financial aid from TWU to UTHSC. But it seems that it's harder to get into TWU. From what I read, the average gpa for TWU seems to be 3.7 or higher. However, I'm not sure.

That probably includes the GPA "bump" that you get if you take a certain number of your prerequisites at TWU. So some TWU applicants could conceivably have a GPA of 4.4 if they made all As at TWU.
