UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

Who all is going to the info session?

oh is that tomorrow? i plan on being there would be great to meet you all!

I can't go to the info session today :( Will someone please ask questions for me?

How many applicants? Of those, how many qualified on all sections of the Hesi?

What do they look at first? Hesi scores? Pre-Req GPA? Science GPA? Overall GPA? Which one is most important?

When will acceptance/denial letters go out?

Please post details when you get back from the info session :) And thanks in advance to whomever asks questions for me !!!

Ok. Just got back from the info session (biked there, it was a nice ride). I left early cause they switched from admissions questions and started on clinical stuff. (Not important to me unless I'm accepted)

Here is what I noted (brought my pen and everything):

-850 applicants to the Spring semester

-in Fall 2011 1600 people applied; the avg Nursing Pre-Req GPA of those accepted was 3.5

-Having a Pre-req GPA of 3.25 or better makes you competitive

-GPA is the most important thing they look at

-Critical Score on Hesi considered competitive between 750-1000 (also the min is 750)

-Retaking classes to get A's will improve your chances of acceptance but (quoting Ms. Mendoza) "Retaking them 5 or 6 times doesn't look good"

-Letters of recommendation and personal statements are not looked at so "please stop sending them"

-Applications no longer roll over to the next semester, so you must re-apply and pay additional application fees

-Letters go out by Nov 15 but they're hoping it will be sooner :yeah:

-College transcripts and HESI scores stay on file for 2 years (if one is not accepted to the semester)

-Someone asked: What can I do to increase my chances of getting in? Reply: Since there are no longer interviews or writing samples to complete, your GPA is going to be the most important thing followed by your Hesi entrance score.

- Having all 60 credits completed does NOT give an advantage in the selection process.

-Courses from accredited universities and colleges are weighted the same (ex. Going to UTA and obtaining credits gives no advantage over going to Lone Star College and obtaining credits)

-Volunteer hours give no advantage

-GPA, GPA, GPA :clown:

-Undergraduate GPA not considered in admission process (only Pre-Req and Science)

OK Those are the most important things I took from the info session. I'm feeling really hopeful. We'll know soon enough!

Rocket, from what I gathered from my UTMB graduate boyfriend (who asked his profs how that school chooses) and the info session today, GPA is the most important. HESI is too, but they made it very clear that GPA is the number 1 thing they look at.

@encephalon7,

Thank you SO much for asking questions and posting the replies!!!! You rock :)

Wow, 850 applicants! It's better than 1600. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck to everyone !!!!

Good luck to you too, Katy! If I get in, I'm definitely gonna party. We should all go out and get drinks!! Haha :p

OH no......my pre-req GPA is much better than my overall GPA!! I returned to school after a 20 yr hiatus (to raise a family etc.). My last 45 hours are wonderful grades, but I still have those classes that I took when I was young and not so focused on what I wanted to be when I grew up that are dragging down my overall GPA.

Problem is, now that I have so many hours, it gets harder and harder to raise my overall GPA :(

did they say what the avg science gpa is?

@ katy im in the same boat, i will be taking some of my sciences over

i am glad 3.25 is competitive

Are you aware of the Texas Academic Fresh Start program? http://www.collegefortexans.com/index.cfm?objectid=6D10C9BD-DD24-153F-90B91DA6C20D1C97 If you elect to apply under this program, a college will disregard any coursework completed more than 10 years ago. You had to notify UTHSC that you were applying under the Fresh Start program before the application deadline though. If you don't get accepted for this semester, reapply as a Fresh Start student for next semester.

I had a bunch of Ds and Fs from my 1st attempt at college 1997-1999. If it were not for the Fresh Start program, I doubt I would have been admitted.
