UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

Yes. I remember some news about the change to Pell Grants and at Galveston College the FA advisers told me I would not be eligible for summer aid. Here's why:

"Because of the recent Congressional vote, students will not be able to receive two Pell Grant awards during any one particular school year, and will thus not be able to receive a Summer Pell Grant if they already received a full award during the previous spring, winter, or fall semesters. It is still possible to get a summer Pell Grant award, as long as the student didn't exhaust their Pell Grant aid during the other semesters throughout the year."

Taken from pellgranteligibility.net

This is exactly one of the reasons I didn't accept financial aid for this semester, Fall 2011. I knew beforehand that UT turns and burns through the summer, with that in mind I wanted to be sure that I was financially covered for Spring 2012 & Summer 2012. I'm not taking that many courses this semester and I was able to bear the financial responsibility, but I knew I may need it at UT so I didn't want to exhaust the pell grant award leaving me with nothing for the summer. Spring 2012 start dates do not stop during summer sessions and looking at how the scheduling goes I'm glad I made that decision. I'd also be covered for the remaining semesters as well because a new school year would begin as the summer is over, thus a whole new FAFSA. HOPEFULLY I made the right decision :dzed:

Chunky, I think you did. I really didn't think about this program until like August 15th. That's when I decided WTH I'll just take the Hesi and go for it, last minute. Perhaps I should've done a little more planning. Then again, I may not even get in. The future is so uncertain

Hi everyone! I am also applying. I had to take the hesi

Twice because I failed the science portion the first time with a 68 buy the second time got a high B. Had anyone else taken the hesi twice? I'm wondering how bad that will hurt my chances.

I had to take the Hesi twice because I did not take the critical thinking portion the first time. My scores from the first HESI were not sent to UTHSC because they were sent to another school. They should not have a record of my first scores because I didn't even send the score report to the school. Did you send both reports to UT? I would not think that it would matter but I'm not 100% sure. I would think that they would only look at your most recent scores but I'm not completely sure.

Mylisa, it doesn't matter. The second score will be the one they judge you on. The only issue is having a bad second score because you cannot redo it a third time, but since you have a high B, you've got nothing to worry about..

Speaking of scores, I just checked UTLink this morning and found my GPAs have changed a bit (maybe they're lookin at me?? :heartbeat )

Prereq: 3.8804

Science: 4.0000

Undergrad: 3.2020

There's another info session at UTHSC on September 21 1:30-3:00. Anyone going?

i think i will

OH! An afternoon one finally? I am definitely going. I've had a morning class on Wednesdays since January practically, so I haven't made it to one yet.

Do we park at the parking garage at the college? If so, will I need to bring cash?

@encephalon7 wow, that's crazy! perhaps :) something to be excited about i think. haha my account still shows they don't have my transcript or tsi requirements, which is impossible because right below it, it shows my school and correct gpas. They couldn't possibly have that without it. :p

Mine changes a tad each time I send in an updated transcript with new classes that I've finished.

You can park at the parking garage but you don't need cash. On the first floor of the building (next to the elevators) you will see a machine into which your parking ticket needs to be inserted. You can pay with cash or a credit card there.

I live just off Montrose so I plan on biking up to the info session. (just bought a '75 Raleigh for a hundred :D) I hope to see some of you up there. Look for me- I've got black hair! :lol2:

You're right, I'm getting ahead of myself. But I'm just so excited and anxious about this whole thing that I'm seeing meaningless patterns in meaningful data. Is it November yet?

How's everyone doing? We just finished our first Pharm test so I finally have time to breathe! :)

It looks like all your recent questions have been answered, but let me know if you have any others.

Re- parking at the SON for the info sessions- There are 2 public garages convenient to the SON:

#1 Mays Clinic- Southwest corner of Holcombe/Bertner intersection. Entrance is off Bertner, right past the SON but on the other side of the street.

#2 The big garage on the North side of Holcombe that actually crosses over Bertner.

#1 is a better choice simply because you don't have to cross Holcombe, one of the busiest streets in the Med Center. Anyone ever played the old video game Frogger? It's a lot like that.

There's also a surface lot at the SON. The entrance is off of Pressler. It's not a big rectangle parking lot, just a few "streets" with parking spaces. You'll know you're at the right place because you'll have to pull a ticket to open the gate.

It will cost the same to park in the Mays garage or at the SON surface lot. The only time the Mays clinic is cheaper is if you park more than 7 hours- the Mays clinic is only $10 while everywhere else in the Med Center is $12. So after you get accepted, park in the Mays Clinic for Orientation and Bootcamp. :)

Also- there are no admissions quotas. The only time race/gender would even come into play is if they're deciding between 2 otherwise identical candidates- same GPA, same HESI, etc. Legally, they are allowed to use race/gender to make that decision, but they are not *required* to.

About 10% of my class is male. The racial mixture seems pretty diverse to me. There's not an obvious majority of any one race.
