UT Houston Fall 2010 (University of Texas at Houston)

Anyone here applied already?

Have you taken the NET exam?

Is UT Houston a bring your laptop to lecture kind of school? When I went to UT Austin pretty much everyone had laptops in class. Professors made lectures available online so students could follow along and write notes using their computers. Then when I went to ACC and the lectures were still available online, but everyone just printed them out and wrote notes on the printed papers.

I have an older netbook, so its uses are pretty much limited to internet and word documents (I also have a great desktop PC at home.) I'm considering getting a newer netbook with greater functionality, just because I love the tiny things, but do you think I should invest in a full laptop for nursing school? Will you be bringing your laptops to class? I know Texas A&M requires laptops with certain programs preloaded. Does anyone know if the profs at UT-H want us to have certain programs? Thanks! :)

In general, everyone has their laptop in class both for writing note and to browse the web when they start to fall asleep :D. There are a good bunch of us that have macs, but mostly it's windows. There are a lot of students who buy a netbook, which has worked out well for them and then there are students who just print out all the slides (I would estimate maybe 2000 slides for the entire semester... but that is a very rough estimate) and hand write the notes. It just depends on what is best for your learning style. They have not given us any programs to install on our computers. Some people bought an ipod touch to listen to the lectures (all of the lectures are recorded except patho (the prof doesn't like recording) or if the prof doesn't feel like it (aka not enough people showed up to lecture).

so macbooks are ok then? because everything on the computer requirements say that macs aren't supported....and thats what i have.

Or we can do like a happy hour to celebrate!!!

I am all about this!! I got my email acceptance to the pace setters program yesterday!!! If you guys want to meet up - maybe happy hour the night before orientation or something? We can make some buddies and hopefully be that much stronger during the school year!

Yay, congrats everyone!!

Yes, macs are fine to use. I'm using a mac currently, and I've had no problems.

Wow, that's a lot of slides! I had to print out a bunch of slides (but nowhere near 2000!) for anatomy and physiology classes and I hated wasting all of that paper, but I do best in class by writing on the slides. I remember things easier when I hand write them. Maybe I'll look into convertible tablet pcs... or maybe I'm just using this as an excuse to feed my tech addiction! :p

I agree, and I really want to get to know all of you! I'll be moving to Houston, so I'd really like to make some new friends. :) The night before orientation sounds good to me! Anyone know a good place in the Med Center or nearby? Since we'll all be going to school there, we all know we can get there the night before, yes?

Sounds great!!

I agree! That'd be a great idea, especially the night before :) I think a couple of us have also brought this up through the Facebook group so I'm hoping people will respond there too! I know of some places in Rice Village that are nearby that might be ok. If anyone else is interested I'd love to help set one up!

Specializes in None.

Has anyone started on their requirements?

The AHA offers BLS online.

Given your screen name, I'm pretty sure I know who you are on facebook. I added you as an admin for the group, if you want to set up the event since you know some good places!

there are new apartments and houses (a new build community)

in pearland where i live at

the city is like 15-20 mins away from the school

LOL yeah :) That's cool! I'll set something up through the Facebook group and see if anyone is interested and I'll post it here too. I asked the FB group but is anyone interested in getting together to do the COR requirements as a group? I remember reading someone else's post that a few people in her class did it as a group and they had a great time so I think this would be another good idea to get together if anyone is interested

Also, for people looking for places to live, you might wanna check the surrouding areas in the medical center that are close to the Metro Rail. Some apartments are walking distance from the LightRail and you can always ride that into the medical center and just walk to the buildings. There's also apartments and a few townhomes off Holly Hall which is a street or two after El Paseo where UT Housing is and that's also really closeby. I have a few friends who live there and they just walk to the bus stop.

Hope that helps!

I looked into those apartments off of Holly Hall, but I read online reviews that said there were a bunch of car break-ins. I would love to hear what your friends think about them, though, since online reviews are often really biased.
