Questions about Seton Versant RN Residency in Austin
Hi all! Hope everyone has been having a great summer and has been staying out of this heat! captain byakuya- I've heard back from the nurse manager of the Seton Select program. The interview is scheduled for tomorrow. The manager actually called me in early august wanting to set up an interview for the 10th, but I was scheduled to be out of town doing some volunteer work that week so I couldn't make it. So I know that they have been doing interviews since at least the 10th... but I have no clue as to when they will stop/decide anything. Hopefully I'll have more information tomorrow... I'll let you all know

Some people brought their laptops to orientation just to make sure they could log onto the school's internet. I brought that and a folder to put papers and stuff in. I want to say that lunch will be provided, but don't quote me on that... my memory may be failing me.

You will probably start clinicals late February/early March.

I agree, the days are VERY long! It eases off though your 3rd and 4th semester when you only have to be at school for one day for 2 classes (9 to 12 and then 1 to 4)

Sholman713, I looked on the course schedule and they haven't listed times on some of these courses, but from what I remember from my first semester, this is what I can make out. Health assessment: this course has been online the past couple semesters, but it says that class is from 7 to 9. Maybe this is labs and not class. If so, that 7am lab would be a killer. Maybe they made a mistake :/ Labs for 1st semester students this year didn't start until after 8, so I dunno what's going on with that. You will probably have pharm Thursday morning from 9 to 12 and then patho in the afternoon from 1 to 4. This is what the schedule was for my class this past spring and for the 1st semester students this year. Care will be either on Tuesday or Wednesday. Most likely it will be Tuesday from 8 until 12 (sometimes during the first month or so, they'll keep you until 3 or 4pm to make up for clinical time that you do not have). They will be scheduling labs during your free Wednesday and Friday for the first month to month and a half before you start clinicals, so do not plan anything during those days.

The UT Houston Bookstore website (http://webmedbooks.com/uthnursing/coursebooks/courseSearch.aspx) will let you search for textbooks by course number. However, they don't seem to have the lists. If you post your email address or PM me your email address I'd be happy to send you the list made for my first semester. All of the books will more than likely be the same except that the Mosby's drug guide and the Ackley care plan book will be the newer edition.

Yes, you'll definitely be able to register even though you have to wait until then. You will never have to worry about them running out of spots for you! :) Some of my friends couldn't get their transcripts in until after christmas and they still had plently of time! My class (spring 2010) was not offered this work study program because UT isn't used to people starting in the spring and therefore didn't think about coordinating with the hospitals for the work study program. None of my class is in the work study program currently. Hopefully they've changed it for you guys. Make sure to ask them at orientation about this!

I think that is the hold on your account that will be there until transcripts indicating that ALL required courses have been completed. I think that's it... if my memory serves me correct. Technically, you really don't have to get the titers. If you want to be absolutely certain, then for sure get them, but UT health will not require you to get the results of a titer (even though they say that they do). They MIGHT have changed the policy, but I'm pretty sure they didn't

No problem :) I really don't want to do schoolwork anyhow! haha! They will give you a complete list of everything you will need for Care I and clinicals in your admissions packet. Yes, I really like my stethoscope and I would recommend it :) It doesn't really matter where you buy your pen light and scissors. Just that they work you'll be fine.

Parking is not pretty... You will be on campus three times a week at least (usually for the first month or so) 1. If you park in the garages, then it's best to park across the street at MDA ($10 if you're there over 5 hours) OR park in the open lot right beside the school ($11 for 5 hrs+) OR park at the UT Towers that is right across the street from the TMC Transit center stop (You get a student discount if you bring your student ID. They'll take 2 hours off your actual stay and charge you for that instead unless you stay over 8 hours (then they'll just charge you the full amount which, I think, is $8) 2. If you take the rail from the Fannin south station, it's $3 a day to park and about a $1 total to ride both ways if you get a student card from the station downtown. 3. There are some who take the bus in from a park and ride (I want to say this is like $4 or $5 dollars total), 4. There are some who park in the brown lots (can be charged from $1 to $6 max) and take the med center shuttle for free. 5. Some park on el paseo for free and get a ride from the UT shuttle also for free (there are limited spaces so i wouldn't suggest parking there on a day where you really need to get to school on time) 6. There is contract parking available (the one I know about is the parking lot right beside the UT towers). I want to say it's like $60 or $70 a semester or something like that. and... there are probably other ways, but those are the main ones i know of. Hopefully that helps

For your first and second semester you'll probably wear scrubs about once a week. I only bought two pairs of scrubs and I was just fine my first semester. The second semester you will take psych... most sites require you to wear business casual, but there were at least one or two sites that wanted students to wear scrubs. Again, I was just fine with two pairs since my site required me to wear business casual. Some people bought an additional pair for 3rd semester since you will most likely have clinicals twice a week, but I did not (I promise you I wore clean scrubs each time I went to the hospital). Not sure what I will do for my 4th, but I'm going to see if I can hold off on buying another pair since I will be graduating in May The tubing does not need to be a specific color. It was kind of funny but a lot of people in my class who bought a litmann classic II stethoscope got the raspberry color. We all though it would be a unique color to have but apparently great minds think alike. I'd say to buy the stethoscope package at the bookstore (you will be surprised to find out that the UT bookstore is actually very reasonable in pricing of books/supplies/etc), littmann lightweight, or littmann classic II (this is what i have). Some people bought a cardiology III, but it's much more expensive. Just make sure the stethoscope you get has both a diaphragm and a bell (some of them don't have bells). You can always buy a stethoscope name tag or a sleeve if you want to set yours apart from someone else's.
