Hi guys,

Its sue, I have been on for quite sometime, i have a lil dilemma i am down...very down..to the point of tears....i had enrolled with EC last year before the deadline...i am currently attending Helene fuld college of nursing..im taking their math/chem course you have to take BEFORE you take any nursing course...its only a year..its a school just for LPNs, here is the thing though..they have a REALLY retarded english exam that determines whether or not they would give you credit for the english classes you have ALREADY taken...you have to score a 2 or a 3 to get accepted into the program...if you score a 2 your accepted WITHOUT english credit...you must REPEAT these english classes...if you score a 3 you get your english credits transfered....you get to take the exam twice...well i did...i even had a tutoring session with one of the english instructors there...and took the exam 2nd time around and they still gave me a 2..EXTREME FRUSTRATION...now i know EC had some changes....im am discouraged to go to Helene yet im afraid of doing EC b/c my first exam NC 1 I got a D...i passed my boards two years ago with the min of 85 quest..held a 3.58 GPA in the LPN program..prepared well and ended up with a D..i couldnt beleive...and now im wondering if i should re-consider EC...anyone un-enrolled after Oct last year and RE-enrolled?...if so how are you doing now...i really need some advice and encouragement..i feel as though i have worked so hard to place myself in a good position and made so many sacrifices to become an RN as soon as i can...and i end up with a brick wall.......thanks guys...XoXo

Oh Sue, I feel for you. HUGS HUGS HUGS.

You were there for me big time when I started LPN school and I will NEVER forget you. I'm sorry to see this happening to you. Helene Fuld is the ideal school for LPNs here in NYC, but their entrance policy really is a piece of work. I urge you to try EC again. I'm in between EC, College of New Rochelle, and a school in Houston. I have a BA and want a BSN.

I'm praying God leads me to the right direction. As you told me last year, "God did not bring you this far to leave you."

So you still get in with a 2, right? You just have to take English through the school? I'd stick with Helene if you can -- you'd never have to worry about another state denying your RN license.

I'm so sorry, sweetie. *hugs* But can I say it's great to "see" you here? ;)

SO you have to take English?

So take English.

Sue,

There are many different types of learners, but for this discussion I will just talk about two of those groups. The first group, and this is probably the biggest group, really does better with more visual and hands on material. This group, to which I belong, does much better with the material presented to them by an instructor, and then they can demonstrate that material right back. The second group seems to somehow have the ability to visualize the concepts without any demonstration at all. Learners in this group tend to do well just by reading the text. Then come test time they can sort of regurgitate that material right back with no problem.

Now the reality is that most people are a blend of those two groups.

Traditional brick/mortar schools present their material primarily the first way and EC most definitely the second way.

It sounds like you are a learner who leans more towards the first group. You probably do better with an actual "live" instructor. Perhaps having classmates around you helped you get that impressive grade you earned in LPN school. If you did poorly on NC1 then I suggest you stay in the traditional program. It is not that I don't think you have mastery over the material in NC 1, but the format is a daunting one, and perhaps not a good fit for you. The nice thing about the traditional route is that you get homework, assignments, and multiple test. That gives you a chance to pull your grade up if you have a bad day. Have they given you any more options as far as retaking English? I think you have what it takes to be a nurse, and a very good one at that, but if being an RN is your goal, then I recommend jumping through the hoops and continue the brick/mortar route. EC is stressful and the test just get harder and harder.

SO you have to take English?

So take English.

:)

Sue, you would have to take 2 English classes, right? The way this program is set up is extremely intense and is best to have a lightened classload BEFORE starting the nursing classes. The 4 semesters/quarters are 9 weeks in one year.

I feel for you. Some times, just the smallest things seem like the largest hurdles. I spent 3 years jumping through hoops at my local community college just to try to get into their nursing program. However, they kept changing gpa requirements adding more curriculum, it was so frustrating, I entered a tech college who was reputed to have no pre-requs for their LPN program, and an above excellent reputation. They had optional pre reqs that would get you at the top of the list but I opted to not do them and just hound the admissions counselor for weeks. It worked for me, but I always 2nd guessed myself.

Long story short I got in, but I can relate to your frustration. I truly wish the National Nurses Association, would just come up with a standard set of pre-requs so us students can dispense with the migraines, High Blood Pressure, ulcers. I wish you the best no matter what choice you make, but english seems like a small price to pay for a bigger pay check.

i am sorry for your situation. i know the shear frustration a person feels when it is just time to be a rn...i am currently there. i say get back on the ec horse and let us here guide you through the test.....:wink2:

thanks guys...With EC going through all of these Evals, I have to be honest..it kinda scares me...I agree with all of you, however what ivanh3 wrote, i Totally agree...im more of a brick and marter type...i need further instruction when it comes to certain things...like "visual, and Hands on"...even though i kept a very good grade in the LPN program two years ago, i thought last year id give myself a good chance to see how i can handle independent study...i felt extrememly confident which was the funny part...when i saw that D for NC1 the proctor said to me " Oh, someone passed!"...LOL!!...b/c my mouth was wiiiiiiide open and had the wierdest smirk on my face!!!...LOL!!...and when he saw my grade he goes " Oh, I see now, but dont fret b/c NC 1 is usually the one many dont pass for whatever reason give it another shot."....I never did...i wish i had though...who knows maybe i would've passed NC 1 the second time around ... akanini just reminded me as i told her a year ago.."God did not bring you this far to leave you"...you are absolutely right...when you are down you tend to forget the encouraging words you give others when they are in doubt..thank you so much...so ima go ahead and re-take those two english courses the school unfairly is forcing me to take ( although i ALREADY TOOK BOTH 7 years ago in West Palm Beach!, this is the frustrating part)...i'll keep pushing through..thanks so much for your support...i knew i can come on here and get hugs!!.. :)...thank you guys...you know whats funny out of all the forums even though im not with EC anymore this is the one that i feel the most *love* and get the most support from!!...take care guys....

Love,

Sue

Well since you know what type of learner you are, you better stick with Helene Fuld. EC being pushed out of different states is scaring me too. I wanted to do travel nursing at one point. I have family in CA. When I pass my Nclex, I will make my decision. We are a little family on this board!

Best of luck girlfriend!! I respect your decision.

It sounds like you might do better with the more traditional school. However, if you choose to go with EC we are all here to support and guide you. Good luck with your decision.:heartbeat
