Hi everyone! I'm so excited to be joining allnurses. Yay! :)
Anyway, I am a new grad and recently passed my nclex. i've been looking for jobs and I was offered to work in an LTC. But then, they told me that my orientation will not be paid. I was wondering if this is normal or even legal?
Thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.
No. It's not legal. Can I hold a 1 day unpaid training for new hires? | Human Resource Blog
After you find a job notify the Department of Labor
Woah, that is scary that they would even ask you to undergo orientation unpaid. Maybe, if you wanted to visualize or shadow your preceptor and NOT TOUCH any patient physically or even contribute to care...I would agree. But as far as actually handling the patient's medications or touching a patient or communicating orders for staff there. I would definitely NOT agree to be unpaid. You have a license to protect. Do not jeopardize it.
I could understand doing a job shadow, I've done a couple of those during the interview process. But NEVER during orientation! I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's not legal and an employer has to pay you for all your time worked.. When I started back with my facility after being gone for a year and went through all the general orientation stuff the HR director let me take an orientation binder home to read to read through rather then gave me sit there and read it all, and they paid me for two hours even though I wasn't in the building.

What if you hurt your back? You wouldn't be covered. I do not believe this is legal and i wouldn't touch a patient if I was not a paid employee.
