Hi everyone! I'm so excited to be joining allnurses. Yay! :)

Anyway, I am a new grad and recently passed my nclex. i've been looking for jobs and I was offered to work in an LTC. But then, they told me that my orientation will not be paid. I was wondering if this is normal or even legal?

Thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

Legal? I don't know, can't speak to that.

Normal? Definitely not.

Thank you for your time to reply :) I was actually thinking it wasn't fair so I'm probably going to turn down the job offer

so basically they are asking you to provide several days of free labour while they make up their mind whether to hire you?

Specializes in Postpartum, Med Surg, Home Health.

Legal I am not sure about, perhaps it is if they write it in certain terms..normal? Definitely not! Do not agree to this, it's a preview to terrible management of this company.

Facilities pay for all orientation normally, also any classes or certifications they require you to take you will be reimbursed for. So I am shocked they said won't even pay for orientation! Turn away and never look back :)

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Let me preface this message by mentioning that I have worked at multiple LTC facilities. Not once have I been asked to undergo an orientation without pay.

Specializes in Postpartum/Lactation/Nursing Education.

You do not want to work for that company. Any company that would expect you to orient for free will use and abuse you. Run, don't walk, from that job offer. Good luck :)

I would not volunteer my time for such an organization.

I'd be concerned about legalities, would you even be an employee? What if something adverse event happened?

Specializes in Pain, critical care, administration, med.

Work is work. If they want you to work for free I would run!

Specializes in Pediatric.

No. I wouldn't.

Thank you everyone for your responses. :)

Thank you everyone for your responses. :) I have been thinking about what you all said. It's nice to be given advices by fellow nurses who understands my situation. The problem with me maybe is I don't know how to say "no." I am sometimes a pushover and being a nurse I know I should change that. Now my problem would be how do I turn down their job offer without sounding ungrateful or unprofessional?
