University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

I mailed mine on November and it's showing that mine was all received. They are receiving huge volume of applications so it will take time to update your account on line. As long as your transcripts are postdated before Feb01, I don't think it's an issue.

I sent one of mine off end of October, but they still hadn't received it end of January. When I phoned they said even at the busiest time the most it should take is a few weeks. So I had to have it resent.

Ohh that's weird. I'm from Manitoba and I think it only took 3 weeks to update my file

does anyone know how many applicants there were last year? :D

From what I've read, around 500-700?

How many students are they taking? It's not stated on the website

"From about 500+ eligible applicants, (under review) the top 200 are invited for an interview and then the top 120 applicants are offered a seat in the School of Nursing." From the info ppt.

Hi guys! It's already mid Feb. and I'm already so very nervous. My friend emailed the admissions and this year around 500 applied , which I'm guessing is not over 500. So there really seems to be less people applying this year (hence the low # of posts here? Just a guess :) ).

I'm just nervous probably like everyone else. I wish it was March already. They said they're handing out the interviews starting on 21st.

So meanwhile, do you guys want to share a bit about yourselves? :) you know, just to go through this together. I'm from Vancouver and currently at UBC in my third year science. I have bits of volunteerimg - school clubs, hospital, teaching clarinet...although I'm not sure I put them down the way they wanted. They were in paragraphs, and I tried to write skills and what I've learned from those experiences. My grades are very average-I mean they're exactly the average. For my personal statement, I wrote about how I decided to become a nurse...how I met a nurse. a very typical story haha...Well that's about it. Just wishing my stats are good enough for an interview :D

Anyone else? :)

And also, since it's a good idea to get a good hold of what thr interview would be like (since the interviews are during the finals), I was curious about the panel interviews they're having on skype. Are they like mmi in any way? Does anyone know what a panel interview would look like?

Hey all you future nurses!! I have been waiting to find this blog and i'm so happy some of you have found it as well. I'm currently in the 2015 cohort and I would love to be able to help with any questions you may have about the application on the program itself.

Unfortunately with this new panel interview i'm not sure if it will be formatted similarly so I doubt i'll be of much help to you in that aspect but feel free to ask anything else you can think of.

Good Luck!

Hello OCsmash!

Thanks so much for the offer of help! I read online that the average for grades from 2015 was 80%. I only have about a 75% average :(. Do you know if many people below 80% got in from last year? Thanks again!

Hi OCmash! Can you tell us an example of a good supplemental? What do you think are aspects of the supplemental that gets a score of 1 or 2?

It's really tough to say @Hamster84! I believe someone above mentioned that the average age in the program was 27 and 90% of the people in my cohort have bachelor's degrees so it has been a while since a lot of people were in full-time studies. I know some people said their averages weren't the greatest without disclosing exactly what they were but I think it just depends on your situation and background. I really do think UBC values the different walks of life that we all come from. It's about your passion, your drive, and your life experience. What you specifically will bring to the field of nursing rather than how book smart you are.

Sorry that probably wasn't much help. My fingers are crossed for you!!
