University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

@baldeagle that's also a tough question!! I don't know how the supplemental scores work as they don't tell you how you scored if you get accepted to the program (at least I never inquired). I can tell you that I personally mentioned how certain life events and experiences influenced me, made me a better person and how that would help me in the field of nursing. I have an immune system disorder that affects my hair and I mentioned the importance of a support system and how community and those around you can be like family and aid in the healing process. I also mentioned how my volunteer experiences had convinced me that nursing was where I needed to be and why. It is personal but it's more about how you have been affected rather than a timeline of all the things you have done.

Hey @Ocsmash! Thanks for answering our questions! Thank you for sharing your personal story as well.

Can I ask what your background education was before nursing? Is nursing school hard academically?

And @Hamster84, if the admission avg is around 80, I am sure there are many who were above and under as well! 75 sounds reasonable...maybe your supplemental will determine everything :D. I'm kind of in that situation too. Good luck to everyone! I hate waiting :(

According to the admissions PowerPoint presentation, last year people were admitted with averages of 70-90%. It said that grades are weighted at 60% and supplemental at 40% for selections for interviews. That's great, because it means that your experiences really count for something. I think that this program specifically accepts people with a variety of different life experiences, and it would be amazing to be a part of that group. Cannot wait to hear about interviews and ultimately, offers of admission.

Thanks for the update futurenursling, baldeagle and Ocsmash:) That has helped calm my nerves. Here's hoping my 75% and my supplemental are strong enough to get me an interview!

@baldeagle I actually have a degree in business administration. I also went back and did all my previous requisites to get into med school but ultimately decided that nursing was where I belong.

When it comes to the program itself I wouldn't necessarily say that it's hard academically. The first term is by far more difficult than this second term has been but mainly because it's just A LOT of information and things are taught differently than what I was used to. Most of our averages were above 80 for first term and you'll find that everyone is there to help you. School is no longer a competition. People in our program post notes to share with others and it makes things a lot easier when you're working together.

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum...well, new to posting on the forum. This is my second time around applying to the UBC Nursing program and I definitely want to do things right this time. I wish I had been around sooner to give tips on the supplemental application (that's where I was definitely lacking on my first attempt), but after reading the posts, you guys definitely already have some great advise. With the supplemental applications in, and many of us waiting for the invitation for the new on-line interview, Im guessing Im not alone in being nervous and continuously (obsessively) checking my UBC and email account. I'm nervous about the change from the MMI, and wondering what the format of this new interview will be. I wonder how many people applied to UBC this year...I know last year saw a HUGE number of applicants, and am definitely hopeful that this year is different. As for me, I have a B.Sc. in Biology from a long time ago...not a tremendous amount of volunteer experience, but tonnes of life experience...for me, the supplemental application was quite tough, because I am probably older than the average applicant...meaning my most exciting experiences were more than ten years ago.

I finally decided to post to show my appreciation for all of the great questions and contributions, that and to thank you guys for helping me see Im not alone in this.

From what I understand, well be given more on the format of the new interview when and if we receive an email from Ruxandra...If I get that email, Ill be sure to let you know what it says...maybe some of you can do the same.

Itll be pretty exciting as we see people posting that they have received their interview letters...maybe we can arrange practice interviews then?

Hi @NERVOUS IN VAN . Great to see another post! Now is the time where we can all be hopeful together and help out each other in going through this process. Seems like you already know a lot :) Ruxandra replied to my friend's email and said there were "close to 500 applicants" this year.

I am also very anxious and constantly checking my emails for updates. And this forum is one of them :D Getting an interview would be extreme. Let's stay hopeful and wait for those invites! We can definitely arrange some practice sessions afterwards

Hi Baldeagle, nice to hear from you...500 applicants sounds doable...that's a more than one in five chance!!! I feel like Charlie from Willy Wonka, hoping for that golden ticket.

Hey! This may have already been asked, but I was wondering when we should start hearing about interviews? and if we don't happen to get an interview do you know if we are going to hear otherwise?

As far as I know, the interviews will be around April 13 to April 21...no specific dates on when those who receive invitations will be getting them (the waiting is terrible). The invitations will be sent via email from Ruxandra (check your junk mail folders regularly, but not as regularly as I have been). Its too bad the UBC BSN admissions blog has so little info :(, but according to sources, they are very occupied with revamping the admissions requirements for 2017... this could be good or bad for people like us, depending on whether or not the revamp opens the doors further for international students...but it depends on if more money from international students means more seats available for domestic; however, the main bottleneck to more seats is usually preceptors, and thats not a question of money, but having more nurses willing to teach. I have a feeling that for domestic students, getting in this year is a good idea. For international students, next year may be easier.

Hey soccer girl, just checked and baldeagle said they will be handing out interviews around March 21st...its funny, but even with that info I am probably still going to be checking my accounts obsessively.

Same here. Obsessed with my emails like I've never done before...when I went to the nursing info sessioj two years ago, they told us that they keep their stduents at 120 only because they dont have enough facility and equipment to budget more than 120 students at once :( well, let's keep updating each other to wait another two weeks.
