UMB FALL 2011

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

I will be applying for the Fall 2011 program at UMB really really soon. I was wondering if anyone else was doing the same...? I'm really nervous about applying because Anatomy really kicked my butt last semester and I ended up getting a C (even though I ended up doing really well on my other science courses). Now, I'm losing hope. Anyone feeling the same?

Hope you all are having a great holiday weekend and that you will have some time available to reflect on the reason for the time off.

I posted this as a stand alone in the MD forum, but wanted to be sure you all (hopefully my future classmates) got the information.

The Maryland Higher Education Comission has a merit based scholarship for MD community college students that transfer to a MD 4 year school, and since the bar is set pretty high to get into UMB I am sure a few of us have GPA's that are competitive enough to get some extra cash for school and related expenses. The min GPA to apply is 3.0, but awards are given to those with the highest GPA's first and in 2008 the cutoff was 3.93.

The applications are currently available here, and are due the first of March. Its a simple process and only requires an offical transcript be sent out now and another sent out when you complete your 60 hours or an AA/AS degree.

Best of luck, two more weeks until the wait begins.

This is my first time writing on the forum, but I've been reading various threads about UMD for awhile now. I'm applying to the Shady Grove campus to avoid the costly commute. I was just wondering how you guys thought the TEAS went, if you already took it? I'm set to take version V this week and am kind of stressed out about it. I took time off after I got my first BA and am worried I've forgotten a lot of the material that's covered on the test. I'm also terrible at taking standardized tests. :/ At the info session, they told us most students who are accepted get scores in the mid-80s to 90s. Seems like a very competitive score on a standardized test.

How did you guys do? Did you take version IV or V? Do you know how important this grade is to our application? Good luck to everyone applying!

If your TEAS score is in line with your GPA and close to the national average, you should not be worried unless both are on the low side. Higher than the national average is a plus. Lower is a red flag that your GPA may not reflect your true academic abilities. The TEAS is only one thing the admissions committees look at - everything in your application will be scrutinized to get an overall picture of your ability to succeed. UMB receives many applications and has the luxury of picking the best of the best. The average TEAS scores of the applicants accepted should not be a benchmark against which you weigh your chances - the process is way more complicated and comprehensive than that. It is a whole new ball game every entry semester because the applicant pool is unique compared to any other before it. The waiting period is agonizing, so it is only natural for prospective students to look for positive or even negative signs indicating their chances of acceptance. Don't do that - as tempting as it is, it is a waste of emotional energy. Spend your time instead on preparing yourself to start nursing school. Check out some of the blogs on this site and others for ideas. Best of luck.

My application status changed to Complete Ready for Review.. I'm so nervous! I reallllly hope I get in.. now I just have to wait 2 months; hopefully it won't be any longer than that because I don't think I could stand it. Fingers crossed!

OK - first hurdle passed. They have all your stuff. The next status will be Committee Ready but that will not likely be any time soon. Best of luck!

As some that has be there - the time actually flew by pretty quickly actually!

Keep yourself busy and focused on other things.

Spring is coming and with it - much to enjoy!

Start looking for projects that you want to finish before starting school.

And most of all - do not allow others on the boards/classes/life to freak you out and feel bad about your own application - as GrayLady said - each application pool is different and you have submitted the best application that you could.

*hugs*

Nice.

I just took the rest of my application into Admissions in Baltimore. I was killing my paper with revisions, so much so that my final paper had no soul. Luckily I had an early rev saved, made structure upgrades to it and rushed up to Baltimore so I would stop stressing over 600 words. Now to get ready for the spring semester. Hopefully school will help the next few months scream by.

How well did you guys do on the TEAS test? I got 80 so I was wondering if that is ok

Hi All! I just found this thread and am also applying to UMB for fall 2011. I just took the TEAS today (version V)...I didn't think it was anything like the study guide but I did manage to get an 85%. Never been so happy to get basically a "B". I did see that someone had posted in this thread earlier that as long as your scores are above the national averages that was good, but my score report says the averages are 63.3 and 68.9% (national and program averages). Those seem a bit low considering that most schools require at least a 74% on the TEAS. Does anyone know what UMB's minimum is?...I didn't see it posted on their website. I am still waiting on one of my teachers to get my letter of rec done and my other letter of rec writer is reviewing my resume for me to polish it up (I have been in the military for the past 12 years so I have never had to write one). Anyhoo, good luck to everyone; hopefully we all get in! :)

AbbeyT and Kynchanted, congrats are great Teas scores! I will be taking the Teas soon and I wanted to know how did you study? Which study guides did you use?

Hi misstekaboo! :)

Thanks on the congrats; I don't want to scare you but I thought the test was hard! :(

I used the TEAS Study Guide for version 5 that is made by ATI Testing. I also bought versions A and B of the onlline practice assessments (you can only take each one twice so use them wisely). The book did prepare me for what types of questions would be on the test, but don't bother memorizing the questions because the q's in the study guide are not the ones on the test. To me, the test seemed like it called for a lot of deductive reasoning and trying to figure out what the right answer was a lot of the time. There was some stuff that I don't ever remember being in the study guide, and I read the guide at least three times. The science really hung me up, so study that well (unless science is your thing). Language usage and math were my best scores on the test; science and reading comp. weren't as high. When you study, I would pay attention to the smaller details of the readings because that is what (in my opinion) the TEAS questions focused on more in the science area. Unless you are naturally good at standardized tests (I am okay), I would read the study guide a few times over, do all of the practice questions in the readings as well as the practice tests in the book, and maybe buy the online tests too so you can get a feel for how the test will be administered. Make sure that when you answer the questions in the study guide, you actually understand why the answers are what they are and are simply not memorizing them because that won't help (unless of course it is something about what ATP is or what the hypothalamus does). Hope that helps a little. If you study, you should do fine. I wish you the best of luck! :)

Kynchanted, thanks so much for your advice! I am nervous about the Teas. I have been brushing up on my math, and really going over the science portions. I just finished taking microbiology, and A/P II last semester, so that info. Is more fresh in my mind. I have not taken chemistry yet, but I begin that class in a few days. The program that I am applying to does not require chemistry as a prereq., but I know that I will have to eventually take it. unfortunately, if there is a lot of chem, on the Teas, I will only will be able to study "procedure" from the study guide (atomic number and so forth). Well, thanks again for the Teas insight! I hope that you get into the program of your choosing!
