UMB FALL 2011

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

I will be applying for the Fall 2011 program at UMB really really soon. I was wondering if anyone else was doing the same...? I'm really nervous about applying because Anatomy really kicked my butt last semester and I ended up getting a C (even though I ended up doing really well on my other science courses). Now, I'm losing hope. Anyone feeling the same?

Mine too Abby! :) Good luck to everyone! Hopefully we won't be waiting too long (that is the worst part!).... :uhoh3:

I just hope the weather stays good in the Baltimore area so the admissions comittee can make it into review apps. Last year a whole week was lost in schools across the state in Snowmageddon, and I am sure that a delay like that can "snowball."

By march we should be able to hear something...........

March isn't too bad. Last year I applied to San Fran State U and the deadline was 11/30, but you didn't find out until almost May for fall admission. That was a long wait! And then that volcano that grounded all of those flights hit and grounded a few of my nursing applications too. It just wasn't my year...hopefully this year is better for us all! :)

So I crunched the numbers (cause thats what I do) to see when we would hear back. If we go off the average for the last 4 admissions cycles for the traditional BSN the date of the first round of announcements will be the 28th of March.

But the news gets better. Fall admissions are completed nearly twice as fast as spring (no clue as to why that is, there are more applicants for the Fall, but I am not complaining). This being the case the first round is likely to find out March 8thish.

Of course every cohart is different, there could be more applicants or less (but the poor weather doesnt seem to slow down the admissions process(last year the fall apps we done 5 working days sooner than the year before), which just goes to show you how dedicated the staff at UMB is (or they just got snowed in and had nothing else to do:rolleyes:)).

Ok I am going to stop obsessing over this and start getting my house ready for a Superbowl party.

Wow that would be great. What do you mean by first round though? Is there a reason some people would hear back before others?

I seriously hope we hear back sooner than later, but I think march is kind of pushing it. I think hearing back middle of may is more realistic. But who knows! Either way the wait is agonizing.

Hi ksm84,

I think what is meant by first round is everyone who was admitted maybe? I know that at other schools the first round was everyone who was accepted. Then another round occurred where those who were accepted but declined their seats' slots were offered to alternates (or people from the standby list). Of course that is after a few weeks goes by for those who were offered admission initially to decide if they were going to accept it. That was my experience last year. I was waitlisted at both schools that I applied to so I sat on pins and needles for a few weeks then I was oficially denied admission when I didn't get in off of the waitlist. Granted that was in CA and FL that that occurred, so I am not sure if MD works the same way, but that is my take on it.

^you nailed it. Except UMB doesn't tell people they are waitlisted. 1st round gets 14 days to accept or decline. If they decline then some of those that are still pending are offered a seat and so on (this is what I am inferring from the other UMB applicant posts). So it could be until May for the entire class to be set, but I truly think the first acceptances will go out in the front half of March.

Good luck everyone! and i agree with kynchanted and Student4_life's comments about how admission works at UMB. I know that it is not fun waiting, but the time does go by fairly fast - breathe deeply and try to enjoy the coming spring!

I attend UMB and the rule is:

You must earn a B or better in all prereq courses and have a 3.0 gpa.

HOWEVER, we had some students who were accepted and they got a C in AP 2 during their last semester and they showed up for orientation and some were denied and some were granted admission.... It depended where the C came from: a Towson girl was admitted and a CCBC student was denied.

I'm sorry, but you need to retake that class, before you waste your money applying.

Showing up with a C knowledge level in a course would be extremely dangerous... especially for patho and adult health... at least for the Baltimore campus

Shady Grove campus too. The program is the same as Baltimore's - we give the same tests.

you must earn a b or better in all prereq courses (wrong) and have a 3.0 gpa (right).

you just have to get b's or better for any courses in progress, c's are ok for courses completed upon application(not something to count on but not the end of the world and definately not something to crush someone over). the open houses have been very clear on this.

from the website:

"to be considered for admission to the bsn program you must also have:...

  • an overall gpa of 3.0
  • a science gpa of 3.0 (chemistry, anatomy and physiology i and ii, microbiology)"

"provide an official transcript for any coursework in which you are currently enrolled. our offer of admission will be withdrawn if you fail to submit an official transcript by the deadline noted below. please note that students admitted to the traditional bsn program must earn a minimum grade of "b" in any additional coursework completed prior to enrolling at the school of nursing and must present a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 ("b") otherwise admission will be withdrawn."

so to be clear you can have c's and apply, but your gpa must be greater than 3.0 and any courses that you have not completed yet you must get a's or b's in.
