OK, so the rules have changed, and CPD is no longer enough.
I'm wondering about how to achieve the "reflective discussion" part when there are no UK registered nurses where I work.
So, all expat Brits, please let me know how you plan to maintain your NMC registration. Is anyone agreeable to contacting me, with a view to maybe planning an email/Skype discussion that we both can document?
I'm in Chicago btw, so if there are any other UK nurses here, we can meet in Panera instead : )

Hi, if I can help in anyway, discussion or confirmation that's fine ?
Hello David,
I'm not sure if it's possible to revalidate if your registration has already lapsed, you would need to contact the NMC to enquire about that.
But once they have approved you to revalidate, any of us here would be happy to help. I'm in the midwest, and would be able to do this by zoom once you are ready.
Hi Skylark, thanks again for your information.
I am following the directions on the NMC website for re-joining the register. The current step requires another NMC registrant....I've copy and pasted the details below.
NMC registrant referee:
Provide the details of another NMC registrant who's registered in the same part of the register in which you are applying. They must have known you for a year out of the last three, been in contact with you during the last 6 months and must hold an active NMC Online account.
NMC Pin
Surname
I have known the above named person for at least one year and have been in contact with them during the last 6 months.
..............................I am incorrect in using the term 're-validation'. I am applying to re-register as I am lapsed.
Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
David
From the NMC website;
6. Supporting declaration and references
We’ll ask you for references in your application. Your referees need to be three different people.
Referee 1
We’ll ask you for the name and Pin of a NMC registrant to provide a supporting declaration of your health and character. This referee should:
be from the same part of the register as you are applying to join (for example, if you’re applying to readmit as a nurse, your referee must also be a registered nurse),
have known you for at least one year in the last three years, and
have been in contact in the last six months.
Referee 2
We’ll ask you for the name and email address of your employer.
Referee 3
We’ll ask for the name and email address of someone on our list of approved signatories that you have known for the last year.
Overseas practice
If you’re declaring overseas practice we’ll also ask you for:
A certificate of professional standing from the country you are declaring practice from - you need to contact the regulator you’re registered with to request this.
https://www.nmc.org.uk/registration/returning-to-the-register/checklist-of-requirements/
Your request intrigued me so I had a look on the NMC website. The part I have bolded above seems to exclude anyone you would get on this site because if you could cover that you would not need to come here.
I cannot help you in any way as I allowed my registration to lapse in 2019.
It seems that to revalidate is easy enough if you have contacts and are willing to jump through the hoops but to actually re-register seems to be very difficult. I remember when I was allowing my registration to lapse that the NMC sent me warnings that it would be extremely difficult to re-register and that is in the UK. Seems to be impossible if you are outwith the UK.
I hope I am reading this wrong and that you get re-registered but I would not hold out much hope.
Good luck.

I can get referee 2 and 3, it's referee 1 that I am looking for. Someone currently on the register....
Yes I got that, but no one on this site has "known you for at least one year in the last three years, and have been in contact in the last six months."
This seems to be the sticking point. You may be asking someone to lie and tell the NMC that they know you but are they willing to do that? Are they willing to put their registration on the line for you? For clarity, I do not worry about that, if someone is willing to do that for you then great, go ahead. It makes no never mind to me and may be the only way for you to get re-registered but...
Again, I hope I am reading this wrong and it will be as easy as just finding a confirmer and having a Zoom meeting but I don't think so. Good luck and I hope you can get what you need.
Hi Dave,
I empathise, I've been in the exact situation and I stopped looking for solution 1 year ago because I changed my career path so I didn't need to return on the register even tho I finally found the 2 referees. They don't need both to be on the nmc register, only 1, the other can be someone from their approved signatory list like a lawyer, doctor, teacher, civil servant...
If you don't have it, you can take a return to practice course where you'll work as a nurse trainee in the hospital, you can look for it on the NHS job website https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/xi/direct_apply/?vac_ref=917224104 OR I'm not 100% sure if it will resolve the matter but you can book a test of competence. Hope that will help, I know the pain you are facing.
Good luck
TheUK have madeit almost impossible to re register. A nurse on this forum was in a similar situation during the pandemic when they were crying out for nurses. The board were no help and kept giving a standard reply. All I can suggest is that you find a prospective employer and get them to lobby for you to be re registered. I have maintained my registration for 30 years in case I need to return. This really is a ridiculous situation for nurses who are working and maintaining competencies fot the country in which tbey live. Good luck. Tracy
