Ugh, I HATE Conjunctivitis

It is plowing its way through the classrooms right now. I sent four home yesterday, several last week, a teacher is out today and just sent home two more kids. Really hard to keep it contained b/c our school is small and the students are all over each other all the time.

I hate it, too.

I also hate when teachers diagnose the kids with pink eye when it is not pink eye.

As OldDude says, "Stop it!!!"

Ug, pink eye is terrible. I've hated it ever since I couldn't get it out of my house for FOUR FREAKING WEEKS a few years ago. My oldest daughter was 4 and my twins were not even one. At least one of them had pink eye for FOUR FREAKING WEEKS. You can't tell a one year old to stop touching their eyes (or their siblings eyes). Also, putting drops into a one year olds eyes is significantly harder than it sounds. Ug.

Kids always come in after a friend has diagnosed them too. Or rub their eye until its red enough to alarm a teacher... Listen kids, you're heading back to class unless it is all goopy.

I hate it too. I swear it flies through the air around here, but my kids are 5 and 6 year olds.

We just had a state SN conference where an optometrist came and told all of us that the kids with viral conjunctivitis should stay home at LEAST a week. You should have seen the look on all of our faces followed by the resounding laughter. They should say that to the PARENTS who are tossing their kids back in class an hour after their appointment to get seen.

Dude. I will purposely contract viral conjunctivitis just for the one week vacation... I'll have a mild annoyance to my eyes while snacking on bon-bons and watching some Maury all day!

Suddenly districts all over the US are wondering why all of their school nurses are out sick.

"My eye is red. My teacher and my friends said I have pinkeye." It is fall. You have allergies.

Go back to class.

[On a serious note, I rarely see pink-eye in the MS/HS level, which I am very okay with. But I have become very good at spotting it! I have my conjunctivitis charts at the ready...]

I always enjoy the parents who cannot figure out why their little snowflakes still have pink eye. No one would ever guess that sharing eye drops between all of their children's icky, gooey eyes would be a problem!

Kidz- When you say the eye/eyes have to be goopy, do you mean you have to see the goop (like we ask to see the proof when a kid tells us they threw up?) Or, if they tell you they were goopy and stuck shut when they got up that morning? How do they get the golden ticket home?
