UCSF MEPN 2019

Published

Hello. I recently attended the UCSF MEPN information session and I am really excited about the program. I am still finishing my pre-reqs and I want to be as ready as possible. Anyone else out there looking to apply for 2019?

Also,I would love any advice on rounding out my application for PMHNP.

Stats:

Undergrad theater major 3.3, Science and Pre-reqs (prob) 3.7

GRE Verb 48th %tile Quant 30th %tile Analytical 18th %tile

Work Exp: 10 useless years in the film business and then 3 years Admin at private practice and hospital

Volunteer: UCLA nursing, Suicide Crisis Hotline, Veteran's Administration Domicilliary

LOR: Prob only 4 really great ones. Is not sending 5 a bad idea?

I would love to hear from you!

Hello SFdoggy,

Yes! I have questions.

1. How much free time do you have? Are you able to have a weekend?

2. How difficult is San Francisco to live in? Expensive? Do you use student housing?

3. Does it seem like students are able to get financial aid?

4. Do you like what you are doing?

Hi prospective MEPNs! I'm a current MEPN, FNP track. I know how nerve-racking this time of year can be (at least it was for me a year ago). Please let me know if you'd like any insights for the interview day. We have a nice chunk of nothing for the next few weeks, and I'm happy to help!

Hi sfdoggy! Congratulations- you are about half way done with your first year! I hope that you are able to enjoy your time off.

I would very much appreciate any insights and advise that you could share about interview day. What questions were you asked? Did any of them stump you? I have read through previous years threads and have founds those helpful, but do I wonder if things have changed much from year to year. It is very sweet of you to offer your help and very much appreciated.

Hey! Sorry for the late reply!

1. I am in the B Cohort, meaning we just finished L&D, Public Health and a socio-cultural course; the A Cohort continued with the Med-Surg portion. We have had way more free time during the weekends this quarter than in summer quarter, wherein we had a test 3/4 Sundays each month. There is definitely time to see friends/family/partners/whomever, although my hanging out time has become truncated.

2. I didn't get student housing (it's on a lottery system). This city is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. I live with multiple roommates and pay more in rent than my friends in other cities do for two-bedroom apartments. I don't necessarily find it difficult to live here: transport is pretty good, and there are plenty of places to go grocery shopping. A car might be necessary for rotations, though.

3. Student loans: yes, for the most part. You can usually qualify for PLUS loans, which are government unsubsidized loans for graduate students. Scholarships: MEPNs each get a scholarship of varying amounts (typically less than $10,000). Other classmates have gotten really large scholarships as well.

4. More or less, yes. I love clinical rotations, and I have enjoyed the instructors this quarter. It is a VERY competitive program, though, and it took me a while to get used to the pace. Overall, I am very glad I am here.

Best of luck to you!!!

It's my pleasure!

I think I got very lucky: the people who interviewed me were definitely interested in learning about who I was as opposed to stumping me (this happened in an interview at another school, so I understand the worry!). An FNP faculty member and local nurse took turns asking me various questions, and were very engaged listeners.

Hmmm, it's fuzzy, but here are some questions I know I was asked:

1. Why FNP?

2. Why UCSF?

3. Describe a difficult situation and how you resolved it.

4. What are some challenges you think you'll face as a nurse?

5. How did you get to this point? (something along those lines. AKA, why did you choose to change careers (or not) and pursue this?)

6. What questions do you have for us. I REALLY recommend having some follow-up questions for them. I forget what I'd asked, but anything you'd like to know (rotations, instructors, extra-curricular, etc.) is a good place to start.

Good luck! It's honestly not as bad as it seems. If they do a meet-and-greet with current MEPNs, I definitely recommend going. It was very helpful last year.

How did the interview go?

A nervous wreck lol. How many people do you know got into your specialty? And how were interviews?

Sorry for just getting back to you now, but the Fall quarter really got the best of me as I was an 'A'. There were 10 of us that got in for CNM/WHNP last year. My interview was great. I was interviewed on the first Friday group last year and could not have asked for a better experience. I am happy to answer any additional questions and am sorry that I didn't check the board before yesterday's first round of interviews.

Another thing I wanted to mention to everyone was that some in my cohort applied to MEPN more than once after being rejected in the previous year or years. Some were not accepted right away and were placed on a waiting list and joined the cohort. So I just want to stress that if this is what you want, if UCSF is really what your heart is set on, it is possible.

Best of luck to all the future MEPNs!!!

Could any current MEPNs clue me in on how much they are paying in monthly rent? I know for sure I'll have to subsidize with student loans if I'm accepted, but I'm curious how much you all are paying. Thanks!

Everyone is paying different amounts depending on whether they are living in student housing or privately owned accommodation. Our circumstances are all different. Some people live in the East Bay or South Bay and commute while some of us live in SF. Some people live with family, partners or roommates and some live alone. If you're wanting to live in student housing in SF, prices vary depending on whether you want to share a room in a UCSF owned apartment or have your own room in a shared UCSF apartment (about $1200 a month and up). You are averaging between $1,000 and $1,800 a month for a room in SF depending on location, type of accommodation, how many people you live with, etc. Good luck!

Those UCSF apartments are a sweet deal. I wonder what the lottery odds are for getting one of those.

On a separate note, did anyone else notice that there was a sign-in sheet for the meet and greet? My inner paranoiac wonders what they do with those names.

Hi guys!

I had my interview on the 25th for AGPCNP.

Does anybody know when they will decide by?

And will it just show up under application status online?

Good Luck to everyone!

Looking back at the past few years, decisions have been sent out between 2/7-2/21. Most often right around valentines day.

I emailed in to ask for timeline. They will make the decision next Thursday the 7th, and the communicate it as soon as possible, probably the next week.
