Hello. I recently attended the UCSF MEPN information session and I am really excited about the program. I am still finishing my pre-reqs and I want to be as ready as possible. Anyone else out there looking to apply for 2019?
Also,I would love any advice on rounding out my application for PMHNP.

Hi @Psychache, I know how exciting it is to be applying to the UCSF MEPN program. Looks like you got a very early jump on creating the 2019 thread. I applied for the 2018 cohort and I am happy to answer questions that you might have but at this point in time I don't know if I am admitted yet.
My current cohort doesn't find out whether we are admitted until later this week so we are all eagerly waiting.
It looks like you come from a very different background before joining nursing as a second career. It was the same with me and my career. I was a Business and Econ Major in college and minored in Legal Studies (I wanted to go into business law originally). I worked in financial services for many years before making the switch to nursing. I applied for the CNM/WHNP specialty this year after 2 years of pre-reqs with an additional year to apply to the program.
I continue to be excited about the program every time I talk to someone about UCSF and my specialty. It will likely be the same for you. It is a great program with wonderful students and faculty.
Your fellow applicants will start to comment further on this thread closer to the application start date. I wish you luck on your application when they open this summer.
P.S. Re: re your LOR questions, the quality of your LORs are more important then the quantity. The school does take a very holistic view when it comes to their applicants. It isn't only one factor but a combination of many things that helps to decides whether you are accepted into the program.

Hey Psychache, I recently interviewed for the 2018 cohort. I wasn't admitted, unfortunately, but will likely re-apply for 2019. Happy to answer any questions you have about the process. I only sent 4 letters of recommendation and still was invited to interview :)

Glad to see a 2019 forum. Last year I quit my job after working as a healthcare administrator for 17 years to complete my pre-reqs (full-time) for the MEPN program. I am curious if there are others, either current MEPN, alumni MEPN, or a soon-to-be applicant of MEPN in similar scenarios. In particular, what volunteering opportunities have you taken and what's driving your decision for the specialty?
Oh wow! I just saw your response. Thank you. Now that you've gone through the process, what are your thoughts? Do you feel like coming from a different background was a hinderance?
I'm glad to hear that not getting in the first year is not the end. I had a professor tell me that "No, is just the first sentence of a good story".
How much of your applications were geared towards a rn vs. your aprn?

Hey everyone!
I've been reading past threads and have learned so much! I'm applying for the upcoming 2019 cohort. I'm applying for the FNP specialty. I'm super nervous!!! It doesn't seem like there are much people commenting on this thread, so I hope it picks up again and that I hopefully get to meet you guys. I don't really have much clinical volunteer experience, but hope that they will still see potential in me.
Question: did anyone have an individual study plan or take classes in preparation for the GRE? I haven't had the chance to take it yet, but plan to take it at least 2-3 times before the summer is over.
Hi jyfung!
I have been wondering about how to prep for the GRE. I feel like it is my biggest weakness. Does anyone have suggestions?
Hi, Psychache --sorry I missed your earlier response. My thoughts on the process are that it is a very competitive program and so you want to be prepared to show what a rock star you are. I come from a health care background but am switching from one specialty to another and I can't say whether that helped or hurt me in the last round. I know several people who didn't get in the first time and hear that reapplying is common. I have even heard stories of people applying three times. I feel like the application is geared entirely toward APN, but you need to be prepared to discuss why you're interested in RN nursing and your understanding of the field.

Yes, I took a month long GRE prep class and it was really helpful. I spent another month studying on my own after finishing the class and took the GRE twice. My scores were clearly improved by the work I did in preparation.

Hi Everyone,
I had no idea that a thread had started for 2019. I wish you all the best of luck once the application opens.
I follow UCSF on Twitter and they announced that the GRE requirement was no longer required for [some] PhD and Master programs.

I was a little annoyed when I saw this because I already registered to take it in July. Oh well, since I can't get a refund I'll still take it because other programs may need it but I just thought I'd let you guys know.
