  1. I don’t think you are eligible. However, you are a very good candidate for the hrsa nhsc scholarship. I am a PMHNP direct entry and I was awarded the nhsc scholarship last year.
  2. If you are passionate about underserved communities apply! Nurse corps offers scholarships for nursing students-you must have an expected family contribution less than $5,000ish based on the newer Fafsa (a year earlier than it used to be) To actually be considered. NHSC offers scholarships for primary care provider Students including MDs In family practice or psych, NPs in family practice or psych, and dentists. It is not based on EFC but, coming from and showing commitment to underserved communities is HUGE. This scholarship is to help providers afford an education and serve a community in need as a career. I am lucky to be a scholar this year. This scholarship will pay for all three years of my np program tuition (Greater than $200,000- Don’t hesitate because of tuition.) and a Stipend each month. And my job is to work in an NHSC site immediately after school full time for 3 years which, may include relocating. I think the strongest part of my application was The essays and detailed letters of rec. one of my letters was from a mentor I have known for 20 years who has witnessed a lot of the “underserved” part of my life. I think HRSA is pretty open minded, considering the part where I dropped out of college and didn’t go back for ten years. Apply! Also, you can use these essays and lor for most other scholarships.
  3. It means they are a great resource! All the medical fields use shorthand for what year student you are. M1 is a 1st-year medical student, D1 is first-year dental school, etc. MEPN Program is 3 years Year 1: MEPN year RN classes Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring. Take NCLEX in summer. Year 2: NP1 Your NP specialty. Maybe a minor? Fall, Winter, Spring, and possible Summer Year 2: NP2 Same, but with feeling. Don't worry, there are more tests.
  4. Go team! I think that many people who want to get into a clinical psychiatric role are in a different position than other medical specialties. I'm not sure who is going to /can let you shadow or get too close without a license in Psych. Psych is one of HIPPA's favorite babbies. Most people have the same paraprofessional experience that you have. The best interview advice I got was to make other plans besides UCSF. Go into your interviews wanting this but not needing this. Last year the interviews were with one nurse representing the RN role and one representing your NP specialty. Some interviewers are more conversational and some are not going to give you any feedback. They asked me a lot of questions. Basically- practice interviews with someone and know yourself. Whenever a cliche pops out of your mouth, find out what you really mean. What do you think is the hardest thing about being an RN? Where do you see yourself practicing? Why UCSF? Why your specialty? How do you handle conflict? How do you practice self-care? I am actually not sure what the connection with the VA is. I saw that when I applied. I spoke with a student and a faculty member and no one could figure out what was happening with UCSF and the VA. However, UCSF is very involved with underserved communities such as people experiencing homelessness. Good luck!
  5. Hi. I am a MEPN year PMHNP. My stats are right up front on last year's thread. I was accepted off the waitlist even though I was advised that was VERY not likely. We have a lot of PMHNPs this year. I think 8. We also have a very large MEPN class. I believe that the spots that are open in each specialty really have more to do with how many spots are free in the master's specialty. It would be nice to know all the numbers but, I have learned that my imagination of UCSF SON as a concrete institution was wrong. This place is alive and growing, changing, adapting. Whatever our class experience, there are over a hundred incredible nurses working to make it better for your class. So, if a master's specialty gains a new instructor or changes structure, etc, those numbers may change. Sorry, the answer is squishy.
  6. Have any NP students received a counter signature on their contract? Apparently it is only visible when you download the contract- on the bottom. I see that many dental and medical students have been countersigned.
  7. In the US government secretary means, an official who is selected by the President and is in charge of a particular department of the government.
  8. Hi Guys, Good luck! I am lucky enough to be a MEPN this year. I think the most helpful step I took in my application process was going on Wyzant and having an English teacher look at my essays at the last minute. She advised me what to cut to make the two pages and she questioned me when my storytelling was weak. UCSF is a progressive school that values diversity and people who overcome difficult experiences. It's ok to be open. GPA and quantifiable facts are a very small part of your application. I.e. I dropped out of college. So, I would take this last weekend to make sure you are trying to give them an impression of who you are and not trying to impress them with who you are. May the force be with you.
  9. I thought the emails that went out today are for NHSC.
  10. Actually here it is. https://www.hrsa.gov/sites/default/files/hrsa/about/budget/HRSA-fy-2019-budget-in-brief.pdf
  11. This may be pure conjecture. I don't remember where I heard this from, but aprox 5000 applicants and 150 scholarships. A while ago I was able to find the HRSA budget. I don't know what you call it but it's the official funding allocated from the federal govt. It was slashed up and down. Compared to last year most line items were defunded and the money was moved to an opioid crisis budget. Still for HRSA and the scholarships and loan repayments, but also the total budget was cut significantly. I wish healthcare was not political.
  12. If you applied for NHSC- SDN (student doctor network) has a thread on 2019-2020 that outlines some of the dates. I guess there are at least two rounds of credit checks.
