UBC 2022 Nursing

Published

Hey guys! I just wanted to start this post for anyone applying for the 2022 cycle for UBC nursing.  Just wondering where everyone is coming from and their experiences.

Really feels like they emphasized grades this year - I’m #88 with 1 casper, 1 supp, 4 GPA.

Hi #88, meet #87 ?. My scores were 2 GPA, and the other two scores were both 3. Curious, eh? For the record, my background is completely in the humanities, and I have two Master’s degrees, neither of which have anything to do with health sciences of course. Well, the positive side is we’re way more prepared for next cycle.

I'm already attending BCIT at the moment! I was planning to transfer to UBC if I got in but unfortunately got rejected. Let me know if you have any questions about the application process!

Thanks @khj329 !  One thing I'm wondering is if they look more closely at recent grades versus grades that are way in the distant past?  (see my recent post above explaining ^^)  If not, I am worried I don't have a chance at BCIT.  Also how did you find the Snapshot interview process?  Is there an opportunity to explain more about your experiences/skills etc, in that interview?  The BCIT application form is very short compared to the UBC one, it seems there isn't much opportunity to showcase why you think you'd be a good student and eventually nurse.  Thanks for any advice ?

I’m also 46, and likewise have had health issues, children, etc. My advice is to look into BCIT and Langara regardless, and perhaps consider checking out VCC’s healthcare aide program, which is relatively short (under a year I think) if you want to add medical experience to your application.

I will, thank you!  Who knows maybe we will end up in a program together and we can be the 46-yr-old-moms of the class ?

Out of those who were accepted, for whom was this their first (and only) try?

That would be fun! I also have a daughter who is almost 19, a son who is almost 18, and a daughter who is 11. It’s been interesting applying to school along with my children, to say the least!

This was my first time applying and I was accepted. I just graduated from UBC with a bachelors in biology honours. I am 24 and took a little longer than normal to finish up undergrad because I spent my first 2 years at Langara and transferred to UBC, but I accumulated a lot of experience during my undergrad and I think that helped my supplemental a lot. If you have any questions about application process feel free to ask and I can try and help! ❤️ good luck

This was my first time applying and I got in! I graduated from SFU with a BA in Health Sciences, I’m 25 and I did coop which made my degree a bit longer but I was able to get a lot of relevant experience which I spoke a lot about in my application. After graduating I worked with Fraser health as admin for the covid vaccine clinics which I think really boosted my application! Definitely getting as much work/volunteer health care experience as you can would really help your application as it shows your dedication and passion to this field.
I also was in the 4th quartile for my Casper’s which I think also helped a ton. I prepped a lot and ended up just writing as much as I could and completely disregarded all spelling/grammar/punctuation which is what I think helped me get a good score, so that definitely something to think about if you end up writing it again. Best of luck to all those on the wait list!

Thank you @lotusmntnmama !  I will check it out.

I'm worried about my chances to get into the nursing program at schools other than UBC, since UBC is good that they only look at the most recent 30 credits.  In my situation, my overall cumulative average grades since year 1 at UBC are not good (due to a variety of reason like health issues, having a baby, trying to go to school with a young child at home, etc).  But now my 'baby' is almost 20 years old and I've been able to step up my grades a lot in the past 8 courses I've taken (mostly A's), working towards finishing my B.Sc.  I'm a 'mature' student - 46 yrs old.  So I am worried that other schools will look at my entire academic results, even from back in the mid-90's when I did terribly, and reject me right off the bat.

(note: my most recent 8 courses' grades are very good, but the 2 before that were not - so my overall for the past 30 credits was still not great - hence my '4' rank I got for grades)

Does anyone know if any other schools only look at more recent grades, other than UBC?

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated ?

I would check out VCC, Langara, and BCIT. If you don't have a degree yet, it might be a better option to do a full 4 year program.

Thanks @yahjeh !  I will definitely check out all 3.

I have only 1 course left for my B.Sc, which starts on May 16th, so then my degree will be completed (finally!) ?  (it's a 4-week Summer course at UBC)
