TV's ER new NM, Eve

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I've missed the past couple of episodes this season (you know, clinical and studying and all). Anyway, I'm tickled so far to meet the new nurse manager on the show, Eve. Maybe the producers are finally hearing what real nurses thought of the representation on the show. She seems promising.

On the other hand, I can't believe this show has been on for 9 or so years and they STILL *all* wear every single stethoscope backwards! :smackingf

I do kind of like her because she came in and saw a mess of an ER - not up to date on procedures, too much staff drama, etc. The thing I didn't agree with was how she bawled Kovac out right in front of that kid's mother. You NEVER contradict another staff member like that in front of the family. Small things, maybe, but not things like a life-saving procedure, and how the resident screwed up. It was probably all for the drama, though, but still, it was totally inappropriate.

Realizing this is JUST TV, I thought the character started off a bit strong. In the real world, when you see ANY non-MD act like that, they usually get escorted out/transferred/disappeared in about 5 minutes. I had a good laugh watching her berate all the doc's, but again that is fantasy TV.

Oh, I know it's just TV. I just didn't appreciate them showing a nurse b****ing out a doc right in front of the family. Nurse manager or not, that was very unprofessional.

Specializes in Education, Acute, Med/Surg, Tele, etc.

Okay, I liked her! I thought she was perfect in her role as someone hired by the admin to take up the reigns in that ER and get the job done! A very "lets get down to it" attitude for someone new trying to establish herself! That does happen in real life...been there and a victim of it myself (not as a manager) LOL~!

But there is one thing about ER that is pretty consistant! What did you think about characters when they first came into the show???

I thought Dr. Green was a geek to make the eye candy Dr. Ross look even better, but soon Dr. Green was my most beloved character (once they started to focus on his life...loved it!)!

Dr. Carter...more eye candy that was wayyy to sensitive and whimpy for my tastes...but wow, he grew up as a character and I really like him too!

Dr. Benton, okay Mr Karate kid with a serious attitude! I really didn't like him at all till he blended in well with others (vs being the bad boy meanie). Not my favorite, but did improve with time.

Dr. Corday, pompus and way too strong (like our new character) at first..blended in very well and I loved her! I really liked her relationship with Dr. Green! (THE only relationship on ER I liked!).

Weaver...also was a very harsh upstart at first, very interesting plot for her character but now I rather like her. She was more apt to kick someone out of the team or change a schedule at first than this new character...I think Carrie was more harsh than this character when she started. Both characters have traits they feel they need to overcome and are being very strong to establish respect (this will fade).

I think this new character is going to do nicely, and I was cheering her on when she did the old IV vs Oral antibiotic spin! Didn't like her being overly judgemental and saying things in front of patients/families that were not professional...but like that doesn't happen in real life???

I thought she was a bit domineering but in a good way. However these people acted as if the had never known she was coming and she just appeared in a JCAHO class. I liked it when the weasel said "nursing is an autonomous profession not under the control of the doctors" [sic] or something like that.

The one thing I did not like is her confronting Sam on the street and changing her schedule with no notice. Shouldn't there have been time for an appeal or something. I assume the character will mellow and blend better as we and they get to know her.

I have put a doctor or two in his place. I will not stand silently by and take anything from any physician. And I have never been fired from a position. These are MY real-life experiences, not fantasy TV.

That just put a smile on my face! I am still a student (May '06) & so far the nurses I have seen just take whatever........Even when the pt. needs someone to speak out for them. I sure hope someone like you will teach me the ropes w/ correct ways to handle tough situations & when to do so. :)

I think that as a new manager, not knowing the personalities, strengths and weaknesses of them people she now supervises, she came way too strong for the first day on the unit. And can you just imagine a manager coming in and questioning each and every thing every person was doing? In the presence of family members? I don't think so.

Also, Sam needs to get herself to her union rep. I know they are unionized. Now way can the manager just mess with FTE hours like that without justifying it in some way.

It will be interesting to see how they continue her character. I didn't really care for her: way too full of herself.

Believe it or not, I recieved my initial education in the mid60s. However, our instructors taught us that we were not subservient to physicians. We were taught to be polite but firm, in our response to any physician, regardless of their stadge of training. I use the firm tone of voice, inviting the physician to have a private chat with me. Usually they did, then I told them I was a well educated and experienced individual, that expected to be treated with the same respect as they did, and as my staff would expect as well. It usually did the trick. Never get into a shouting match, you will lose. No matter how much they get your goat, don't get mad, get even :wink2: If they insist on shouting, calmly tell them you will continue the conversation when they are calmer and quietly walk away. I had only one physician reach out and grab me. I was the last nurse he ever put his hands on and my supervisor supported me. And if she had not, I would have resigned my position. I filed a complaint with the hospital' Chief of Medicine and demanded a hearing. I won and the physician lost his admitting priviliges for a week. It was a small victory but he never touched anyone again.

Pick your battles. And remember that your patient always comes first.

Yes the real Cook County Hospital is unionized and that little stunt would never fly!!!!!

Maybe doctors sometimes need to be put in their place, but personally I don't think in front of other staff or patient's is the proper place. The chances of it being produtive when delivered in that manner are slim to none.

I know it's just TV but TV does influence heavily how the "real world" is perceived, especially by those not in the profession.

And I've dated doctors, not as a nurse but still in the hospital setting, and still managed to have a professional work atmosphere. I love the show, but so many things make me mad about it!

One more thing, don't you think it was weird to just introduce the burnt to a crisp guy and then not have it go anywhere? What's up with that?

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

It's nice to see a professional nursing TV role, instead of the oversexed, fake-blonde, fake boobs hanging out of the shirt crap that's typically on TV.
