Trigger Warning!

Mods : This may be in the wrong place as I have yet to figure out how to get to the break room.

I have been told at my school and facility that we are now required to give a trigger warning before we speak an opinion that may offend the sensibilities of another. Something on the lines of "I have to warn you that I am about to say something that may trigger a strong negative emotion in you!" This gives members of the intended audience the opportunity to recuse themselves from the conversation to avoid being triggered or otherwise negatively effected by what I am about to say!

IMHO political correctness is simply suppression of constitutionally protected free speech which is a basic human right in this country (USA). I am wondering how many others on this forum find this trend ridiculous. I am purposely not going into specific details or issues with this - just wondering how many of my fellows feel about this.

He found and successfully argued that this was not protected and the football teams are private entities and the stadiums are private property. So no free speech protection.

I have to agree with you OP. People need to understand that it is okay to disagree.

It is unfortunate that the current media, corporations, and university education further contribute in creating a division among both genders, politics, and races, on every little thing to either sell news or to make money.

Freedom of speech in short of inciting violence should be protected.

I am also glad that there are other nurses who think like this.

I agree that the whole idea of someone being triggered has got out of hand. Of course nobody should purposefully offend others and if they do they are a jerk. That being said, we are all human and will offend others by way of simple human nature (unintentional), simple misunderstanding, or by having a different opinion (sometimes based on life hx etc). I am afraid our society has lost the ability to suck it up and move on. Instead the "triggered" become "victims" who need compensation in one form or another. Schools, and esp. colleges, are supposed to be the place of learning how to hear other points of view, discuss them, learn from each other, and move on, whether you agree or disagree doesn't really matter, the point should be to at least hear and truly consider anothers opinion/point of view. The word trigger, IMO, also sort of implies that the "triggered" has no say so in being triggered (ot their reponse to the trigger) when in fact of course they do. I remember my parents telling me, and me telling my kids to just suck it up, ignore it, whatever, not every insult/offense (real or imagined) needs to be dwelt on. People have lived for how long without having to give a trigger warning, come on now people, get a grip!

I thought the acceptable social norm was to preface a potentially offensive remark by saying "I don't mean to offend you, but..." or "Please don't take this personally, but..."

Then proceed to say your offensive remark.

So what they’re saying is using the word trigger in a sentence before making the remark is license to offend people? -or the word trigger inherently is calming? “Excuse me but why don’t you just trigger down.” ? #weird

Then someone tells "ACTIVE SHOOTER!" and the swat team takes out the offending party.

I shouldn’t laugh because I realize this is a real thing for some people who are emotionally triggered over something that “hits home” or offended by another’s comments about a particular situation. Seriously, how are we to babysit everyone elses emotions and life stressors before breathing ourselves? I don’t expect anyone to give me a warning. In fact it would seem very strange to me and in some way over compensating for whatever it is they’re about to express. There are no built-in trigger warnings in social media and a large part of the population are using those platforms. I can manage my emotions myself. Walk away, turn the computer off, or otherwise remove yourself from the situation. I learned that in adolescence. I don’t need a stranger essentially telling me to “calm down” because they think they know what “triggers” me.

It’s total crap and a lot of it comes from people in my generation that were just babied through childhood. I may have had it rough but my parents were old school - if you don’t like what someone said, ignore it and move on, and if you get your panties in a wad constantly, the common denominator is you.
