I am constantly blown away by the "kids" texting in class. In Micro there are a few girls who text through lecture AND lab. In my ethics class there a guy that sits next to me who has never bought the class texts and spends the whole class time either writing his own name over and over whatever paper he has in front of him or he's texting. Two weeks ago he asked the professor a question and while she was answering he was texting! She seemed to just pretend it wasn't happening. About 10 minutes after the roll got passed around he just left after that. :angryfire
Hmm. I text a bit, discreetly, in my chem class (lecure and lab). I am also getting an A+ (not repeating the class, either). I don't think texting is necessarily linked to how much you are paying attention. I fidget a lot, and am always doodling all over my paper, texting, thinking about things going on in my life, etc.. and I'm also learning chem.
I think there's definitely considerable overlap in the students who don't pay attention in class and the students who complain about not doing well or how hard it is.
Their loss, as long as they're not distracting me, so I care more about side conversations than texting.
Our first test had a question where we had to fill in a chart. The professor explicitly mentioned that we had to know the chart, and reminded the class a couple of times. During the test, I overheard a student asking him about the question and saying that she didn't know it was going to be on the test. She just so happens to carry on side conversations. Go figure.
I guess I never have worried about them being in healthcare- if they carry on like that, would they really even be able to complete the program?

"A bit" is a world of difference from texting non-stop...as in every couple of minutes. Not only is the constant click click clicking highly irritating I just think it shows a lack of regard for the professor and anyone within earshot. Some people can multi-task, and you're obviously able to do that...I'm mainly speaking of the people whose texting (and side conversations and whatever else) is distracting to other students. As long as you're not bothering anyone else, then more power to you. Good job on your great grade!
What I love is the students who walk in 10 minutes late on a regular basis... carrying an obviously fresh drink from some establishment that takes a while to make drinks (Starbucks, etc.).
The main culprit for this in my class is also a chronic texter.
(I admit to sending the occasional SMS myself, though)
A girl in my micro class spent the whole time either texting or talking. Even after she got done with her test, she was texting, and there were people who weren't done yet. I'm sure her fingers going a mile a minute was just as annoying to them as it was to me! Then there's the people who insist on chewing their gum so loudly you could hear them from outside. These are the reasons I have since opted for online classes!

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:
Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?
Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.
Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.
Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!
Girl A: (hugs)
Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.
Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****
Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.
Girl A: TTYL
I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?
