  1. My boyfriend and I applied for the LVN to RN program, still waiting for our letters, though I emailed the nursing office and they said they will be sent this week. This is the 2nd time we will be applying hopefully we'll get in this time. Best wishes to everyone else! Don't give up!
  2. It depends on how the woman views a "male nurse" I personally have no problem with it, I guess I am biased because I am dating one :)He's very smart, caring, MANLY, and hard working which is what I love about him. We can talk about how our shifts went and we totally understand each other. If a woman can't respect you being in our profession she's not worth your while, just sayin! Good luck!
  3. $28.25 with 1.5 years SNF experience in a Hosptial Setting - San Francisco
  4. Try home health, I'm pretty sure Health Link Home Health Agency (San Francisco) is still hiring LVN new grads right now, the pay is lower but ya gotta start somewhere! Good luck to you! Don't give up! I graduated from my LVN school in 2009 started at SNF & did home health on the side.Just recently I got hired at Laguna Honda Hospital in SF (I applied 4 times) so it pays to be relentless
  5. Hello all, I just recently started my first job and am still doing orientation, though the DON at my facility only believes that 5 days is enough =\ I am going to be in charge of 17 patients -YIKES! I have already run into some mean and a few nice co-workers, though the pt. load is just super overwhelming for me... I know I probably shouldn't be complaining because I know of Nurses who are in charge of WAY MORE patients, but please anyone out there could you give me some support or tips on how to survive this. I am working at a Sub Acute facility and it just seems like 8 hours will never be enough time for me to complete all my med passes, treatments, admissions/discharges, MD orders, Labs, weekly & daily charting, etc... I am trying very hard to be strong and not have a nervous breakdown, I was always the type of person who could handle a lot of stress, but this time around I don't know how I will be able to manage... Could anyone please offer any advice? I love nursing but I am running on low battery to function at this point
  6. Just wanted to share my story... My bf and I met during Nursing school and are still together after almost 2 years... No complaints here and it's definitely refreshing being with somebody who understands the ins & outs of the profession
  7. Hello all! I am going to start my first job as an LVN next week and wanted to know which BRAND or MANUFACTURER sells the best sized PETITE SCRUBS? Also, if possible could you recommend any websites that sell them for fairly cheap or at reasonable prices? Thanks! Emily
  8. It was like that for me during my 1 year at LVN school... But in all honesty, I never really cared for people who would act that way... I ignored any rudeness that came my way and if it woulda gotten way outta hand (which thank goodness it didn't) I would have gotten the administration involved. I am sure you have great friends outside of this program & you don't need these people's friendship... My mentality was to get in there & get out and to be the best nurse I could be... Hope this helps!
  9. I am glad to hear another success story from a New Grad on here! I was just hired at a local facility PRN position as well, and to tell you the truth they didn't have to hire me at all. I was just lucky to have known someone that worked there who also put in a good word for me. With that being said I also live in California (Bay Area) where the job market for New Grads is horrible (some waiting months & months or others having to relocate) Congrats again & good luck!!!
  10. I was just hired Per Diem at a SNF for now until there will be openings down the line. I am hoping to get more hours soon though, but nonetheless I am grateful for the opportunity (especially since I am living in the Bay Area, CA) where tons of New Grad Nurses are unemployed at the moment or have been for months now.
  11. Just wanted to update: I just got hired and I start my orientation on Monday morning. I feel so grateful and blessed to be given this opportunity to be of service to my future patients.
  12. 1. How was homework, exams, finals like? is there one daily? weekly? monthly? 2. How long did it take you to pass your NCLEX? 3. My primary family is in souther cali and visit them often, say every 2 weeks or so, would I still be able to do that? or will there be to much studying to do anything as far as traveling? 4. How much time in studying should i put in daily? would i have a "life" outside of school? 5. Did you find a job already? How is the pay? dont have to give exact amount, i just want to know what to expect as far as pay, hehe... 6. What kind of physical work did you guys do in class, besides the extern... 1) There wasn't too much homework just TONS of studying I mean u had quizzes 2 times a week most of the time. I was the Salutatorian of my class (Graduated with the 2nd highest GPA) so you could say I was an over achiever but those quizzes were challenging & you had to score above a 75% and if you didn't that was considered a FAILING score. As long as you put in a good amount of hours and have a pretty good memory I think you'll be ok. There are no midterms only Final exams for each subject you will take. 2) I took the NCLEX 3 months after I graduated & passed... I thought it wasn't hard at all because of all the prepping I did during the school year. 3) Well that question is all depending on how you're doing with your studying and your grades... if you are comfortable with your scores and think you can properly manage some time off for your family then do so, cuz everyone needs a break & gets burned out some time. 4) That question is also variable and it all depends on how fast you can read the material, absorb it, and master it. I gave myself at least 2-4 hours a day just to be on the safe side. 5) I just had my first interview on Wednesday and I am pretty sure I got the job, just waiting for the Director of Nursing to call me back this week for the available shifts she will have for me. But in reality, it can be very hard to find a job as a New grad (not trying to discourage you at all) but if you have connections (in my case I did) then do whatever you can even apply in person to hospitals & nursing homes to beat out the competition. 6) The only physical work you did was at your clinical rotations for your patients (lifting or transferring them) Hope this helps!
  13. The DSD asked me what position I was applying for, and I told her LVN. She then informed me that in THEIR facility it is also the same as Charge Nurse.
  14. Hello all, I just wanted to share my very first interview as a new grad... This past Wednesday, I had my very first interview with a wonderful SNF nearby my home. I am a new grad LVN and I was interviewed by the DSD (Director of Staff Development) who told me all about the facility, what your duties would entail, orientation, benefits, etc. But best of all was she was extremely supportive of the fact that I was a new grad & that she would always be of help/assistance if I had any questions regarding whatever came up. She didn't ask me too many questions, but I gave her my best answers & I left feeling confident. Before the interview ended she gave me their business card and wrote down the name of their DON and to call at 2pm today to follow up (the DON will make the final decision). I also gave the receptionist a thank you card to give to her before I left :) Surprisingly, at 1:30 this afternoon the DSD gave me a call first and notified me that the DON is currently trying to see if she could add me to one of their shifts, and that she would call again next week when they figure it out (she was so sweet & told me not to feel worried & that and they are not trying to ignore me at all). So I hope and pray to God that they will take me aboard and hire me as soon as they can. During these tough times & with the Bay Area being flooded with no employment for new grads, I just feel blessed to be given the opportunity for an interview. And if I don't get the position, I am glad to have had the experience anyways. Please pray for me & I wish all you other new grads out there & experienced nurses the best of luck in your future endeavors
  15. I just graduated from NCP's LVN Program last year and I had a pretty good overall experience. You mentioned that you want to do the bridge right after, well you need all the Pre-reqs done first and then you would be eligible to do the Bridge program. To save money you should do the pre-reqs at local schools, otherwise you'll be paying way more than expected. Good luck to you.
