Tired of Pre-Reqs

Published

To everyone that is not able to apply til later this year....

anyone tired of all the pre-reqs?

Argh. Sometimes I wake up and go, "geez I will never be in NS". I mean I kinda just started spring semester of 2011, its the end of the 3rd week. All I can think about is wow, I have about 13 weeks to go.

And after that 13 weeks, I am still not eligible for NS! I still need an important O-chem class I couldn't fit into this semester. They don't offer it in they don't offer it in the summer so I have to wait until this fall to take it. I have 2nd day registration at my school, so no point going somewhere else to take it.

So I don't know. Sometimes I get bummed out because I don't qualify to apply until the beginning of NEXT year.

Thanks to this state (CA) and its budget problems and the economy, a lot of programs shut down their spring admittance. So therefore if your done with everything in fall, you have to wait to get in THE NEXT fall. Ridiculous eh?

I guess I am just venting. Everyone applying and getting accepted its awesome but I look at it and go, dang I have a long way to go STILL. I am applying to BSN programs which do require more than ADN programs but where I live, employers (that are actually hiring...rarely) want BSN over ADNs....sad...

So I guess my question is, is there anyone out there like me?

I hear you I am exhauted from taking all these preqs. Even if you apply to another school you have different preqs to complete. I feel like when will this class ever end. This current semester I am taking mat 110/college algebra and I am so looking forward to the final exam! But it will all be worth it when I get that acceptance letter. Anything worth wanting is worth working for.

LOL.. totally!

Yes, several of our CC offer Phlebotomy courses. It is a 9 month program but includes a 120 hour externship, where you get your 120 hours and over 100 draws to be able to sit for your national certification. There are other programs but they are more expensive, and don't require you to even have Med Term.. which to me is a little scary. It is regular tuition, but honestly, with the pre-reqs it pretty much comes to around 1000.00

That sucks that your spring break falls that way..

It really sucks you have to work on Easter... and I am sorry if I missed it, but what kind of work do you do now? I really want to work at the hospital I volunteer at, and I may even be doing my externship there, so fingers crossed.

Phlebs don't make really great $$ here, but it is okay. It is when you can combine the Phleb with the CNA to work in ER that you can make decent money while in school, so that is my ultimate goal.. plus I love the pace of the ER and think I would get great exposure to things there...

I have too many things occupying my time outside of school..lol.. that I had to simplify many things for this quarter... I have a horse, two boys (one is grown (21) and the other will be 16 in May), a husband working out of state, and a ton of work around our property to do lol, but it keeps me busy when I do not have my nose in a book studying!

I can't wait to take A&P and Micro.. how is Physiology?

A horse? Boys? A husband. Girl you plenty busy lol!

So you volunteer? That's awesome. I'm going to volunteer over the summer. Are you a CNA too?

I juat applied and got interviewed for this volunteer program. It is awesome you shadow nurses and NPs and PAs and when get enough hours, you can even scrub in and watch surgeries.

Unfortunately I didn't get in, I wasn't "good enough" we all know what means....

Too bad, would have been an awesome opportunity.

Well ill just volunteer the regular way.

BTW my goal is to be and ER RN one day like you....Ahhh so far away.

away I'm a server at a restaurant in a hotel. I host, serve, and buss my own tables, do room service and participate in banquets.

Blah. It's alright. I make decent money, but the more closer I get to nursing school the more I.want to quit.lol.

Physio is cool. I highly recommend getting a mini white board for that class. It's all pathways. The more you draw them the more you know them. First midterm we have about 15 pathway to remember along with new terms.

Haha this thread makes me laugh. I've been in the exact same boat. My friends and family are just tired of hearing me groan about school because it's literally been YEARS that I've been complaining and they're like "you're not a nurse yet?!" My only advice, don't give up! Keep up the hard work because it will pay off in the end. Nursing school is the hardest thing I have ever done and I can't wait to feel the accomplishment of being done.

I started a L O N G time ago but initially wanted to get a degree in Business. That decision literally lasted about 24 hours upon which I made a decision to move to another state to work and experience metropolitan living.

>.

I was very young is my excuse! :D At the time I had English comp classes, 5 humanities, physical fitness (1 cr hr is required), and four business courses accomplished. Fast forward a decade later I had job experience as a CNA and Hospital Tech for a couple of years in a teaching hospital and a long-term care facility. I liked my job but felt a lifelong career being a CNA was not enough for me. I missed school and felt that the next time I re-enrolled it would definitely be for something medical.

I finally re-enrolled in the fall of 2009 taking only one class- college algebra. I had avoided this class like the plague! I had a phobia of mathematics! I ended up acing the class and have since gone non-stop and have just 3 classes left for my Associate of Science degree with emphasis in Health Sciences :)

I will be ready to transfer to a University for my BSN during this year. Just have to get myself through this semester (4 science/3 labs...groan) and keep the momentum going!

Yes it's been a long long road so far and I could easily say I'm tired of pre-reqs. However I just thank my stubborn tenacity when a discussion about glycolysis and cytochromes occurs and everyone doesn't know what hit them! Since I've already discussed this in other classes I feel pretty darn confident about myself because I know I'll do fine on an upcoming test :) My ears perk up and I'm thinking "where have I heard this one before?! Cool beans because I know how this works already!"

Awesome story.

I'm.just basically taking it one day at a time.

I'm glad there's alor of people just like me, hurrying to get into nursing school!

Yes! Yes! Yes! I just started community college for the pre-reqs (for BSN) but it seems like the list gets LONGER and LONGER everyday... Summer registration starts 4/4 so I have been trying to get 9 to 12 hours in this summer so thats 3 less classes to take. I feel like I will be community college forever trying to get all of these done... I'm ready for nursing school!

It will happen, but the waiting does suck!

I started my pre-reqs May 2009, finished my pre-reqs in Aug 2009. Finished my co-reqs in Aug 2010. And just got my acceptance letter for an ADN program, I start this fall! So, two years after getting my pre-reqs done and applying!

That is AWESOME!!! Congrats!!! :smiley_aa

Yep, busy, but my horse is my own personal therapy LOL.. he keeps me happy for the rest of the things I "have to do"...

Please don't think "your not good enough".. maybe you just need to get a little more experience. That sounds like an incredible opportunity!

Does any of your hospitals offer job shadowing? ours do and it is pretty cool.

I took my CNA training, but I still have to take the state test.. and I am nervous about the skills part.. not sure why.. just the whole.. "you get 5 minutes for each skill and there is a one time shot.. if you mess up even once, you fail".. so I think it is just the pressure.. I just want to make sure I don't screw up at all!

Keep applying to that volunteer program and volunteer at any hospital you can.. I can honestly say it has been incredibly helpful.

Thanks for the Physio tip, I will definitely get a whiteboard!

I love the pace of the ER, and I love the OR too.. so I am still a bit undecided. I volunteered on the Oncology and Neurology floors and I can say.. not for me.. the pace is just different.

Totally! My friends and family cannot believe how long it takes.. "Just for the CC"?... When I try and explain about all the pre-reqs and the pre-reqs for the pre-reqs.. they just look at me like I am crazy...

One family member said "I can't believe you would want to take all that science crap".. I just laugh.. because those have been my favorite classes!
