Tired of Pre-Reqs

Published

To everyone that is not able to apply til later this year....

anyone tired of all the pre-reqs?

Argh. Sometimes I wake up and go, "geez I will never be in NS". I mean I kinda just started spring semester of 2011, its the end of the 3rd week. All I can think about is wow, I have about 13 weeks to go.

And after that 13 weeks, I am still not eligible for NS! I still need an important O-chem class I couldn't fit into this semester. They don't offer it in they don't offer it in the summer so I have to wait until this fall to take it. I have 2nd day registration at my school, so no point going somewhere else to take it.

So I don't know. Sometimes I get bummed out because I don't qualify to apply until the beginning of NEXT year.

Thanks to this state (CA) and its budget problems and the economy, a lot of programs shut down their spring admittance. So therefore if your done with everything in fall, you have to wait to get in THE NEXT fall. Ridiculous eh?

I guess I am just venting. Everyone applying and getting accepted its awesome but I look at it and go, dang I have a long way to go STILL. I am applying to BSN programs which do require more than ADN programs but where I live, employers (that are actually hiring...rarely) want BSN over ADNs....sad...

So I guess my question is, is there anyone out there like me?

Ugh. Psych dis not interest me. Early in my academic career, I took developmental online and put the minimum effort in and got a C. Now I have to do intro.

We have to do the intro first.. they will not let you take developmental until you have intro done.. I like psych, so it should be okay. This class is a bit of work, lots of projects, tests, exams and such, but the instructor really is worth taking the class for. She really makes it.

It is funny because I have had all really good instructors so far (knock on wood) and I think that the school I go to has one of the best nursing ADN programs in the state, AND they seem to really care about your outcomes.

They don't lose as many students as other schools yet still have a 99% pass rate on the NCLEX first pass.

They are also one of the hardest programs around here to get into, second I think only to the UWBSN program.

And it is weird how many people you find in your pre-reqs that are pre-nursing students.. and they all ask.. what are your grades? How many classes do you have left until you apply? It is so competitive even in the pre-reqs lol.

I think I can do A's this quarter, but I know I will have to put in some serious hours.. speaking of which.. I must go and finish the chapters before class today! Hope you have a great day everyone!

OMG! I hate this conversation! I have it all the time too! LOL!!

Hahhahaha. Hollar! I have the exact same conversations too! My family is always like, "How is nursing school going?" and I have to reply for the billionth time, "No, I am not quite in nursing school...I am almost finished with prerequisites and hopefully I can start this fall."

It is okay though because a couple years ago after I received my bachelor's in Communications I took some MEDICAL school prerequisites (O-chem, physics, etc.) and I would constantly get asked, "How is medical school going?" And I would roll my eyes and think, "If I were really in medical school you would not be seeing me out and about like this!"

I guess PATIENCE is a virtue we will have to master to be exemplary nurses though, riiiight?

That's awesome. Its always good to attend a top rank school. It will probably help you find a job later on!

I have a bit of a situation myself...

I am still on the verge of sticking out an extra semester to get into a BSN program

I don't know what to do.

I don't mean to sound braggy, but so far I have an A average in micro and physio, and all i need to get to a BSN program is do an extra chemistry class this fall (along with a few GE, which I know if I can ace micro and physio, I can ace those), which would mean I don't get into a BSN program until august 2012!

OR

I can apply to ADN programs this august to get in, spring 2012....

I don't know its either wait the extra semester and get into BSN program OR get into an ADN program right away.

I am kinda learning from talking to people in the southern Cali that a lot of hospitals are not hiring new grads, let alone those with ADN, even the new grad programs!

So I mean but I really want to be in NS, and doing an RN-BSN bridge is great but those program around me require you to have at least 1 year of experience while working! How am I going to get a job in this economy much less when they will hire a BSN over me anyway!!!!

So I mean what would you do? Any advice...?

I know I have a while to think about it but I am not one of those "take it one day at a time type people" if I don't look forward to at least something then I will start slacking off.

Its just another "year" of pre-reqs AGAIN....

It is a very hard decision.

I think too, if you know what the hospitals are leaning towards hiring.. it might be a good idea.

Here, we don't have to work a year to bridge to the BSN.. we have a direct transfer option.. so most of us take those classes while doing the pre-reqs. They have laid it out pretty nicely here.

I think you have to make the old "pro vs con" list for yourself. How many classes would you have to take for the BSN vs the bridge program. Is it the same?

My perspective is to apply for the ADN, and keep taking the BSN pre-req classes if for some reason you don't get in the NS program.

The bottom line.. an RN is an RN is an RN in most cases. If you have the opportunity to go to NS now.. GO!!!!lol

Shine in your clinicals, apply at every hospital for an aide job, tech job, unit secretary job, heck even housekeeping job..

It is even better if you could possibly work at one of the hospitals you will be doing clinicals at.

I think that is a big reason why people love the program at the school I go to. Almost all of the clinicals are at one hospital, and they are Incredibly respected, and they love the students that come there.. so if you do well in your clinicals and have been a volunteer or employee, it is much easier for them to offer you a residency or a job.

Just my :twocents:.

I am taking all of these peripheral classes because I figure I have to take another year of pre-reqs, I might as well get some allied health skills while I am at it, and help myself to more learning.. is that an option for you?

Can you take a quarter of something like EKG or Phlebotomy to help you get on at a hospital?

Bottom line.. what will work best for you and your schedule? I know it is a crappy place to be in.. more classes or possibly not getting a job after graduation.. but I think by the time you finish NS, the jobs may be a little better..

Chin up and all..lol.. and I am sure you will make the best decision for you!

Yea I think I have decided to do a BSN program. It's only an extra semester. I'll be done with all pre reqs and apply to BSN and ADN alike come Jan 2012. It's also good I'm applying for fall admission because a lot of ADNs (BSN are fall admittance only) are starting to take fall admittance only due to budget cuts. I know it seems far but I will be busy. I am trying to become a "tutor" for Microbiology.

Our school has a good program called supplementalary instructors. It's students who tutor groups if students in science or math. You attend lecture so your up to date with what the class is on then you set up 3 times a week to meet students (not one on one) to provide additional guidance.

It's an awesome program. I last year I taught general bio. This year I'm going to do micro

It's a good opportunity and it helps students. And it looks good on a resume.

That is awesome.. and the tutoring.. can I call you when I get to Bio in the Fall? LOL.. also.. I would think it would help to "cement" that knowledge... what a great thing you are doing....!

Yea noproblem lol

I'm really good at bio and chem. So we can keep this thread up. When you get there ill help you

I have to take Chemistry before I can take the TEAS test to get into RN school..really worried how hard that will be.

BeachBedhead, you need to stick around so I can ask questions for Micro in the fall!

Yes. I am here on my Droid checking back all the time. Any question about micro and gen/physical chemistry I am here. I love to help. Currently I am private tutoring at school for free, although I am thinking I should charge lol.

For chemistry, its all about math. Know your conversions. Know what molality is know your molarity (they are different so be careful) know about the periodic chart. Color code it. It helps. Know how things bond whether its ionically, covalent etc...

It's pretty funny, I hated chemistry in high school, I didn't pay attention and got a C.

Took it in 6weeks in college, got an A. Got top grade in the class. Now I love chem. I took a physical chem at a university( it was for engineering) and also got an A. It was pretty much calculus and chemistry combined.

If the budgets allowed t I would be a supplemental instructor for chem too.

Any questions. Post here or pm/visitor message me.

Well my worse is math...so I'm dreading it.
