Tired of Pre-Reqs

Published

To everyone that is not able to apply til later this year....

anyone tired of all the pre-reqs?

Argh. Sometimes I wake up and go, "geez I will never be in NS". I mean I kinda just started spring semester of 2011, its the end of the 3rd week. All I can think about is wow, I have about 13 weeks to go.

And after that 13 weeks, I am still not eligible for NS! I still need an important O-chem class I couldn't fit into this semester. They don't offer it in they don't offer it in the summer so I have to wait until this fall to take it. I have 2nd day registration at my school, so no point going somewhere else to take it.

So I don't know. Sometimes I get bummed out because I don't qualify to apply until the beginning of NEXT year.

Thanks to this state (CA) and its budget problems and the economy, a lot of programs shut down their spring admittance. So therefore if your done with everything in fall, you have to wait to get in THE NEXT fall. Ridiculous eh?

I guess I am just venting. Everyone applying and getting accepted its awesome but I look at it and go, dang I have a long way to go STILL. I am applying to BSN programs which do require more than ADN programs but where I live, employers (that are actually hiring...rarely) want BSN over ADNs....sad...

So I guess my question is, is there anyone out there like me?

WOW GOOD JOB!:D Keep up the good work!

All is well. My 2 weeks of hell are over with. Took my micro lab quiz, got a 91%, meh as long as I get the letter 'A' on my transcripts, I don't care how low or high the A is. That was last week along with my physio midterm the next day, it went well. This week I find out (i was second done with my physio exam and I sit in the front) appartenly 6 cheaters out of a class of 120 got caught

How dumb can you be?

Anyway this week I did my physio lab practical, not bad. and I also today did my micro midterm 2. It was hard...and everyone thinks that they bombed it! the questions were tricky and it was just hard. I knew the material but the trickiness to the questions along with the essay questions being weird, put all of us out.

Whew glad its over [for now]

Ok you finished your pre reqs this fall or last?

Your post bachelor degree is 3.82, so is that your pre req gpa or your B.A./B.S. combined? Hmm, did you have great letters of rec? All pre reqs done with the highest grades (all A's if not, 1 or 2 B's minimum) and even healthcare exp/volunteer exp? TEAS/HESI score too low?

I am sorry...you didn't make it in. And it isn't fair that its this competitive. Its as if we are all applying to med school eh?

Beachbedhead: SO glad for you!!! Way to hang in there.. I could not agree more.. an A is an A is an A!!! Good job and keep it up

and Yes I agree.. It sucks when you do everything you can and still get a no. It is CRAZY how competitive these programs are. Yes I think that you should have good grades and it should be competitive, but this is nuts in some places and I am sorry your EX got into Yale..

Hang in there though and keep applying to different programs... if you want your RN, even an ADN is an RN!

I so agree with the above [bold] statement.

But unfortunately, ADN nurses are not being hired at least in my state. Even new grad programs in CA, want BSN nurses only.

It is so ridiculous because they both take the same test and yet one is preferred over the other? That is not fair and dumb...

But reality is, when the nursing shortage hit, all these schools opened up and offered ADN's/EL-MSN/ABSN etc. Now there is no shortage, ADN nurses are more abundant because of more abundant ADN programs vs BSN programs and now you have a lot of unemployed ADN nurses, PLUS all the other BSN nurses that can't get into a job or new grad program. Now they [ADNs] all go and get their BSN but those programs are impacted too. IF your GPA sucked in your ADN program, they won't take you, and in my area, you need 1 year of experience to get into a BSN program. Its overwhelming!

And for all of the entry level masters programs (EL-MSN) for people with a degree in another field. They come out an RN with a masters and now they over-qualify to be an RN (let alone they have a RN license&no experience to begin with)

So now we have TOO MANY nurses all with varying degree types and backgrounds.

I don't know if I sound unfair but I think the state board needs to agree on a minimum degree to be eligible for an RN.I know it sounds bad, but this is getting ridiculous. If no one hires ADNs and even BSNs don't get hired (lets not forget then ABSN and EL-MSN students with no nursing experience either) now we have a bunch of unemployment!

Sorry for my rant but I want to be an RN so bad and this turn of events is making me want to apply (and get accepted) to a BSN program next fall even more! I feel bad for everyone who got their ADN/diploma w/e and can't find jobs because now hospitals and facilities are getting picky about who they hire.

I just keep hearing people who don't have jobs, (more ADN grads have no jobs than BSN grads) but I don't know. Maybe different areas are different. Thats how it is in my area

Again sorry for my rant but life sucks about now lol

Tired and DONE with Pre-Reqs and did not get into Nursing School, BSN. I had a 3.7 GPA with my BA; a 3.9 for my MA but a 3.2 for my pre-reqs (I worked my butt off for B's!!!). I worked as a C.NA. in a hospital...guess I wasn't meant to be a nurse. I looked into another BSN program (which had 4 more pre-req's... ) and they told me to take Micro, Chem and A &P I & II over because I got B's!!! No thank you....I'm done with this. Good luck to the rest of you.

One less person to compete with for a spot in school/job

JK!

Don't give up. YOU did AWESOME and still didn't get in? What did they want your blood an arm and a leg too?!?!?

I would ask them WHY you did NOT get accepted! Did you mess up on your app (yes, since schools get so many, even one little mistake on a SSN or school ID, or address, they will throw you out, happened to a friend of mine) maybe you need letters of rec? Volunteer exper?

A lot of BSN programs are not allowing people with B.S./B.A. in another field get into a BSN program unless it is an ABSN or EL-MSN. I hope you read and made sure you qualify.

Thanks but everything was correct...I checked that application several times; And they got that Rejection letter to me just fine:crying2:. Several people in my classes got accepted (all A's in the pre-req's...Stats, Chem, Micro, AP I & II) and had totally unrelated BA/BS degrees. Letters of Recommendation were not permitted...just the pre-req's and a 1 page, 3 question essay which I felt quite good about (spent about 2 months with revisions, etc.)

Other BSN schools...private... in my area are way over priced for my budget. I applied to a state University which unfortunately is an excellent school and extremely competitive. Thanks again.

You got all A's in your pre reqs too right?

MAYBE, which I hope not since you spent a lot of time on it, but MAYBE your essay is not good enough?

I think that an entrance essay is completely stupid and utterly unnecessary. Anyone can BS why the want to get in. I honestly think schools should be purely academic at this point. To weed out a lot of students (that or a CNA* req [or other health care])

The reason I say academic, is to show that you worked hard for your pre reqs, if you show your hard work, than you can possibly make it through NS.

As for the CNA req, as I can see, you are one. I think that if you can survive and enjoy doing the bare minimum as CNA, cleaning people, making beds etc....you can enjoy being and nurse and not get upset when, even though you are an RN later on down the road, you may have to do CNA work when you don't have one or are understaffed.

*The reason I say this (I am a CNA, but just do not work as one because I make better money with the job I have now) I know that there is a lot of students who work hard in their pre reqs get into NS, then once they do the "CNA" part of clinicals first, they drop (or drop because they realize it was harder than they thought) and they wasted a spot who could of say...gone to you...

Just my :twocents:

If you really want to do this then, if I were you, apply to the private school.

I would...

I know this sounds corny but "if theres a will, theres a way"

I have taken all of the pre-reqs for the ADN, and almost all of the BSN pre-reqs, so I am sick, sick, sick of pre-reqs. I'm hoping to start NS this fall, but it seems like a never ending cycle. I keep having people ask me health questions, and I tell them I'm not in nursing school yet. Then, they say "why not...what have you been doing the past year and a half?" Pre-reqs!! People still think that nursing school is like it used to be ten years ago...if you had the money, you're in. My sister went to NS in 98, and she went straight in and didn't have to take Math, English, or any of this crap. My family probably thinks I'm lying about being in school lol.

Also, I'm trying to get a job in a hospital to ease the anxiety about starting NS. I'm trying to get a PCT job, and even with a 3.9, I can't even get a nibble, so I'm frustrated to tears. I can't even get a call back on volunteering. How's that for pathetic lol. Hope it goes fast for all of us though...good luck!

Wow I know how you feel!

I have been doing pre reqs for everything! Luckily the pre reqs for a BSN is same as an ADN plus a o-chem and a critical thinking class. Of course, you know that there are pre reqs to pre reqs so that takes time. Then there is the fact that you have to GET into the classes let alone ace them!

Such aaaaaaaaaaa lllllloooonnnnnnngggg process!

BTW I know what you mean about family members.

My cousin, well cousin by marriage. She went from high school straight to a university offering a BSN/MSN programs. Well she graduated with her RN-BSN 10 years ago so she didn't have to jump through all the hoops the rest of us have to do. She didn't need to have all the pre reqs done....WITH A's MIND YOU! lol Not anywhere nearly competitive as it has turned into.

So my mom asks "well your cousin ___ got into nursing school and got her BSN at 21 years old..."

Thats where I go "did she work? did she need like a bazillion pre reqs? DID SHE NEED A's IN EVERY PRE REQ? Was it deathly competitive where there is 1000's of applicants for 50 spots?"

Then that is when she shuts up :D

No I love my mom but sometimes I swear she needs to step into my reality...

I swear I should tell people I just might apply to med schools its almost taking the same amount of time!

where i live its still 100% possible to end up with a bsn at 21 straight out of high school! Its crazy how different things are state to state!
