To everyone that is not able to apply til later this year....
anyone tired of all the pre-reqs?
Argh. Sometimes I wake up and go, "geez I will never be in NS". I mean I kinda just started spring semester of 2011, its the end of the 3rd week. All I can think about is wow, I have about 13 weeks to go.
And after that 13 weeks, I am still not eligible for NS! I still need an important O-chem class I couldn't fit into this semester. They don't offer it in they don't offer it in the summer so I have to wait until this fall to take it. I have 2nd day registration at my school, so no point going somewhere else to take it.
So I don't know. Sometimes I get bummed out because I don't qualify to apply until the beginning of NEXT year.
Thanks to this state (CA) and its budget problems and the economy, a lot of programs shut down their spring admittance. So therefore if your done with everything in fall, you have to wait to get in THE NEXT fall. Ridiculous eh?
I guess I am just venting. Everyone applying and getting accepted its awesome but I look at it and go, dang I have a long way to go STILL. I am applying to BSN programs which do require more than ADN programs but where I live, employers (that are actually hiring...rarely) want BSN over ADNs....sad...
So I guess my question is, is there anyone out there like me?
yep.. the never-ending pre-req battle.i just finished a very interesting read on the nursing education master plan for my state. it talks about the problems coming up for nursing schools and acknowledges that hundreds of qualified applicants are turned away each year due to the shortage of faculty, pre-req class space, clinicals and funding.
here we have the following pre-reqs for "most" adn programs:
chem ( which requires eng 101 and college algebra as a pre-req) and college algebra requires two other math pre-reqs)
bio (majors cellular, which requires eng 101 and chem)
a&p i and i (which requires the bio majors cellular)
communications
eng 101 (which requires placement or another engl pre-req)
a humanities class
nutrition (which has a pre -req of med term)
psych (development, which has a pre-req of intro to psych)
micro (which has the biology pre-reqs)
and you must have at least one of these be a diversity class
(sooo about 14 classes before you can apply for nursing school).. we are on a quarter system at most of the cc's in my state.
a&p ii here is 6.5 credit hours.. the rest are 5 credit hours
i have been attending since last fall and have completed 2 quarters, so i am working on my third quarter:
since last fall i have almost completed my math pre-reqs so i can start taking my sciences.
i have taken an english 101 diversity class, a med term class, and the communication class
i have also taken an applied a&p course and am now taking phlebotomy, psych 100 and college algebra (which is spread out over two quarters)
summer i am taking: the last math i need for the sciences, psych 200 (developmental), and nutrition.
fall: i am taking a learning community, which is chem, bio and engl 102 ( the english 102 is for my bsn requirement)
winter: i am hoping that they will let me take a&p i and ii together.. good luck, i highly doubt they will let you cause they are pre reqs to each other eh?
if the admission says no, get a permission slip form the teachers teaching it, then maybe they let you take'm both, its hard mind you, but i bet you can do it!
spring: micro and cultural anthropology (for my bsn requirement)
summer: statistics (for the bsn)
nice plan!
i am taking:
summer: intro psych and philosophy logic (critical thinking)
fall: ochem/biochem and college algebra
done with pre reqs!!!!
winter intersession: sociology (need it before the last year of bsn programs)
thank god! i have been working on these pre reqs endlessly!
that is all dependent on getting into these classes. in my neck of the woods.. you cannot even hope to get into the sciences or psych classes until you have been attending for at least two quarters.. due to priority registration.
i know what you mean about priority, even attending 2 semester in a row here does not gain any priority whatsoever. i did have someone get into my micro class by her name getting drawed out of hat; 2 spots for 29 add ons for micro lab, not even the lecture....she got lucky
luckily i have been attending for ages now so i have 2nd day priority, technically 1st day since the first 1st day goes to disability students, honors, and athletes.
so basically (when you look below) i will get into the classes i need and therefore will be done in december with pre reqs!!!
also.. our nursing programs vary in pre-reqs and the master plan i was reading wants to address this as well to standardize the programs so that it is a little more streamlined for applicants.
do your schools vary in pre-reqs? is it harder to get into certain pre-reqs so it delays you?
oh heck ya they do, those classes are hard to get into, the non-majors need them for ge purposes, the majors take them for prep for major bio class, then you have all the pre-nursing students take them
that is a lot of people fighting for classes
first, here is the pre reqs to pre reqs
gen bio
gen chem
here is the adn pre reqs
english 101 (freshman comp)
anatomy (pre req gen bio)
physiology (pre req gen chem and gen bio and anatomy)
microbiology (pre req gen bio and gen chem)
intro/developmental psychology (can take either one, no pre req)
nutrition (1 school needs this req while the other adn's dont)
you get more points if you have your done with all your ge stuff like speech, college math, humanities, either anthropology/sociology
now bsn req :
all of the above except nutrition
plus organic chem/biochem hybrid class (one school wants a o-chem class, and the other wants biochem, thank god this class satisfies both)
no one wants developmental psych (lucky for me [ha] that is the one i did)
one school wants intro psych for admissions while the other 2 bsn programs need intro to psych done before their last year of ns
need stats, eventually
upper division critical thinking, now my 3 choices for statisfying this pre req is either
philosophy logic or
debate:argumentation or [nah, i hated public speaking]
upper division english:rhetorical classical essay writing [uck]
i know it is here.. i finally have enough priority due to my large course loads that i get to register pretty early.. after this quarter, i should have pretty good registration times, but there are also a gazillion other students in my school at the same place i am.. and some are much further!
sorry for the long rant...
i know how you feel. i try to rant to everyone about this situation about how all ns's want different pre reqs, even my awesome anatomy and physio teacher, he says ns req's are dumb, they should be uniform and the same.
don't worry it will come faster than you think
i got up this morning, groaned about having to go to work at 430 and though wow.
next week is class, then the week after that is spring break
then after spring break (after easter) is the last week of april
and april flew by!
then all we got is may and june is basically all finals anyway...
It's getting harder & harder to be a student now. CA governor just proposed a huge educational budget cut. Our university is standing to lose about 20% of its annual budget for the year 2011 - 2012. An even bigger budget cut could occur that might lead to 40% funding loss. Other states that are in huge debt might follow suit. As a public school student in CA, this all means tuition will sky-rocket next year, whether you're attending community college, California State University, or University of California. Less students will be admitted into four year schools (both as freshmen & transfer) and less classes will be offered. It will be harder & harder to get into science prerequisite classes like anatomy. Some CA community colleges have reduced the number of students admitted each year into their nursing program. If this continues, 4 year universities might have to follow soon.
Where do you go? CSULB? Are you in their nursing program?
I know, I didn't know about it being 40% and that really sucks.
Especially for all of us who are trying to get into nursing school for the 2011-2012 year.
I know that CSULB did shut down its spring transfers for 2010, but opened up late for transfers in spring 2011. I am applying for fall 2012 at CSULB. With my grades I hope I get in.
But as far as schools in general. Its like there is no jobs, and now there is no point attending school because you can't afford it because you don't have a job or cant get into classes because the school doesn't have the money to offer them.
I am not surprised if many of the cal states, UC's and CCC's shut down admittance into nursing. I just hope somehow, that although, I wish there is no funding loss, that a loss of 20% is better than losing 40%.
Its bad for all students, nursing or not...
I'm a 2nd semester nursing student @ CSULB. Lecture instructors are all pretty good. Clinical instructors seem to change a bit each semester, but most 1st semester clinical instructors seemed pretty cool. If you choose trimester, clinical instructors differs a bit starting in 2nd semester. Expectations seems to be a lot higher for trimester students, comparing to basic. Clinical sites also differ for trimester & basic. Trimester will mostly remain in LBMMC. Basic includes VA near CSULB, St. Mary, Torrance...etc. LBMMC is pretty nice and instructors are actually employed at LBMMC, so they know the hospital very well.
There are no tricks to the application process. It is what it is, purely based on grades and TEAS scores. It really helps if you have high science prereq GPA, since it counts as 40% of your total "application point". But I think as long as your total "application point" is near 9.0 or above, you have a great shot at being accepted. Good luck!
I think I'm the opposite, I'm going part time and I just started taking my pre-reqs and was thinking that it is amazing that I'll be able to apply to nursing programs in less than 2 years. It seems like that is no time at all. Of course I don't know how I'll feel a year from now when I'm in one of my last pre-reqs.
