Anybody else hear about the "TikTok Nurse Abstinence" drama? Apparently a 'nurse influencer' with a lot of followers made a statement that abstinence until marriage is the best way to prevent STDs, and the internet had a meltdown.
I frankly don't really care, but I'm more concerned about the internet reaction belittling 'TikTok Nurses' as a whole. As the 'most trusted profession 18 years running,' it's a little unsettling that people think these 'nurse influencers' are total morons. Seems like bad PR for the profession as a whole, especially when you consider how often nursing is misunderstood by the population at large (aka not the 'mindless medical servants' seen on most TV medical dramas).

Never heard of her but I was able to look at a few of her TikTok videos. I feel that her video on abstinence was more geared to her Christian followers than actually trying to giving solid medical advice. While don’t think that is the best advice to give, I definitely don’t think that she deserved a lot of the nasty comments that were directed toward her. I don’t have much control on how the majority of the population views nurses but I can single-handedly affect the way my patients and family members view nurses by providing quality care; being knowledgeable and professional; having empathy; good communication skills and so on.

Anybody that puts themselves out there, on any social media, is going to get reactions, positive and negative. Everyone is divided about everything these days, so I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it.

She should have added "and practicing mutual monogamy" to that clip and it would have been more credible. Waiting until you get married doesn't save you from an STD. Sadly, spouses have been known to cheat.

I thought TikTok was for young teen girls, at least that's what my son's told me.

What the heck is a nurse influencer? And what is TikTok? People seriously need to get a grip If this is causing them drama.

Meh, I've never cared about the whole "most trusted profession" thing. Particularly now that there are a billion social media platforms and people from every profession on every corner of the earth making asses of themselves, I don't think there's a way to hold any profession sacrosanct. And if you think nursing in general is misrepresented in the media, try being a midwife ?. That's just the way the world works now, and there's nothing we can do about it. Stupid is the new normal.

She wanted attention, and she got attention. What's the problem?

"Influencer" is a buzz word of the millennials to designate someone that has a lot of followers on various social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, that they influence to a certain point of view. An example of an influencer would be Gwenth Pawltrow, and her quackery advice her gives her social media followers.
TikTok has about a billion downloads and is a social media app used mostly by tweens and teens, but people like Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez have gotten on the bandwagon. It's huge and has made celebrities out of some users. It's particularly influential in the music industry.
I'm 60 and even I know this. LOL
There's also a couple of other nurses getting bad press for TikTok vids. One was making fun of an 20 something year old ER patient with chest pain, hinting that she uses cocaine. Another was making fun of a patient faking shortness of breath.
Nurses like this do indeed demean the profession.
As far as nurses preaching abstinence, I think this is a poor practice and is pushing what are your religious views on the public and that's not what we do.

I couldn't agree more. I feel guilty about visiting All nurses to much. I should make more productive use of my time.
I don't feel so bad when reading about crazier time wasting sites people visit.
