The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

One has nothing to do with the other. Both things van be true at the same time.  The market isn't the economy and organizations and go fund me sites are fundraising for diapers.  I don't understand why people who can't afford diapers are having kids but this seems to be a new low in terms of poverty when people can't afford diapers.

You seem to have lost track of the conversation.

Anyway, diaper drives are not new.  So whatever website or talking head got you to believe that diaper drives are a sign of a new low in terms of poverty is playing it's audience for suckers. 🙄

GoFundMe is just another way for them to raise funds like other social media sites.  It's 2025 and it's how things are done these days.

I've always been a bit dismayed that people have to restort to GoFundMe for essentials particularly healthcare.  But so many people are on the edge that if they break a leg and can't work for a few months they fall into hard times and can't pay their bills.

Google AI says poverty rates are increasing mainly because of higher housing costs and inflation, but I don't think at horrible rates.  The poverty rate seems to have been static over time going up and down.

Time will tell how the upward distribution of wealth our government is conducting will have on the poor.  I heard one congressman say they will just have to get jobs.

There is no such thing as a "distribution of wealth".  The beautiful thing about capitalism is you get to choose how much wealth you accumulate.  In fact the top earners in America are currently punished with an unfair financially bigoted progressive tax system.  I paid $66,000 in income taxes in 2024 and am on track to pay $75k+ this as a Psych NP/aesthetics/online instructor with an independent practice.  The opportunity is out there

Many of us are born into a certain class.  It is one of the great things about capitalism and the US that there are hundreds of thousands of cases of people rising out of poverty to great wealth.

I'm not speaking of lack of opportunity (although some have the odds stacked against them).  This article sums up what I'm thinking.

House Republicans worked through the night to advance a massive piece of legislation that might, if enacted, carry out the largest upward transfer of wealth in American history.

That is not a side effect of the legislation, but its central purpose. The "big, beautiful bill" would pair huge cuts to food assistance and health insurance for low-income Americans with even larger tax cuts for affluent ones.

Someone finally admitted it!

The. Bulwark is a YouTube channel run by white, moderately conservative, never-trump Republican men (with one white lesbian for color) who focus on political commentary. On today's episode of Pod Save America, one of the hosts actually said the quiet part out loud: that the destruction of higher education in America is a long term conservative goal.

I would widen that to include free public school education entirely, but maybe that's a different discussion.

Florida has been ranked #1 in education 9 years in a row and is a solid red state.  If anyone is trying to destroy education in America, it is modern day democrats.  Reducing standards, pushing racist policies like affirmative action, encouraging violence against teachers, etc.  The wealthiest Americans vote red for a reason....

The Bulwark and Pod Save America aren't the same people.

What host, specifically,  said what you are claiming he said?  What was the reason given that destruction of higher education is a conservative goal?

I'm having difficulty locating this discussion.

What was on Pod Save America today was a discussion with the authors of "Original Sin".  Did you listen to that?

Making money is no reason not to pay taxes.  The top bracket was 80% during Eisenhower and it's steadily dropped to 37% so you are getting a good deal and you shoukd be paying more.  You are obviously a go-getter but most of us aren't and don't want to go down that road.  Oh, in response to Trump never abusing  a teen; I believe that he abused this one by calling her "hot" to the public right in front if her. Thus photo is very cringe.  Ivanka was 14 .  Note what the parrots are doing.  Screenshot_20180610-211154.thumb.png.568e36d372e6e1c29b81ffcdb44252f8.png

Maybe it's not important but I wasn't referring to Go Fund Me but rather to organizations that have sprung up to specifically provide diapers.  If this doesn't says poverty, what does?  I know that the food pantries in my city are all claiming to be busier than ever.  I might have been cut off reality when I lived in NYC and the immediate burbs but in my 11 years in Michigan, things got much worst for folks during Covid because the tourist economy isn't as resilient as a tech center like NYC.  I don't think we need more time to observe what happens when regressive policies are put in place.  We are living it.

Yes, they are, pretty much: mostly the same hosts, same political ideology. All that's missing is John Favraux. Search "The GOP Is Losing It". Mentioned in the first half. (Second half discusses the Tapper book.) Posted 8hours age as of this writing. (6am-ish Mountain Standard Time)

ETA going back, you're right. My only excuse for the mistaken attribution is that upscale whitebois all look alike to me.

The hosts are John Favreau and Dan Pfeifer. They doen't seem to be the "never-Trump Republican men" that you described.

"Pod Save America is a no-*** conversation about politics hosted by former Obama aides Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor."
