QuoteThe abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood. I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.
Meanwhile, Trump Republicans in the House are planning to change the age of dependents that would exempt the mother from working outside of the home from under 18 years to under 8 years.

Single mom of one, here. Luckily, I already had my nursing license so I was able to ditch public assistance by the time my kid was 3 months old. I guess we need someone to replace all those deported workers. Next step: Victorian-style workhouses.
The "party of Lincoln" morphed into the party of Scrooge decades ago. The mean girl faction of conservatism was born in the Nixon administration and got on top of the pile with the reign of Reagan. It's has been flogging Rove's durable Republican majority ever since.
Pro-life my foot.

QuoteWe estimate the tax provisions would reduce federal revenues by $4.1 trillion between 2025 and 2034. Most of the revenue reduction comes after 2025, when the major provisions of the TCJA are scheduled to sunset. On a dynamic basis, incorporating the projected increase in long-run GDP of 0.6 percent, the revenue loss falls by 19 percent to $3.3 trillion over the 10-year budget window. We provide a detailed revenue table available for download.
Are Republicans going to try to offset that deficit on the backs of the poorest and most vulnerable Americans?

Probably. It's nothing new. It's how we create wealth and who wouldn't want more of that?
It kills a multitude of birds with one stone. It'll further decimate the public school system, for one thing (long story). It might also tend to accelerate the growth of the underclass. Just think - more available very cheap labor - the Gilded Age 2.0! The possibilities are endless. Next step: lock down resources.
Then there's all those tax dollars that could come up for grabs! How do you think trump's father got the seed money that kickstarted his fortune? Building houses for veterans of WW2. At taxpayer's expense. Cui bono?
We live in a kleptocracy. If doesn't pass this time it could catch on enough to become a permanent part of the various conservatives' respective agendas.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
It'll be interesting to see if our governor saves his party from itself.
"Uber and Lyft are putting pressure on Democratic Gov. Jared Polis to veto House Bill 1291. The bill aims to improve safety for rideshare passengers, but the companies complain it would add costly, vague and unworkable burdens without achieving its goals.
Uber continues to say it will stop operating in Colorado if the bill becomes law. Lyft has not gone quite that far, but said the bill harms those it seeks to protect and would leave "the future of Lyft's operations in Colorado uncertain.”

QuoteMoody's Ratings downgraded the United States' debt on Friday, stripping the country of its last perfect credit rating. The move could rattle financial markets and push up interest rates, potentially creating an additional financial burden for Americans already struggling with tariffs and inflation.
Of the three major credit rating agencies, Moody's was the lone holdout, maintaining its outstanding rating of AAA for US debt. Moody's held a perfect credit rating for the United States since 1917.
Is this winning or is this Biden's fault?

It's Pete Buttigieg and his bicycle's fault.
This thread started with an article about abortion.
QuoteATLANTA (AP) — A pregnant woman in Georgia who was declared brain dead after a medical emergency has been on life support for three months to let the fetus grow enough to be delivered, a move her family says a hospital told them was required under the state's strict anti-abortion law.
With her due date still more than three months away, it could be one of the longest such pregnancies. Her family is upset that Georgia's law that restricts abortion once cardiac activity is detected doesn't allow relatives to have a say in whether a pregnant woman is kept on life support.
Georgia's so-called "heartbeat law" is among the restrictive abortion statutes that have been put in place in many conservative states since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade three years ago.
Will the state pay the bills for the daughter's care? Will the state pay the cost of the child's care?
The family should sue the health system that ignored her symptoms and sent her home to die.

She was nine weeks pregnant when she died. The cost is going to probably be millions, but also the baby isn't thought to be viable and may die when born due to a brain condition, but if survives will need NICU care and possible care for life further adding to the families agony.

There doesn't seem to be any evidence that the state cares about what is best for the family who lives in the state or any potential emotional, mental, or financial burden that they might bear.

You are exactly correct. We know from the whole "stop the steal" baloney that the agenda of Fox News reporting has little relevance to responsible journalism or truth telling. It was proven, in court, that the network deliberately fed their audience known lies, fabrications, and falsehoods for a Trump agenda. Ignoring that, millions of Americans continue to believe that they are getting balanced and fair reporting to the degree that they rely nearly exclusively upon FOX for their information.
This is what indoctrination does. That's the purpose. It has people talking about things irrelevant to the current political leadership or the actions which are affecting daily life in this country. It has them chasing shiny things down right-wing rabbit holes so that the fascists can destroy their federal government in plain view. It has conservative Americans talking about Biden's cognitive health while their current feeble but transactional president is making close friendships with the country that funds Hamas and was so kind to Osama Bin Laden.
