The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

I guess making a big deal out of a lab leak origin story for the virus will make people forget that Trump was completely ineffective in crisis leadership during a public health emergency.  Maybe we will all forget that Trump was the largest source of misinformation and public confusion about COVID and how to best reduce its spread.  Or maybe we will forget how his administration created one of the most corrupt processes for distributing federal assistance.  $280 million is thought to have been stolen by fraudsters from those Trump efforts.

We will never know the origin.  Another will come and 2020 will be moved to be back burner.

I  4,000 people showed in my little city of about 18,000.  The city is surrounded by water on 3 sides and there is no where to build but up.  As a result we have much more heavily populated townships who favor Republican but 4,000 people are still 4% of the entire county and it was a freezing, gray day,  Regardless of the actual numbers, it was the largest protest march in American history.

It appears that your newspapers don't cover the national news.  Even my little bitty daily paper has a national section.

Actually, it was the websites of local NBC, ABC, and Fox affiliates. Only one of the three had it.

Was it the national section of your little bitty daily paper that led you to believe "it was the largest protest march in American history."?

I don't hold Trump responsible for the fraudsters.  It spilled over the to Biden administration.  Again, it's like digging up bones, but I suppose we have to learn from our mistakes.

Florida is going to be Ground Zero in economic consequences for the fallout with Canada.  Not sure if this article is viewable or not.

If our state were a business, Canada would be among our best customers. Canadians represent around a quarter of the international travelers to our state. As many as half a million own homes here. Add to that: Florida is home to roughly 500 Canadian-owned companies that employ 51,000 Floridians, and Canada is our state's largest export market, buying over $5 billion in goods from us every year.

Trump himself was the largest individual source of misinformation about COVID in 2020. Social media platforms silenced his accounts because of the toxic influence of those lies.

Trump is a fraudster.

I read this morning that while Canadian travel to Florida is down, that the Florida housing market is going to experience a significant adjustment and prices are going to drop markedly.  That means that those Canadians owning homes in Florida better hope that theirs sell quickly.

What are you hearing?

I'm not hearing much yet but anecdotal.  Our market for condos is flooded with people selling due to high insurance costs and unloading flood damaged condos to investors and Canadians attempting to sell their condos would make a saturated market even worse.  I've seen interviews with real estate agents in the Miami area saying there's a rise in Canadians wanting to sell their condos there.

I have also read that flights between Tampa and Canada are down 12% and we have some direct flights.  While this might not be a huge number, I think it's a bad sign especially given that snowbird season as ended and flights typically slow down.  Next fall/Winter will tell a bigger story.

The governor recently put out some stats that tourism set a record last year.  Hopefully domestic tourists will be able to uphold a possible drop in international tourists.

Speaking of the Governor.  A charity overseen by his wife is hot water and republicans are leading the case against it.  So far he and his wife haven't been implicated in any wrong doing though.

The $10 million that Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration diverted to a state-created charity last year consisted of Medicaid dollars owed to state and federal taxpayers, contrary to what the governor and other officials have publicly asserted.

I noticed the article mentions $ billions in fraud, and the member posting the article attributes $280 million to Trump.  That would indicate fraud under Biden dwarfs that of Trump.

Most of the looted money was swiped from three large pandemic-relief initiatives launched during the Trump administration and inherited by President Joe Biden. Those programs were designed to help small businesses and unemployed workers survive the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic.

Quote

An Associated Press analysis found that fraudsters potentially stole more than $280 billion in COVID-19 relief funding; another $123 billion was wasted or misspent. Combined, the loss represents 10% of the $4.2 trillion the U.S. government has so far disbursed in COVID relief aid.

I made a typo.  Billions not millions.

Quote

How could so much be stolen? Investigators and outside experts say the government, in seeking to quickly spend trillions in relief aid, conducted too little oversight during the pandemic's early stages and instituted too few restrictions on applicants. In short, they say, the grift was just way too easy.

The article doesn't imply that Biden might have been responsible for most of the waste or fraud in the COVID relief.
