QuoteThe abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood. I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

QuoteThe National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg is now a casualty of the Trump administration's funding freezes and staffing cuts.
Over the weekend, the Federal Emergency Management Agency canceled all classes until further notice.
QuoteThe Fire Training Academy, a large employer, could have a devastating impact on the town's economy as a result of its closure.
Word came through an email that all classes were canceled, and notice was given only on a day's notice.
"This is the fire service's war college. This is where the fire service comes to get that high level of executive leadership, critical incident management that we cannot provide at the local or state level," said Ken Willette, executive director of North American Fire Training Directors.
Quote"It would have a devastating impact on the town," said Emmitsburg Mayor Frank Davis. "We have a large number of citizens that work there."
Davis said canceling classes could also mean some shops could lose up to 30% of their business.
"It keeps the town very, very busy. You can tell when they are closed," Davis said.
The billionaires warned us that we would suffer a bit so that they could achieve their goals.

Long term effects that are unknown vs low risk of me getting sick from covid. Add to that I've tested positive twice, most recently a year ago, and have been exposed countless of time while working in the ER, did several hundred nasal swabs, was part of vaccine clinics that gave thousands of shots, and I never really isolated during the pandemic. I'll count on my immune system and pass on more shots, for now. My answer may be different in the future.
The other vaccines you mention have a lot more history behind them, and work in a different manner. Not a apples to apples comparison.
subee said:Yale has released no such study. That's just for starters. Yale will not comment on this "study." If you read it what the methadology is, it relies on self-reporting from Covid patients. Now, I had Covid twice. The 2nd time was a breeze but I noticed an almost immediate decrease in my FEV1 which has lasted for almost 2 years. Is this long Covid or is it a scheduled side effect of getting older? I am led to believe that it was Covid because the change was so abrupt despite the acute phase being nothing more than a mild cold, Now, how is a layman supposed to answer complex questions when they don't even have the skill sets to think about what's important and what isn't? And the relationship of those symptoms to Covid, long Covid or normal aging? I'm not sure this study will ever be released but Alex told a big lie when he said it was. He's a known liar from years back now. He lost his job for it. I will continue to get boosters since I've already had a taste of what an easy bout has wrought.
Well, here is what Yale says related to what the article is about.
Seems to line up with what he is saying.
I don't see anything that indicates that guy was ever fired fron the NY Times.

I think too the virus has lost its punch. The overwhelming majority of people are not boosted and we are not overwhelmed anymore with covid and people are out living their lives without masks or social distancing. These are different times than 2021. Like I said, I'll have my annual conversation about it and likely decided against it like the last two years I decided against it but then thought what the heck while I was getting the flu shot to get it. I don't get the RSV or Pneumonia vaccine (which today my doctor offered because of my age, but didn't bat an eye when I declined). But I have tetanus and shingles. It gets a bit much.
Off topic. I heard over and over again people concerns about the long-term effects of the covid vaccine. But millions of people are taking GLP-1's with known worse side effects and unknown future side effects, but some long-term side effects like renal failure, thyroid issues and pancreatitis, and I'm barely hearing a peep. Interesting times.

Many good points!

No comparison. Navahos can live wherever they want . They are generally considered to be citizens of the US for all practical persons. After that they are legal residents of their chosen tribal land. They are still subject to rules and regulations of the US as a wnole. The Gazans, on the other hand, are comprised of bedouin tribes who never had citizenship in any particular country. Theoretically, I am not against the possibility of a real Palestinian state but I doubt that Israel will ever allow them to live next to them.....right or wrong.

Okay, I'm not going to split hairs about people calling themselves Palestinians and the legitimacy of them doing so.
Nonetheless the man holds a green card and it's being revoked because he protested. I'm bothered by that and whether or not he's a Palestinian or part of a loose group of Bedouins doesn't matter.

What makes you think that I don't agree with you on this? I do. It's not right to send this guy back. I thought he had even more status than a green card. The word "Palestinian" should be parsed. I used to think that they should have been granted statehood with their on designated nationality but after Oct 7, I deleted that sentiment from my brain. They still haven't released all the hostages.

"She's on a Scholarship at a Tribal College in Wisconsin. The Trump Administration Suspended the USDA Grant That Funded It."
QuoteMany staff and students at the country's 37 tribal colleges and universities, which rely heavily on federal dollars, have been alarmed by the suspension of crucial grants early in Donald Trump's second presidency.
Even before he retook office, the schools essentially lived paycheck to paycheck. A 1978 law promised them a basic funding level, but Congress hasn't come close to fulfilling that obligation in decades. Today, the colleges get a quarter-billion dollars less per year than they should, when accounting for inflation, and receive almost nothing to build and maintain their campuses. Water pipes break frequently, roofs leak, ventilation systems fail and buildings crumble. Other than minuscule amounts of state funding in some cases and a smattering of private donations, tribal colleges that lose any federal funding have few other sources of income.
"You freeze our funding and ask us to wait six months to see how it shakes out, and we close,” said Ahniwake Rose, president of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, which lobbies for tribal colleges in Washington, D.C. "That's incredibly concerning.”
Educating Americans is not a priority for the billionaire bullies.

QuoteVeterans joining the march intend to peacefully protest the Trump administration's proposed cuts to Social Security, federal job losses for veterans, the pardon of January 6 rioters, and reductions in veterans' healthcare services.
QuoteWhen individuals join the armed forces or take an oath of office as a politician, they swear to protect the U.S. Constitution from "all enemies, foreign and domestic." The participants of this march see it as their responsibility to speak out against what they perceive as unconstitutional actions by the Trump administration.
QuoteThe march is deliberately scheduled for March 14, as Section 3 of the 14th Amendment addresses insurrectionists.
The 14th Amendment states: "No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may, by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability."
There are apparently lots of people who will join and support the veterans in protest on DC and in cities across the country.

It still won't make sense. Intellectually I know you are right but as a Columbia grad, it made me sick that these demonstrations were allowed on campus. My only recourse is to drop them out of my will and transfer that to the local junior college. The police should have been called in immediately. It's scary knowing that a fellow student walking next to you wouldn't mind if you dropped dead in front of them just because you are an American Jew. But, in the end you are right. However, just so you know, there is no such thing as a Palestinian. There is no Palestinian passport. They are an amalgam of stateless Arabs that no other country wants because of their relationship to terrorism. Do I personally think they should have a state? I think it's probably the only solution OR they could just leave and slowly leak into other countries that will take them. Let THEM have a disapora for a while and see what it is like to be chased out of your own country. Arresting innocent people will continue as over-zealous ICE agents rush into schools, hospitals, etc. What would one expect with ICE Barbie in charge creating photo ops of her fresh face lift and bullet proof vest? Netanyahu should be in prison like Hamas.
