QuoteThe abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood. I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

The policy was updated this morning at 10:39 AM, to say that Maine parents could continue to register newborns at the hospital.
Yet another example of this administration's work flow of fire, ready, aim.
Is this a tiny step in making birthright citizenship an arbitrary decision made by representatives of the fascists in charge?
Let's talk about the Trump corruption.
toomuchbaloney said:Funny. Fox had to pay $780 million dollars for lying about a specific company while lying to the American people about voter fraud in order to benefit Trump. You still use that lying network as a source. Should we measure the lies by how much they cost the company? If so, Fox is the much bigger liar while also being very very popular among Trump supporters. There are so many right wing liars; Lindell, Tucker Carlson, Hannity, Giuliani, Trump, Vance, Alex Jones, George Santos, Habba, Hegseth, Gabbard. It's a veritable parade of dishonesty and misinformation.
These "conservative" liars are intentional and consistent in their dishonesty with the American people. Dishonesty is the standard in the era of Trump.
Trump using the child as a political prop while cancer research funding is currently halted IS disgusting.
My daughter's team and their research into glioblastoma has definitely been adversely affected by Musk's word search management style, regardless of what you believe.
Re: Maddow - clearly there continues to be confusion about the difference between news and commentary. Back when I still had cable, I watched her show regularly and never heard her claim to be reporting the news. Since she has the good sense to pretty much agree with me, I have to acknowledge my bias, which is u I real and inevitable since we all have presumably human minds. Her value to me is her ability to embed the news in its historical context. Her commentary on the history of nazism in the US had been really illuminating. If a person is aware that she's been telling the Lundeen story for years, they must have made a decision to be ignorant, rather than being simply stupid.
To reiterate: nazism, thanks to free speech protections, has been endemic in the US for almost a century (at least 90 years if we count from 1935). Trump has been playing footsie with domestic nazis at least since his first presidential campaign. It's integral to his hero worship of dictators - the more brutal the better. In his dealings with Ukraine, he's taken a page straight out of domestic nazi history. He's never had an original thought in his life.
I wonder what's next. He's already made a start on ethnic cleansing. Maybe forced labor by children to replace the undocumented labor in agriculture, construction, and so on? After all, with the Department of Education gone, only the wealthy will be able to educate their children well. Especially with their taxpayer funded coupons for private school education.
So, yeah - you can blow off the Lundeen story if you like. But are you willing to repeat history?

Doesn't uncertainty always hurt the economy?
I was certain Trump was going to wreck the economy again so bought my car last year. I'm not usually that smart:(

Exactly right.
Trump supporters simply think that they can defend Trump's lies and the lies of his propagandists by attacking someone else. They are willing to repeat history. As we can see from the evidence that they provide.

Well, since I'm not in fear of ethnic cleansing taking place, or that we're going to become a country that accepts child labor, and that I have a understanding of what the Dept of Education actually does and doesn't do, I am pretty comfortable blowing off Rachel Maddow's Lundeen comparisons.

Would you like to ask a question so that I can clear up any confusion that you are experiencing?
I do know that 100s of millions of dollars is invested worldwide into glioblastoma research. So, when someone says that a some nameless entity is adversely affected by Musk, without any other context or details, I am confused as to why I should be alarmed. It's likely that the quality of work being done by this group just doesn't stack up well against what others are doing.

Doesn't make sense but they aren't offering a reason. It also doesn't say they have to bring their newborns there immediately after birth. Most likely they can wait.
I can't remember when I got a SSI number but I was already school age, maybe past ten and didn't need it until I got my first job.
Edit, In diving deeper apparently some health insurance policies require it, so I guess that's why they get it so young. The SSI's website is saying they've made it easy by allowing parents to register in the hospital. So it's a Maine thing, but they aren't saying why,

My big issue is that it doesn't seem like Musk is taking the time to investigate and he's just making slashing cuts. He's also "misleading" (I.e. lying)
I'm 100% sure that you throw money and fund organizations there is going to be some mismanagement. To me it would be prudent to send teams there to hold them accountable, see what they are doing and go from there with the idea that you're going to cut. This happened where I worked in the 90's. A group came in, and eventually laid a bunch of people off they felt whose jobs and roles weren't needed or could be absorbed elsewhere.
Also, this needs to be done legally and obligations need to be honored. Also the cabinet heads of that have been appointed need to be consulted.

I will say its pretty easy to slash in the beginning. Im sure you go to work everyday and see things your employer wastes money on. Although, there are times it seems haphazardly being done by DOGE.
Overall, I agree with what you're saying and do have some concerns myself about how things are being done. They've done some things that when it all comes out in the wash will be good for America. And, they've made some missteps for sure.
Being a results oriented person, I'm mostly in wait and see mode.
My mom yesterday got a ballot in the mail for some local run off or something. She hates Musk and Trump...we don't talk politics much. When wondered aloud what it was, I said it was her special election ballot. "What?", she said. "You know, for Associate President...only one candidate on the ballot though." I had her thinking about it for a few seconds....LOL

The NCI is the largest source of funding for cancer research in the world. Musk put all of that funding on hold. Musk capped the indirect costs of that research at 15% and that adversely affected research teams. Did that clear up your confusion? I don't need it wasn't you to feel alarmed, just better informed.
I'm laughing that you think that the work done at the University of Michigan doesn't "stack up well". Would you like to read what they published last year?
