The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

Last year, $10 million in taxpayer money was spent creating transgender animals, a study by the White Coat Waste Project revealed.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., laid out the misuse of taxpayer money funding "gender-affirming care" for animals during opening remarks at a subcommittee hearing Thursday. The hearing, "Transgender Lab Rats and Poisoned Puppies: Oversight of Taxpayer Funded Animal Cruelty," featured a witness from the White Coat Waste Project.

"Last year, the White Coat Waste Project exposed more than $10 million in taxpayer funds that were spent creating transgender mice, rats and monkeys," Mace said. "These DEI grants funded painful and deadly transgender experiments that forced lab animals to undergo invasive surgeries and hormone therapies at universities across the country."

OMG. These people are our political leaders? Really?

Meanwhile, studies into the nature and causes of transgendered organisms are very dangerous. Stopping them and suppressing the data allows the cis-gender bigots among us to say anything they want. Kinda like they do in discussions about abortion (I.e. "Nature has a way of taking care of these things", meaning pregnancies resulting from rape. Cf. any "information" from crisis pregnancy centers.)

Our right wing extremists have access to a well developed propaganda apparatus that will repeat their "concerns" over and over as if they are founded on reality rather than expose their flawed thinking and logic to the public.  Like that Fox article.  It simply repeated Mace's nonsense as if it was worth something.

The best way to address the nonsense is with a really good fact check. Kinda hard when we're not allowed to actually discover the facts. Why do you think that trump wanted to stop Covid testing?

Wall Street's sell-off kicked back into gear on Thursday, and a U.S. stock market rattled by the whiplash created by President Donald Trump's tariffs and uncertainty about the economy fell sharply.

Quote

"These exemptions don't do much to resolve the general air of uncertainty,” said Yung-Yu Ma, chief investment officer at BMO Wealth Management. "Businesses will still be cautious in the current environment until a lot more of the tariff picture is clear.”

U.S. businesses are already saying they're confronting "chaos" because of all the uncertainty coming out of Washington. while U.S. households are bracing for higher inflation because of the tariffs, which is sapping their confidence.

"Much will depend on whether these new tariffs prove temporary or are toned down,” according to strategists at BNP Paribas. "But even if they are ultimately removed, we anticipate lasting damage to global economic activity.”

Doesn't uncertainty always hurt the economy?

Possibly, but "Google" has long been the generic term for "do an internet search". I stopped using it when it came out that their search results were skewed to reflect my previous responses and search terms. Kinda like social media algorithms that way.

I've used DuckDuckGo for years. Those who clutch their pearls over Maddow are unlikely to click on any mention of her work in search results. That's why I suggested the actual historical reference she used.

For those who get the vapors at the thought of a really smart AND well-educated female (and a dyke at that!) here's the story.  Mr. Lundeen served in the US senate in 1940 at the beginning of the Battle of Britain. He vehemently opposed sending any aid to Britain in their defense against invasion by Nazi Germany, not withstanding the fact that Britain was the last European country not occupied by the German army.  He suggested that Britain give us significant amounts of their territory to pay their debts from WW1 instead. (Sound familiar?) After his death, it was discovered that Lundeen was paid by the Nazi propaganda machine.

Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Yeah, Maddow has been making the Lundeen comparison for a few years now.  She keeps throwing it out there hoping it will stick.  I hope she keeps it up.

I agree she is really smart and educated.  Which makes her transgressions even worse as she is well aware of the lies she tells as opposed to just being ignorant.  She recently cost her employer $30 million to settle a defamation suit.  And the other night called Trump's spotlight on the young cancer survivor "disgusting" and then lied about it happening while he (Trump) was praising DOGE and lied about Trump cutting off funds for pediatric cancer research.

Funny.  Fox had to pay $780 million dollars for lying about a specific company while lying to the American people about voter fraud in order to benefit Trump.  You still use that lying network as a source.  Should we measure the lies by how much they cost the company?  If so, Fox is the much bigger liar while also being very very popular among Trump supporters.  There are so many right wing liars; Lindell, Tucker Carlson, Hannity, Giuliani, Trump, Vance, Alex Jones, George Santos, Habba, Hegseth, Gabbard. It's a veritable parade of dishonesty and misinformation.

These "conservative" liars are intentional and consistent in their dishonesty with the American people.  Dishonesty is the standard in the era of Trump.

Trump using the child as a political prop while cancer research funding is currently halted IS disgusting.

Another measles death. It's probably just as well that the new Secretary of HHS is off hiking instead of working.

Almost all of the cases are in unvaccinated individuals or individuals whose vaccination status is unknown, with 80 unvaccinated and 74 of unknown status. At least 22 people have been hospitalized so far, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Children and teenagers between ages 5 and 17 make up the majority of cases with 74, followed by 53 cases among children ages 4 and under.

The CDC has separately confirmed 164 cases in nine states so far this year in Alaska, California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Texas.

The total, however, is an undercount due to delays in reporting from states to the federal government.

We know from experience not to expect timely or accurate reports from Trump's CDC, right?
