Things that make me grumpy

A line up of things that should have been addressed at home (bumped arm at soccer, of course never iced it. Cut finger last night -not bleeding now) that need to be addressed before I even walk in the door.

Kids that walk in interrupting and yelling loudly about minor complaints while I'm on the phone - i simply assume that they are allowed to do this at home all the time.

Student's coming for minor complaint type things (lip balm, Lumbiderm) 5 minutes before lunch) - really. you couldn't wait?

Parents that never return paperwork, vaccines, whatever then get mad at you when you all them out on it.

Students rushing in 5 minutes past the dismissal bell with sports forms that they had ALL DAY to turn in.

What makes you grumpy???:cautious:

Kids don't know how to use the phone.

They can't use a NON smart phone. A. Regular. Phone.

I have to show high school students. How to use the phone. To call their Moms. Who are waiting at home. To pick them up for. Their FAKE ILLNESSES!!!

Gahhhhhhh!!!

Hahahahaha! I know! I literally had a kid the other day who held the receiver upside down to his ear. They're all confused about not hitting "send". I try to remind myself that this is not their fault. They may literally have never encountered a landline. Many of their parents have only had a cell phone for their entire lives.

Shamefacedly, my kids only recently saw a landline phone. It did have buttons, though, and not a rotary. (Like I did growing up.) I always thought it was fun to move the dial and listen to the clickety clack rolling back.

So I left the insanity of my old school and took a maternity leave position at a school half the size. Most days it's a picnic (compared to the old school) but it still has it's share of special snowflakes.

Today I was asked, "When is the real nurse coming back?"

I'm not a real nurse? Better tell the NJ BON.

On Tuesday I had 3 kids come down from the same class. They all seemed to have the same symptoms. "My stomach hurts." "Mine too!" "And mine!"

Sure, sure! Temp checks and crackers for everyone!

I've been there for 4 weeks I've seen the same kid 20 times already (no joke). She comes down multiple times a day with a headache, stomachache, nausea, etc. Today her eye hurt. I've spoken to mom but the teacher just keeps sending her.... Already learning to work the system in 2nd grade.

i'd talk to the teacher too - i wonder if she is actually supposed to be coming to you all those times or has asked to use the bathroom / fountain, etc then wandered to your office

I had a student that came to me multiple times a day, to the point that I was jokingly scheduling an appointment. Come to find out she was being made uncomfortable by a girl I had heard this complaint about from other students. This wouldn't have been found if I didn't call mom and talk to administrators about the issue. This has been going on for 40 days, poor girl.

Yah,there is something bigger going on here....

Mine is teachers and parents who try to tell me how to do my job. "You should really..." or "Maybe they just need..." or "When that happened to me when I was a kid..." or "I wouldn't do that, I would...", Seriously? This is my job, I went to school for this fancy degree and they even pay me to do this. I got it. Now, could you just turn around and leave the same way you came in? It's just been one of those kid of weeks here! UGH.

I love throwing around the word evidence based practice when they start that. I love to point out when they are way off too. "No, we don't put butter and ice on a burn!"

Yep, I agree - something is going on. It's a tough situation since I'm a sub. I don't want to butt heads with a teacher who sends me a lot of kids each day. This morning, this student came in at 9:10am along with another student from the class. School starts at 9:05. Both c/o a sore throat. I sent them back with a note telling the teacher I needed 20 minutes to get attendance done (no blackboard robocalls so I have to call all students whose parents have not reported their absence). I send the counselor an email the other day asking if she was aware of any food insecurities in the house. I haven't heard back. Every time the student c/o a bellyache, she says she only had a piece of cheese that morning. But mom said she eats more than a grown man at each meal. Next week is a 3 day week so I'm sure I will have more patience!!!

Today's grumpiness: student who came down 3 times with a wiggly tooth. Each time I let him sit x5 min to try to wiggle it out before sending him back.

Yes, yes, yes to all of the above!

And this one just came in:

Nurse pass reads "Mouth hurts really bad. Dad is dentist - he said they couldn't do anything"

Student tells us that her father who is a dentist said there is nothing there and he can't do anything for her.....

Ummmm...... so they send her to the nurse. Okey dokey!
