There won't be any raises this year

Published

My sister & I are both nurses in different areas of practice at different hospitals in different communities, but both of our hospitals have told us that the staff will not get raises. Is anyone one experiening this at their hospitals? I've only been a nurse for a year now sp this would have been my first raise, but I won't be getting one at all now. There is a lot of frustration at my hospital over it. Recently, over a million dollars was spent to upgrade the orthopedic unit including all single rooms, flat panel TVs, a family room with cappicino machine and granite countertops through out the unit. They've also recently revamped out court yard; ripping out existing trees & putting more benches and lamdscaping. My coworkers are angry because the is money in the budget for those things, but not to give the nurse who work so very hard a cost of living increase. Any thoughts on this subject? Anyone with similar things happening?

Shame on all of you who are upset about not getting your raise this year.

1. You should be thankful you have health benefits.

2. You should be thankful you have a dependable paycheck.

3. You should be thankful you have the chance to make a difference.

4. You should use your energy in support of universal health care.

Yes we all work very hard and under extremely difficult circumstances, however next time you see the flat screen TV's and new furnishings for the hospital, just remember that is someone else's greed and praise to your God that it is not yours to own.

Good fortune will come to those not looking for it. Remember why you became a nurse - I hope it wasn't for the $$

I'll thank anyone NOT to "shame me" (an adult) with my right to get I what I work for.

If I didn't need the money, I'd be a volunteer.

I am NOT a volunteer.

I rely on those raises to keep my head above water.

And I will NOT praise God about ANYONE's greed...

I intend to stay good and wanked off about it!!!

The RNs where I work belong to a very large union. Our hospital HAS to give us raises or they'll know we'll strike. We striked a few years ago because they didn't believe we actually would strike. In the end, we got exactly what we demanded and the hospital lost millions of dollars because they had to staff the entire hospital (a very large hospital) with agency nurses and defer most patients to other institutions. As we have it now: we are among the highest paid in our area (socal is high to begin with, but we are higher than the average), and we get a mandatory of 2 raises per year (which must be a certain percentage of hourly wage - i forgot the value. I think it's something like 4%). Our two raises is the cost of living one (I think that's by law anyway), and then we get a yearly raise after our evaluation. I'm just a simple minded employee, but I think having a union is a GREAT thing. It's like house insurance but for my job. I'd have to REALLY do something stupid to get fired. Otherwise, my job is is safe. My hospital can't even lay off nurses because the union won't let them... it's fantastic! Anytime I or any other nurse feels like we've been an unfair warning or something, we call our union rep who then calls our management and our management magically erases any marks against us. This past month I got a $4 dollar per hour raise when much of the country is getting laid off/reduced hours/demoted/etc, etc, etc! I can not complain! My hourly rate is insanely high for someone with just a 2 year degree. I must say I find it incredible at what I make for only have a 2 year degree. To be honest, I think it's an insult to people with bachelor's and master's degree because they had to work much harder and longer than I had to, and they won't even touch what I'm making. I'm living in a high-end condo that is guard-protected, I have no debt other than what's left of my condo loan, I take expensive vacations to basically anywhere in the world I choose, I bought a brand new $60,000 Mercedes, I haven't cleaned my house since I started working because I hire someone else to do it for me now, and lastly, in my own little world I only work 3 days a week (sometimes more if I feel like it). Other people work several days a week, do back breaking work, make barely enough to buy Frosted Flakes, and have no or crummy health insurance. Here I am, with a TWO YEAR DEGREE, making what I shouldn't be making with only a 2 year degree. It's unfair to everyone else but I'm not going to complain.

All that AND 94 years old

I'm not REALLY 94, lol. I tried putting in 100+ but this website wouldn't let me. That's discriminatory! JK! I'm in my 20s.

I feel sorry for you. Life isn't fair and you need to get over it.

You will never achieve the success or earnings that corporate execs do and your Dr. went to school for at least seven years (you probably did four if I'm being generous).

As for universal health care- go to the UK and speak to a nurse live and direct before you continue to spread false assumptions. No, you won't find one in the slums living in poverty and mad at the world because she can't feed or clothe her children. You'd find one living in comfort with the same problems/concerns you have, but the ONLY difference is that she is not a slave to her employer just to keep her health benefits or 401k.

My advice to you, cut up your too many credit cards, pay down your obscene loans, drive a car you can afford, and shop in a store not for the brand name it carries but for the quality of the item .

Face facts, you're sour because you live beyond your means and think that its someone else's fault. You're no better than the people you're complaining about.

I live in a four-thousand+ square foot home, drive a Porsche, and have money in the bank because I live what I preach.

The solution jhere seems obvious.

Wow talk about judgemental!!! I drive a 2000 dodge dakota with paint peeling off and the cheapest tires I can find on the market. By the way it's paid for! I have one credit card of which I owe nothing one. I dont use my credit although I have good credit. I live in a 2 bedroom home that I rent and grow my own veggies in the backyard lol. I shop at Walmart and occasionally go to Beall's when it's a good sale and shop the clearance racks. By the time I supply all the things that my kids need for school, sports, and college to include health insurance although with my employer, it sucks and doesnt cover alot! Lets consider the dead beat dad that doesnt contribute to any of the college fund or anything else for that matter. Dont forget the wisdom teeth extraction that insurance didnt cover in my oldest son of which I had to pay cash for. Not everyone lives "beyond" thier means. Someone else needs a reality check here not me! By the way I'm not complaining as I love my life as it is but it would be nice to be appreciated by my employer for work well done when I see thier profits climbing, them cutting supplies for pt care and pts suffering for those cuts. I dont get a raise in 3 years due to "budget cuts" but recently watched my administratior go to the Keys for a week all expense paid by our company for an "administrator conference" and a week later the Medical director and his entire family also go to the keys for a week, all expenses paid (mind you this was also his wife and 3 kids) for a medical directors meeting! I was the DON and also salary working 60 hour weeks, covering the floor also as the only RN as they were too cheap to hire another full-time RN. Oh by the way I dont buy anything if I cant pay cash. So I think I live within my means.

CardioMadeline,

I cant say I dont scratch my head when the hospital can play fix up but cant pay cost of living increases...and like I said...I think the sacrifices should be across the board.CEO'S and all.

Hospital's don't have a single 'bank acct' that they pay everything out of.

They can't take State/Federal/Donor dollars that were applied for or earmarked for improvements and shift it to pay another 'bill'. Hospital improvements, even minor ones are years in the making and involve contracts that would cost money if canceled.

I agree 100% with the poster who said there needs to be better dialog, for many the lack of raises would be a less bitter pill to swallow if it was explained why 'improvements' happen while hoped for raises are shelved.

As for the high execs not getting their raises & bonuses - they have contracts that provide those benefits just as any union employee does. A common theme in some of the posts in this thread are that union employees are getting their raises, would we ask them to sacrifice them across the board too?

No, they had as much sense as the CEO , ie. they got themselves a contract !

Moral of story , we should all have contracts , the only way a nurse is going to get one is through a union contract . If contracts are so good for one employee eg. the CEO , they should be good for all employees .

This month, the bigwigs at my job announced that they are installing new furniture, new carpeting, and wifi in the buildings.

No one is getting pay raises this year. We may not get the H1N1 vaccine because the elderly are at low risk. They're not sure if they will have seasonal flu vaccine for direct caregivers. If they do, nurses who want the flu vaccine may have to pay for it.

At my last job, I went 4 years without a review, never mind a raise. Fortunately, as an RN, I have options.
