There won't be any raises this year

Published

My sister & I are both nurses in different areas of practice at different hospitals in different communities, but both of our hospitals have told us that the staff will not get raises. Is anyone one experiening this at their hospitals? I've only been a nurse for a year now sp this would have been my first raise, but I won't be getting one at all now. There is a lot of frustration at my hospital over it. Recently, over a million dollars was spent to upgrade the orthopedic unit including all single rooms, flat panel TVs, a family room with cappicino machine and granite countertops through out the unit. They've also recently revamped out court yard; ripping out existing trees & putting more benches and lamdscaping. My coworkers are angry because the is money in the budget for those things, but not to give the nurse who work so very hard a cost of living increase. Any thoughts on this subject? Anyone with similar things happening?

Shame on all of you who are upset about not getting your raise this year.

1. You should be thankful you have health benefits.

2. You should be thankful you have a dependable paycheck.

3. You should be thankful you have the chance to make a difference.

4. You should use your energy in support of universal health care.

Yes we all work very hard and under extremely difficult circumstances, however next time you see the flat screen TV's and new furnishings for the hospital, just remember that is someone else's greed and praise to your God that it is not yours to own.

Good fortune will come to those not looking for it. Remember why you became a nurse - I hope it wasn't for the $$

i am very grateful i have a job and all those things , but with the cost of living increases i need more moola like everyone else, i have a family husband and 6 kids, yes we have flat screen and a pool and other nice things.. but we worked for those and deserve them.. .... when it comes down to it ..i need money like everyone else and i hope i get my full 5% raise .. that i worked hard for all year.... gimme my moola !!! :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:no shame here !!

I am very grateful for my job....also very grateful that I received my raise, especially after reading about how many of you have remained at the same place and even taken cuts!!!

Also, in general, the more our income rises the more the economy is stimulated... right?

For example, we are building a deck (hiring someone to do that).

If our income had not gone up, we may not have made that choice. Now the deck guys have more money to spend....they will spend that money to increase the wealth of someone else, and on and on...

Are you freakin' serious?

Like a lot of people, I DID go into nursing to help people, but that doesn't mean that I don't expect to be compensated accordingly and that doesn't mean forgoing a raise just because of "someone else's greed".

I am thankful I have health benefits.

I am thankful for a dependable paycheck.

I love being able to make a difference.

I absolutely will NOT support a universal health care system. When you have politicians that admit they haven't even read the proposal, yet support it anyway, that speaks volumes. Why should they care, since they would be exempt! I do not want the health benefits that I am thankful for to disappear because my employer suddenly doesn't have to offer them anymore because of some craptastic government plan!

Hey, you've got a job. You missed the recession by one year.

Me, I'm glad dh has a job (no raise) but I sure wish I had one too.

We got our 'raise' this year due to our contract (we are unionized) but in reality we really didn't get one due to annual increases in our insurance (about 3 years now) I for one, am not complaining. I look around and see people losing their jobs, their homes and benefits and I count my blessings.

We negotiate our contracts next year and I am kind of worried how it will go. I don't expect a raise, plus I think some of our perks will be taken away (bonuses for picking up on your weekend off, tuition reimbursement, etc) I am willing to give up some of those things if it means they can avoid laying off people, but I'm not sure about my fellow coworkers. I'll just have to wait and see.

I know other industries have taken paycuts and lost benefits (the airline industry comes to mind) those people were just as deserving of their pay and they took cuts..when it comes down to it, most will stay and tough it out if it means keeping a job.

Do we get recommended for sainthood after all this? Hmm are you a single widowed parent with 2 kids to raise, pay your bills on your own with no support else where? I am so I'll say give me a raise!!!!!

The RNs where I work belong to a very large union. Our hospital HAS to give us raises or they'll know we'll strike. We striked a few years ago because they didn't believe we actually would strike. In the end, we got exactly what we demanded and the hospital lost millions of dollars because they had to staff the entire hospital (a very large hospital) with agency nurses and defer most patients to other institutions. As we have it now: we are among the highest paid in our area (socal is high to begin with, but we are higher than the average), and we get a mandatory of 2 raises per year (which must be a certain percentage of hourly wage - i forgot the value. I think it's something like 4%). Our two raises is the cost of living one (I think that's by law anyway), and then we get a yearly raise after our evaluation. I'm just a simple minded employee, but I think having a union is a GREAT thing. It's like house insurance but for my job. I'd have to REALLY do something stupid to get fired. Otherwise, my job is is safe. My hospital can't even lay off nurses because the union won't let them... it's fantastic! Anytime I or any other nurse feels like we've been an unfair warning or something, we call our union rep who then calls our management and our management magically erases any marks against us. This past month I got a $4 dollar per hour raise when much of the country is getting laid off/reduced hours/demoted/etc, etc, etc! I can not complain! My hourly rate is insanely high for someone with just a 2 year degree. I must say I find it incredible at what I make for only have a 2 year degree. To be honest, I think it's an insult to people with bachelor's and master's degree because they had to work much harder and longer than I had to, and they won't even touch what I'm making. I'm living in a high-end condo that is guard-protected, I have no debt other than what's left of my condo loan, I take expensive vacations to basically anywhere in the world I choose, I bought a brand new $60,000 Mercedes, I haven't cleaned my house since I started working because I hire someone else to do it for me now, and lastly, in my own little world I only work 3 days a week (sometimes more if I feel like it). Other people work several days a week, do back breaking work, make barely enough to buy Frosted Flakes, and have no or crummy health insurance. Here I am, with a TWO YEAR DEGREE, making what I shouldn't be making with only a 2 year degree. It's unfair to everyone else but I'm not going to complain.

Where do you live? :)

i hate that we have to have the attitude of "just feel glad you have the job" on one hand--yeah--in this economy we ARE lucky--on the other hand it does always feel like us worker bees get the short end of the stick. you try to advocate for respect, to be valued as a professional, which we should do, but then there's always the "well, you could NOT have a job...." it's tricky. seems like we can't win for losin'.
question .... have you ever been laid off for extended periods of time, with a family to help support and unemployment run out while you're in school ??? Yeah, you'd "feel glad you have a job". Believe me ..... but, yeah, "worker bees" do seem to get the short end .... unfortunately, it's seemingly the "American way" and unlikely to change much, at least in my lifetime.

If NO ONE got a raise hospital wide from the CEO down I could live with it, BUT if the CEO, CFO, upper management were all getting their raises and bonuses I would be LIVID. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.
