The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

I watched this yesterday. I appreciated the straightforward timelines presented. And the explanations of  the laws and possible defense.

Do you suppose that Trump supporters actively avoid watching things like that?

The one former Trump lawyer does make a valiant effort regarding First Amendment, but no, without direction from Dear Leader, they aren't going to watch.

Trump got a court victory.

The federal judge overseeing former President Trump's federal 2020 election trial officially postponed its March 4 start date indefinitely while his claim of presidential immunity remains on appeal.

Until that 3 judge appeals court finalize and write their opinion, Trump gets to imagine that he has immunity from prosecution.  The panel seemed very skeptical when they heard Trump's case on January.

I'm not sure whether he truly believes he has immunity; or he's just kicking the can down the road until after the election, hoping he'll win and can use that to delay the trial until after 2029 when he leaves office.

Either way, I think they're both Hail Mary's.

It's a big assumption that Trump would ever leave office if elected again.  His current political influence makes it likely that too many elected and appointed Republicans, and their constituents, would rubber stamp that un-American notion without much push back.  Succession of Trump power would probably follow some planned transition, DJTJ perhaps.  The RNC would make it all look "official" of course.  That's how most authoritarian leaders dismantle democracies.

I seriously doubt that he'll find the support necessary to completely disregard the Constition and either refuse to leave office or instill his chosen successor.

Apparently I have considerably more faith in the Constitution and belief that, push come to shove, the vast majority will choose the Constitution.

I think Trump is going to test that, and so far, he has lots of support from inside Congress and state houses across the country.  Just consider what Trump and his Republicans have already normalized in our culture and government.

Seeing as how the appeals court is taking so how, the immunity issue may actually not be a Hail Mary.

Why would they be taking so long after first rushing to hear it?

It would be talking long because they are likely using a meticulous approach to the question of presidential immunity.  Having said that, they only heard Trump's argument that he should enjoy total immunity in January.  It's common for they're decisions to take months. Most legal analysts expect their opinions to run in the hundreds of pages and to be issued before the Summer.

The judges sounded pretty skeptical of Trump's legal argument for immunity so many are wondering if the court will write unanimous opinions. It will be interesting to read, regardless.

Acruslly, many legal experts are surprised a decision hasn't come yet.

Also most legal experts are agreeing that his immunity appeal will be rejected.

Trump benefits from delays.

Sure.

I wonder why this is a topic of discussion, how long they take; versus the unprecedented behaviors and attitudes from Trump that got us here in the first place. Oh wait, the time is probably what the right wing media is talking about rather than talking about the claims that a president could order Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political opponent who is widely perceived to be a threat to our national security (stealing and hiding military secrets) or to our constitution (conspiring to overthrow election results while degrading confidence in our elections), and be immune from prosecution. Of course Trump fans want to talk about how long it takes for the judge's to decide that is a ridiculous contention rather than to talk about that power that Biden currently owns... according to Trump. They don't want to talk about the reality that Kamala Harris gets to certify the vote next January.  Should she follow the Trump belief or the constitution.

Yep. That's why Trump supporters are certain that how long it takes to write an unimpeachable decision against Trump is the real story.  "Why did it take so long, it must be a conspiracy" fits so well with the it's all a "hoax" or "witch hunt" narratives.
