The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Former President Donald Trump on Friday said it would be "very disloyal" for his former Cabinet members to run against him in a 2024 Republican presidential primary, sending a firm message to those mulling over potential White House candidacies.

During a Fox News Radio interview with host Brian Kilmeade, Trump boasted of his continued dominance among GOP voters by pointing to the strong primary leads that he continues to hold in most public polling.

Trump has not yet declared a 2024 candidacy but is widely thought to be waiting until after the November midterm elections to announce his intentions. Vice President Mike Pence and other former members of the Trump administration have also been highlighted as potential challengers.

Former President Donald Trump has "repeatedly" discussed choosing Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene as his 2024 running mate, The New York Times Magazine journalist Robert Draper told the Daily Beast.

Speaking on this week's episode of the Daily Beast's "The New Abnormal" podcast, Draper claimed the discussions have been ongoing for months.

Draper, the author of "Weapons of Mass Delusion: When the Republican Party Lost Its Mind," told the podcast that Trump has toyed with the idea of selecting Greene to join his ticket since February of this year.

I loathe her.  Perfect match for Trump.

At the end of the day she has to be reckoned with because she has a voice, she raises money, and she can continue the stranglehold that election deniers and conspiracy theorists have on the public.

Some of her tweets straight out of the Trumpism playbook:

Oct. 22:    Years from now people are going to say in disgust, there was a time in America where legislators fought to slaughter full-term babies, castrate boys, cut breast off of girls, and destroy women’s privacy & sports by allowing men inside. History will not be kind. Nor will God.

Democrats have created a complete open border national security crisis at our southern border. We must put the military at the border and stop the cartel’s daily invasion of human trafficking & deadly drugs. No other country in the world allows this. Impeach Biden & Mayorkis!

Impeach Merrick Garland and defund the FBI. We must clean house in the DOJ and FBI and Republicans in the House can accomplish that by line item changes in the budget. The DOJ & FBI have become political weapons terrorizing and persecuting conservatives & Trump supporters.

Oct. 21:   When are you going to subpoena @SpeakerPelosi for refusing to secure the Capitol on January 6th by purposely refusing President Trump’s requests for the National Guard to protect the Capitol? Nancy Pelosi knew the intelligence reports and wouldn’t bring in the NG.

If Trump and Greene were in the White House I would seriously consider moving to Portugal (My friend knows someone that is moving there because of Florida/American politics) or claiming my German half and move to Berlin.  I don't think I could take it.

Here's a readable opinion on the subject.

The idea of tackling the “root causes” of migration and asylum flows is the kind of high-minded notion likely to be dismissed by politicians such as Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis, who brag that they are actually doing something about the immigrants showing up at the US-Mexico border while other officials just talk. Yet a look at the reasons why so many Venezuelans are seeking asylum shows that there are some pretty obvious steps the US could take that would reduce incentives to make the perilous journey.

Venezuela is subject to some fairly crippling economic sanctions first imposed under President Donald Trump and continued by Joe Biden. The sanctions are hardly the only cause of Venezuela’s economic misery, but they do contribute to it — indeed, that’s the whole point. If the US lifted the sanctions, the economic situation in Venezuela would improve and fewer people could come.

If the US doesn’t want to lift sanctions, then it has an obligation to do something for the people fleeing.

That doesn’t necessarily need to mean giving them permission to live and work in the US. After all, to get from there to here requires first passing through a number of countries, with Venezuela’s neighbor Colombia as the first stop. Republicans who think the arrival of Venezuelans at the border is an intolerable burden should consider how much more difficult the situation is for the authorities in Bogota, who are dealing with a much larger flow of people and have fewer resources. Where is the legislation appropriating a multibillion-dollar aid package for Colombia to resettle Venezuelan refugees as an alternative to them heading north to the US?

Republicans Have a Special Obligation to Venezuelan Migrants

Those who oppose lifting US sanctions on Venezuela owe a duty to the people fleeing deprivation and despair.

Spoiler alert: These steps do not include loading the migrants onto buses or airplanes and sending them to blue states.

And this is what rankles so much about recent stunts by Abbott, of Texas, and especially Florida’s DeSantis. Their goal is to discomfit Democratic Party politicians by dumping asylum seekers in their states with deliberately minimal preparation.

As a midterm election stunt, this is excellent stuff. The polling is very clear that the public does not approve of Biden’s handling of immigration, yet trusts Democrats much more than Republicans on the question of abortion rights. So Republicans will do whatever they can to increase the salience of immigration and reduce that of abortion. (Even me writing a column complaining about the cynicism of this gambit plays into their hands! It’s genuinely a very good political gambit.)

Republicans don't have an immigration plan unless you call using immigration to create animus, anxiety and agitation among conservative voters a plan. What was Trump's plan beyond cruelty and name calling?

Don't forget moats with alligators, shooting asylum seekers in the legs, and bombing Mexican cartel drug labs. Stable genius.

The Trump Tapes: 20 interviews that show why he is an unparalleled danger

Quote

In more than 50 years of reporting, I have never disclosed the raw interviews or full transcripts of my work. But after listening again to the 20 interviews I conducted with President Donald Trump during his last year as chief executive, I have decided to take the unusual step of releasing them. I was struck by how Trump pounded in my ears in a way the printed page cannot capture....

In the “The Trump Tapes,” I share my personal reporting journey through the eight hours of interviews. I provide commentary at more than 200 points in the audiobook, explicitly offering my own reactions, hesitations, conclusions, and explanations of my method of gathering and confirming information.

Trump joins conspiracists stoking doubts about Pelosi attack

Our enemies are busy telling conservative Americans why they should hate liberals and why they may need to resort to violence to achieve political victory.

I agree that there are extremists out there in the name of patriotism have violent rhetoric but that's an extreme.

I think that when those extremists act out they want to deny it exists by casting doubt on the victim rather than trust the process.

Like we saw with Jussie Smollett I think any holes in the story, such as he was at a gay bar (at aged 82) and picked up a male prostitute would come out.  That a prostitute is covering up by saying he targeted his wife and planned on others, rather than throwing him under the bus seems far fetched but again I think it would come out in due time.   Stranger things have happened.

That extremism is pretty closely adjacent to daily republican rhetorical and political discourse today... right wing extremists are proud republican members of congress. Far fetched conservative beliefs and claims are the normal now in the era of Trump and Qanon.

Ask yourself again, what is the end game?

Clearly wild *** speculation is more acceptable in some cases.
