The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

There's a problem with integrity and honor in republican politics just now.

I guess to be respectful we have to preface our talk with "some, not all Republicans".  But I do have to agree that MAGA Republicans, fringe and minority though they may have caused a problem with integrity and honor in Republican politics.  One only has to look as far Marjorie Taylor Greene and her hatefulness and politicians that deny the election.

The election outcomes, nevertheless, highlight how currying Trump’s favor and emulating his brand of hard-right populism — including by parroting his doubts about the integrity of elections — has become a widespread tactic among candidates looking to secure primary wins by appealing to Trump’s base.

As to why he still gets press, well he's that powerful.  Because "some, not all Republicans" are really quite a lot of people.

I don't think that we have to say "some but not all republican politics" when the leadership of the republican party has an obvious problem with integrity and honor and that same problem is found throughout republican candidates at all levels of government.  I think we are at a point where the honorable conservatives have fled or are fleeing that label of "republican". Honor and integrity can't stand shoulder to shoulder with lies and un-American aspirations.

Democracy Challenged

They Legitimized the Myth of a Stolen Election — and Reaped the Rewards

On the day the Capitol was attacked, 139 Republicans in the House voted to dispute the Electoral College count. This is how they got there.

Quote

...The votes to reject the election results have become a badge of honor within the party, in some cases even a requirement for advancement, as doubts about the election have come to define what it means to be a Trump Republican.

The most far-reaching of Mr. Trump’s ploys to overturn his defeat, the objections to the Electoral College results by so many House Republicans did more than any lawsuit, speech or rally to engrave in party orthodoxy the myth of a stolen election. Their actions that day legitimized Mr. Trump’s refusal to concede, gave new life to his claims of conspiracy and fraud and lent institutional weight to doubts about the central ritual of American democracy.

Even lawmakers who had been among the noisiest “stop the steal” firebrands took refuge in Mr. Johnson’s narrow and lawyerly claims, though his nuanced argument was lost on the mob storming the Capitol, and over time it was the vision of the rioters — that a Democratic conspiracy had defrauded America — that prevailed in many Republican circles.

That has made objecting politically profitable. Republican partisans have rewarded objectors with grass-roots support, paths to higher office and campaign money. Corporate backers have reopened their coffers to lawmakers they once denounced as threats to democracy. And almost all the objectors seeking re-election are now poised to return to Congress next year, when Republicans are expected to hold a majority in the House....

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social website last week, wrote that McConnell must have a "death wish" after supporting a continuing resolution to fund the federal government.

Trump went on to criticize McConnell's wife in racist terms, writing that he should "seek help and advise [sic] from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!" Trump was referring to Elaine Chao, who is Taiwanese. Chao served as Trump's transportation secretary until she resigned after Jan. 6

Senator Scott had trouble speaking to the realities surrounding Trump's preferred speech.  There's an interesting contrast as we are reminded regularly that GOP voters are really fixated on Biden's speech while they essentially ignore Trump's inappropriate and dangerous communications.

Litigation Tracker: Pending Criminal and Civil Cases Against Donald Trump updated 9/29/22

Quote

On both the criminal and civil litigation fronts, former President Donald Trump faces a bevy of lawsuits and investigations, with more cases likely to follow. Some are civil suits stemming from his pre-presidential business dealings. Others are defamation claims from women he allegedly assaulted. More still are criminal probes and civil actions that scrutinize his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Chart below tracks all these cases. It will be continually updated as major legal developments occur.

These cases bear on two pressing questions. First, will Trump maintain his long streak of eluding legal liability in the face of so many lawsuits? Second, if Trump is held to account for illegal conduct, what impact will such a development have on his—and his family’s—political and business fortunes?,,

Today's lawsuit:  Trump asks Supreme Court to intervene in dispute over Mar-a-Lago search and seizure of documents

Former Pres. Trump’s filing came after an appeals court granted the Justice Department’s request to keep about 100 classified documents separate from an independent review.  Trump’s lawyers asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to intervene in the Mar-a-Lago documents-seizure case, saying the special master appointed in the matter should be allowed to review the classified papers.  Trump team sent request to Justice Clarence Thomas who has jurisdiction over the11th Federal Circuit court.

Yup - which is why we voted him out.

Demonizing Trump is great sport, for a while at least. However, one of the factors affecting the kneecapping of our democracy is the Democratic obsession with high-level national offices, ignoring the unglamorous local and state races. Schools and elections are both controlled locally. If we want to head off the crazy before we turn into Animal Farm, those are the areas where we need to pay lots more attention.

Someone listening to Trump’s rally comments might have pictured documents from the first Bush administration being scattered carelessly in bowling lanes. But that’s not what happened. The Washington Post reported in 1993: “There aren’t any lanes anymore. No gutters, no pins, no beer. Thanks to a rush remodeling job after last November’s election, there are a few simple offices, a massive, fire-resistant vault and row after row of steel shelves filled with cardboard boxes and wooden crates.”

Facts first...oh wait I'm sorry facts don't matter.  Let's just make up alternative facts to make Trump look like the victim.

Trump understands that his most devoted fans are so poorly informed that these facts are meaningless to them.  They aren't swayed by facts, they are stirred up by emotionally charged language.

DOJ to SCOTUS: Steer clear of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago case appeal

It is the latest in a winding legal drama that will likely carry on for months.

By Josh Gerstein and Kyle Cheney

The Justice Department is asking the Supreme Court to turn down former President Donald Trump’s bid to get a set of about 100 documents marked as classified back into the hands of an independent “special master” reviewing materials seized from his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar said in a brief filed Tuesday afternoon that there’s no reason for the high court to step into the dispute over what role the court system should play, if any, in overseeing investigators’ access to the records the FBI recovered from Trump’s Florida home.

Trump is seeking to get the records with classified markings back into the special master review in what appears to be an attempt to raise arguments that he declassified the records while he was president or that he declared them to be personal files not subject to the Presidential Records Act.....
