The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

It looks like Trump won't be having an outdoor inauguration.  The Capitol Rotunda will be an easier space to fill with spectators and the cold wind won't mess up his hair.

Not to mention all those embarrassing photographs.

What a glorious return to the political threads after Trump's win.  These forums have suffered without this kind of commentary.

I imagine that the Trump supporters who have traveled to DC to witness the inauguration were distressed to discover that they wasted their money and will have to watch the hoopla from their hotel rooms.  Those Trump supporters who work outside in inclement weather just learned that the old man they elected is too fragile and frail to give a speech in above zero temperatures.

Maybe the billionaires will reimburse them in appreciation for their support and inconvenience.

As an Alaskan you can say that.  As a Floridian, which Trump is now as well,  I can tell you that below 70 is too cold nevermind the 20s.   I  can appreciate he doesn't want to put people through that.  Don't be catty.

Another rumor I read on line was that area hotel bookings were at 70%, less than expected, and Trump worried about the appearance of a crowd.

It would be a nice gesture if the inauguration committee would take some of those millions of dollars donated and reimbursed the Trump loyalists who traveled to with the ceremony.

Lots of Americans live where Winter temperatures in the 20s is nothing to change plans about.  Of course people from Florida need more support in those temperatures. There are ways to heat that immediate area that the president elect would occupy. Long underwear is pretty sophisticated these days.   I've been in outdoor venues that were down right toasty when there was a wind break and efficient use of radiant heaters.

Catty or not, I think that tens of thousands of Trump's supporters spent money to get themselves to DC knowing that the forecast was calling for deep cold.  I can imagine that they are disappointed that the traditional outdoor and public inauguration had been moved to a much smaller indoor venue.

Dh is watching a football game being played outside in 25 degrees. A football game is generally 3 hours long, and the stadium looks full.

Those people live there and are used to it and can make that choice to go to a football game.  Still canceling an event in subfreezing weather when there's an alternative seems reasonable.  The spectators got some notice.  Meh...there's enough to criticize him for but this isn't it for me.

I admit there are plenty events is cold weather.

At least some support is being given to the MAGA crowd from you guys.

I actually didn't take seriously the first post criticizing him for this.

Apparently,  it was serious.  Silly me.  LOL.

Evidently there will be a place for his supporters to be together and view it live.

"We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade," Trump said in part. "I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In."

I suppose one can argue that it's reasonable to change the venue to a much smaller indoor space for this reason.  Just like one could argue that the change was made out of concern for the wellbeing of the thousands of spectators who wanted to be part of the historic inauguration.  I also don't think this is important other than its just another look at Trump's decision-making, his priorities, and motivations.

There are likely to be lots of things to talk about in the coming years.
