The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

The threat of tariffs at work.

"The Mexican government is working hard to break up migrant caravans trying to make the treacherous journey north to the U.S. ahead of President-elect Trump's inauguration in less than two weeks' time.

Faced with the prospect of massive tariffs on goods under the new administration, Mexico has been dispersing migrants throughout the country to keep them far from the U.S. border, including dropping them off at the once vibrant tourist hotspot of Acapulco, a beach resort town on Mexico's Pacific coast made famous by the jet set in the 1950s and '60s."

In my opinion, potential voters were just sick of him, sick of hearing about what a loser he is, and stayed home.

Yes, interesting perspective.  I don't agree.

I do think there were a segment of voters that stayed home.  I think part of the reason was disillusion with Biden/Harris over things like inflation and the support of Israel, but they couldn't stomach voting for Trump.

Apparently overall voter turnout was down but Trump motivated his base more than Harris could.

I'm sure this will be analyzed to death.

Heard these discussions  today why Trump interested in Greenland

A geopolitical timeline of Greenland

  • 1946 | United States offers to buy Greenland
  • 1950 | US opens Thule Air Base
  • 1972/1973 | The Kingdom of Denmark enters European Communities
  • 1979 | The Kingdom of Denmark grants home rule...

There was more to Trump's offer to buy Greenland than the callous bravado of a property mogul. Greenland's geostrategic importance is recognised by all the great powers, except, perhaps the EU

Trump's failed attempt to buy the autonomous territory of Greenland was not a first: after the Second World War, in 1946, President Truman also attempted to buy the constituent of the Kingdom of Denmark. Only four years later, the US opened Thule Air Base, currently the US Armed Forces' northernmost base, demonstrating US interest in the area.

As Greenland was not autonomous until 1979 it joined the European Community as a county, following the Kingdom of Denmark's accession in 1973; six years later, Greenland was granted home rule. Subsequently, in 1982 Greenland voted to leave the European Community, and actually left in 1985, to obtain the status of an EU overseas country and territory (OCT). Similar to Iceland's motivations to not accede the EU, Greenland left the EEC following disagreements over Common Fisheries Policy and to regain autonomy over Greenlandic fish resources.

In 2008, Greenlanders voted in favour of the Self-Government Act. This Act provided the Greenlandic authorities with increased autonomy, including the possibility 'to negotiate and conclude international agreements with foreign states and international organisations, which exclusively concern Greenland and entirely relate to the fields of responsibility taken over by Greenland'.[67] Matters that directly affect defence and security policy are not covered by the Self-Government Act. Nevertheless, this Act leaves room for Greenland to conclude agreements with foreign states, including China.

Given the strategic Arctic coastal dimension and the enormous reserves of natural resources, Greenland is highly attractive to foreign states, including China. China's interest in Greenland is recent – it dates back to 2005 when the then-Premier of Greenland, Hans Enoksen, paid a visit to China. In 2011, Greenland's minister for industry and natural resources was the next to pay a visit to China, being welcomed by the vice-premier.[68] Chinese interest in Greenland's natural resources has been confirmed with the visit of China's then-Minister for Land and Resources, Xu Shaoshi, in April 2012.[69] The various visits carried out by representatives of both China and Greenland demonstrate their mutual interests. While for China the focus is on polar research, natural resources and infrastructures, Greenland is looking for investments to further develop its economy,[70] as currently, China serves mainly as one of the most important markets for the Greenlandic fishery industry.[71] ...

Donald Trump has reopened his bid to seize Greenland. Here's why it's not an empty threat

President-elect could capitalize growing desire in Greenland for independence

,,,But within Greenland, the reaction was more muted. That's because, amid an ongoing push for independence from Denmark, the U.S. is certain to be a key player in the territory's future.

And while politicians like Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte B. Egede have been adamant that Greenland "is not for sale and will never be for sale," there's a reason to believe that Trump's threat may carry some weight this time around.

Just like the many grave and ominous predictions of what "Trump will do" this will most likely turn out the same way. It's not like we haven't heard a "warning" like this before  that never makes it to fruition.  " he's really going to do this this time.......it's not a empty threat.......but for real, he's definitely going to do it this time" again and again.....  There no fruit on this over beaten tree that has rarely ever bared fruit.

Did you want him to do these things?

You probably didn't want him to "build the wall", "repeal and replace Obamacare" and wouldn't have agreed with anything discussed in "infrastructure week" anyway.

So as far as I can see, Trump didn't do the things you did not argree with. Tell me why you

Take the win.

I do not understand this post. Can you clarify what does "Tell my why you

Take the win" mean?

I would be fine if Trump didn't do much of anything during his second term. He should leave the same cabinets heads in place, allow Congress to pass a budget, as the Constitution dictates, and show up for the occasional state funeral.

We are better off if he just shuts up and stops trying to bully allies and stops sucking up to dictators and autocrats. And he needs to kick the tech bros to the curb.

Oh, is that why you suddenly disappeared on election night and for the months since?

Anyway, I'm glad things have settled down for you.

Happy reading!

For kicks, you also might want to dig into the history of Jack Smith's mistrials and overzealous prosecutions.

To be fair if you look at her history there is a political post on January 3rd and I remember several posts post-election.  You just haven't noticed.

I do think a few of us had to gather ourselves after the defeat of Harris and had to gather ourselves.  Actually there were times this forum was and is toxic, especially post election and I fully understand standing away.  They've been many days you haven't been around either.  Same for me but I have unblocked a couple of posters I blocked for a bit.  LOL

Anyway, Karen, I'm glad things have settled down.

As usual, you make me dig deeper.   But it's easy for us to Google I suppose.  Right wing media of course has many reports.

What's stunning to me even if Trump didn't try to over throw the election, the great lie that he convinced people he won the election, and encouraged a march on the Capital,  doesn't seem to matter. It's fair to look at his history best to focus on Jack Smith instead I guess and forget what Trump did and re-elect him.

I did notice.

Sorry, but if one boasts about how well the election is going for their candidate (as I did), even posting early results from their state that favored their candidate (the last post made before the "sabattatical") they should be grown up enough to stick around and talk about it when they lose.

I did in 2020, and was prepared to again.

So, a little mild ribbing isn't out of line.  And that'll be it.

I'll give her credit though.  At least she did come back.  Welcome back @NRSKarenRN.

A few others completely disappeared and are still in hiding, and at this point really can't reappear with any shred of credibility.

Trump's response was "the people have spoken".  Their belief in him...well. I'll leave it at that.

Glad you're able to be there for your family.
