I really just want to vent and see what people think... I'm in rehab / LTC for starters. During hand-off the aide tells us (me trying to leave after my replacement was late coming in, her apparently not wanting to be there), that one of the pts is sweaty and unresponsive. I jump up and she (wait for it) sets on her butt. I spend the next 45 minutes doing the nursing thing, you know, CARING for people. She (wait for it again) sets on her butt. Can you feel the frustration building yet? I get him stable and responsive, head up to count narcs, and she decides to go get OJ and give him a drink after not having seen him in the hour she's been there. This is all frustrating, I've slept 4 hr in the last 60 and want to be home, but I understand this is what I signed up for...to a point. We get all set finally and I get my stuff together. I do one last check of my hall and she goes in a room to check a light and the little old guy needs the bathroom. She says I can't I have stuff to do. To say I was angry is an understatement. So guess what, I drop my stuff and take care of him. As I'm doing this she walks past, looks in, and says did he need something. Seriously? Did he need something? You just told him he wasn't important. Oh well, venting has helped a little. Now someone entertain me with a good reply.
What the heck do any of the previous few posts have to do with the topic at hand? What I've been seeing a lot of on AN lately is people complain about well, people complaining. Why bother coming on AN to vent about a bad shift or whatever if you get blasted because it's "yet another thread complaining about xyz". If this site was only about discussing "relevent" clinical topics, this site wouldn't be as great as it is. I thought the general nursing forum was for well "general" topics, the "clinical" topics are in the specialty forums. I guess I could be wrong about that.
As far as I'm concered my med cart closes at 9pm, wether I'm done or not so they better ask for what they want before then. If I'm getting report, unless they are bleeding out, they have to wait. I've got places to go, people to see and things to do. I used to say dead, dying, bleeding or on fire. But if they're dead or dying, they are not going anyplace, and if they're on fire. I'm gettin' the heck out of there.
All in fun that was, yes we all work with lazy people and it's frustrating to be running around while others don't seem to be. Why just the other night......Someone could have called me lazy, as I did the least I could do. But they didn't they asked if I was feeling alright. And no I wasn't feeling good, my stomach hurt and my asthma was exacerbating.

Wow.....I hope you are never in the hospital and really need something after 9pm. I think we need to prioritize at the end of the day.........but we need to see to our patients needs..........to ignore someone in distress is negligence and if you aren't feeling good....and you are not going to be able to perform your job safely and effectively.....STAY HOME!!!!
I often log on to Allnurses.com to read and discuss clinical issues to better my knowledge and understanding of medicine. Instead, I continue to find people complaining about lazy co-workers and inferior nurses. Everyone has lazy co-workers in any field of work.......Get used to it. How about discussing something relevant to our profession? That is why we are here....right?
is this post a vent?? is he complaining??
a step further, is crna complaining about other people complaining??

Whoops! You highlighted everything except the part that said it was a joke! I've often use humor to releive my stress and a good ol' the med cart it closed after 9pm while I am getting another something or other after being super busy helps! I don't think I would have surrived in this career for so long if I didn't.
As for the bottem part, now I must defend myself. The least I could do does not mean neglect my patients! It meant I did not help the LNA 'S on their rounds, put the meds away, do a lot of the busy work paper work, or the other little odd jobs night shift does. The people still got their mid night and early morning meds. And pain meds or others if the needed. The got assesed if the needed but they didn't get my usual lovey dovey so sweet it would melt in rain attention.
i think we all know of lazy aides and nurses.
i fully understand why aides need some downtime, in betw shifts.
their job IS demanding, and you need to rest the muscles a bit.
however, if i'm going to give them that consideration, i expect them to do their work.
typically i observe and keep notes to myself.
after the 3rd time of them either being insubordinate or not doing their work, i have a verbal 1:1 warning.
also at this time, i update supervisor, warning him/her that to not be surprised w/a forthcoming writeup.
i'm a very fair/reasonable nurse.
i expect the same in return.
over time it usually works out.
but you can't be passive-aggressive...
you need to be assertive, respectful and articulate w/your expectations.
we're ALL in this together.
it's high time that some nurses and cna's, come to understand this.

CRNA and Diva, I am so glad the two of you are above and beyond the issues that plague us mere mortals. However this is a MESSAGE BOARD, not a site strictly for gaining knowledge in your field. And believe it or not I do visit those too. MESSAGE BOARD. I can vent, ramble, berate, educate, cheer, motivate, and basically do whatever I want (right up to the point the moderator thinks I've gone too far, and I hope this isn't it.) You don't like it, don't reply to it, or even better, don't read it when you realize you don't care. I deal with idiots on a daily basis, I'm glad to see ALLNURSES keeps a few around to make this board seem more like real life. Thank you.
I only read the 1st 2-3 posts, but I think I have a handle on the situation. My advice is to not jump up and take care of these things. Finish report and go home. As long as you give people permission to take advantage of you you can't really blame them when they follow through with it, lol.

Well this is unbelievably rude. Had I read this first, I would not even have bothered to reply.
So, uh, good luck with all that.

Well, if that's the way it has to be, then I guess all of the students will have to hang out in the student forum and the CRNAs will hang out in their forum..and never the twain shall meet......Rhody won't like that one at all....
