The Things I've Seen Today...

Nurses General Nursing

I really just want to vent and see what people think... I'm in rehab / LTC for starters. During hand-off the aide tells us (me trying to leave after my replacement was late coming in, her apparently not wanting to be there), that one of the pts is sweaty and unresponsive. I jump up and she (wait for it) sets on her butt. I spend the next 45 minutes doing the nursing thing, you know, CARING for people. She (wait for it again) sets on her butt. Can you feel the frustration building yet? I get him stable and responsive, head up to count narcs, and she decides to go get OJ and give him a drink after not having seen him in the hour she's been there. This is all frustrating, I've slept 4 hr in the last 60 and want to be home, but I understand this is what I signed up for...to a point. We get all set finally and I get my stuff together. I do one last check of my hall and she goes in a room to check a light and the little old guy needs the bathroom. She says I can't I have stuff to do. To say I was angry is an understatement. So guess what, I drop my stuff and take care of him. As I'm doing this she walks past, looks in, and says did he need something. Seriously? Did he need something? You just told him he wasn't important. Oh well, venting has helped a little. Now someone entertain me with a good reply.

One can vent without being exceptionally rude to people who take the time to respond. Honestly, "venting" is not an excuse for demonstrating a complete lack of decorum.

Not saying that it's right to reply rudeness with rudeness but those people were rude to OP in their post, don't know if you saw it...

CRNA and Diva, I am so glad the two of you are above and beyond the issues that plague us mere mortals. However this is a MESSAGE BOARD, not a site strictly for gaining knowledge in your field. And believe it or not I do visit those too. MESSAGE BOARD. I can vent, ramble, berate, educate, cheer, motivate, and basically do whatever I want (right up to the point the moderator thinks I've gone too far, and I hope this isn't it.) You don't like it, don't reply to it, or even better, don't read it when you realize you don't care. I deal with idiots on a daily basis, I'm glad to see ALLNURSES keeps a few around to make this board seem more like real life. Thank you.

Dude....you have made it more than clear that you deal with idiot co-workers and how you are more superior than the other nurses around you. All I am saying is that talking smack about your fellow nurse co-workers is stupid. If you have a problem with them and their work ethic then confront them and tell them to do their job. Complaining to strangers may temporarily make you feel better but it will not fix your problem. I see from your profile that you have 1 year of experience. I'm assuming that you are relatively young and that you will have a long and "not so rewarding" career ahead of you with this attitude. After all, you could be working with inadequate co-workers for another 30 years; who knows. Good luck with your career.

Exactly! The patients condition deteriorated in dialysis and should have been addressed IN dialysis.

I am currently staffing a nephrology floor, the majority of patients are dialyzed 3 times a week. I've noted that the hemo nurses feel their only responsibility is to the dialysis machine!

In this case, the procedure was stopped, patient turfed before he crashed any further! And without even a report!!! We gotta start righting this up.

Whoops! You highlighted everything except the part that said it was a joke! I've often use humor to releive my stress and a good ol' the med cart it closed after 9pm while I am getting another something or other after being super busy helps! I don't think I would have surrived in this career for so long if I didn't.

As for the bottem part, now I must defend myself. The least I could do does not mean neglect my patients! It meant I did not help the LNA 'S on their rounds, put the meds away, do a lot of the busy work paper work, or the other little odd jobs night shift does. The people still got their mid night and early morning meds. And pain meds or others if the needed. The got assesed if the needed but they didn't get my usual lovey dovey so sweet it would melt in rain attention.

I completely missed the humor.......my bad. :o Brain fart.... Sorry....:)

CRNA - I was wound up. Actually this is a second career, and much more rewarding than the first. And I may very well be older than you. I just needed to vent and it went downhill from there. Not superior, just more concerned I guess is a better word. No hard feelings?
