The Puberty Talk

Published

Hi all!

I'm a first year certified school nurse and I'll be giving the puberty talk today to the fifth grade girls (I have a male teacher that agreed to cover the boys).

I have a video that covers a majority of the discussion for me, but wanted to see if any of you had any words of advice? Are any of you in charge of the puberty talk? What kinds of questions were you asked that I should prepare myself for?

Thank you!

Those are all great ideas! I love the panties example, I never would have thought of that.

It is a great idea, but don't call them panties. Eww...

I just remembered what my daughter did after her 4th grade presentation (she's 7th grade now). She came home on the bus, I was still working, hubby was in the shower. She knocked on the bathroom door and said she HAD to come in. He told her to and she preceded to tell him about how they learned about their periods and that she had sample pads and tampons, and that she was going to put them away in her drawer that I had set aside for her already. He told me later that he was just standing in the shower, mortified, praying to God she didn't ask him any questions LOL. But lucky for him, she just left after informing him of all that!

How cool is that!

Menstrual huts were also big amongst the Native American tribes. During the heaviest four days of their period, wives would leave their homes and go to this separate menstrual lodge to commune with other women. Since women tend to mense together, these lodges were often quite full and the women inside we encouraged to engage in some serious girl time” by discussing female issues and indulging in creative pursuits like storytelling and arts and crafts.

I didn't write it...just something to think about. *crawls under desk for protection from flying objects*

Yea, we all read The Red Tent.

As many know around here, I teach sex ed for 7th and 8th grade - an entire 3 month unit (which breaks down to 1 class a week per section, about 10 weeks). I love it.

I have a question box. And I can amuse you for day with what ends up in it ;).

I used the Planned Parenthood Get Real curriculum, notify parents when I teach the unit.
