Just a bit ago the top three threads involved:
1.I have a DWI. Can I be a nurse?
2.I am stupid. Can I be a nurse?
3.If it takes me five times to pass NCLEX, Can I be nurse.
Not much left to add. Says it all.
I had a patient kiss me on the hand and another pat me on the butt today. I just don't know what to do, that's crossing the boundry's!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE that these old people actually need physical touch to maintain their health. It's my DREEAAAMMMMM to help people, but how dare they expect me to actually TOUCH them.
Now I am going to go bathe in Lysol and burn my fomite infested scrubs.
I've gotta admit I just don't like that either. I had a patient recently who, when she woke up from anesthesia, kept reaching for my face and pulling at my shirt. I figured out she wanted to pat my cheek (or kiss it, or both as it turned out) but it was more intimacy than I'd care to have had....she did eventually get to kiss me and hug me (and I do appreciate the adoration) but well.....not what I seek out in my day!
I actually really don't mind it. I work in a secured unit for dementia, SDAT, and we have a few geri-pyschs back there. I have a few patients that are actually Wards of the Courts because they either don't have family, family isn't able to, or family doesn't care.
I believe in the healing power of skin to skin touch. Now, don't take me wrong, I do use UP, however, I don't see the harm in pats and touches. I don't necessarily wear gloves when I am taking a blood pressure or applying body lotions or creams (it all depends) and I don't personally kiss my patients, but I'll blow kisses. I don't mind a little slobber on my uniform (if that is the worse thing that gets on it during the course of a shift, then Hallelujah), and if they want to kiss my hands or pat me on the butt or back, that is okay too. As long as it is appropriate. I have some male patients that I don't allow that with.
I think it depends on your own comfort level, and that's okay. I try to protect myself as much as possible, but I tend to be comfortable with a lot of stuff.
Soooo, should I drink tequila or whiskey before I drive? It's my drrreeeeeaaaaammmm to drive drunk, I need advises Please Help ASAP! I have to loose my license! Or should I just shoplift? Or drive my car into a house?? I'm so confused! The fomites are eating my brain!
Set that license loose!! Let it run wild and free. Just put a GPS tag on so you don't lose it okay?
I recommend the tequila: 1 tequilla 2 tequilla 3 tequilla FLOOR!

I forgot to mention that I'm 65. Am I too old? The great-grandchildren are in kindegarten and the granddaughter is out of jail now so I figure its a good time to go to nursing school before that other hip gives out.
While I am laughing like crazy at this.....(and I am not 65)...I have had BOTH of my hips and BOTH of my knees replaced....so it hits a little too close to home....and I am still schlepping away at work...
Retirement? Actually, that's my DREEEEEEAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(but, you know, I have to keep working to deliberately keep my job away from those younger, thinner and prettier new nurses! Because that's what we crusty old bats do!)
