The HARD Truth for most nurses

Published

IS the hard truth for most nurses definitely new grads is that poop cleaning and urine collection RN jobs are all that is open?

Pretty much bedside care, running around like a chicken with your head cutoff.

I don't think ICU solves the issue either.

Definitely thinking about different degree, since experience is the only way to open up other nursing positions, but I am not about to work bedside for 10 years. I would rather go back to school.

I have a couple of months of bedside experience so is there anything else I can do besides bedside care? If not I have no choice to move on.

There is no way I can pursue marriage a family by bringing home income this way. Just not going to happen.

Lol...does anyone like to clean poop? No. But seriously now....what did you expect? It's a bit strange to go into a field that involves taking care of people when you in fact....don't want to take care of people. If nursing isn't for you, then you need to do something different otherwise you will hate your life and dread going to work. I would recommend PA school. Sounds like you want to call the shots, not do the work.

You guys are being extremely harsh. This is supposed to be a support group and rather or not you all agree with what she is saying you are still professionals. :arghh:

If allnurses were a "support group" (only), I would not be here, and I'm sure that's true of a lot of the other members, as well. You post your question or statement, and you get the responses you get. It's not guaranteed to be what you want to hear.

.......aaaannd, we are "OFF DUTY"! This is MY time. I did not enter a convent when I became nurse. Aside from TOS I have no obligation to be 'professional' anything here.

Besides which, OP asked about the HARD truth of nursing.

If this is a support group.....where's the table with the coffee and donuts? :cheeky:

Hey wait a minute! I work clinic---who said it was "cushy"? :sarcastic:

Hey I didn't mean clinic work was cushy just that the type of jobs the OP perceives as cushy aren't really cushy at all. In fact I think clinical work can in fact be quite difficult, especially when one considers the paperwork involved. Of course any job is difficult if you don't approach it with the right attitude. Before I did home care I did Psych for 5 years and while I wasn't cleaning butts I often had to bob and weave to avoid "Flying" body fluids/solids as they were smeared on walls or thrown at me.

The bottom line is nursing is hard work even the so-called "Cushy" jobs. If you have an aversion to hard work you should not be a nurse.

You chose the wrong career! What did you think nurses do? Patient care is the number one job of nurses and I'm sorry that you found out the hard way that sick people tend to do icky things. It is called caring for another human being. Just get out now, you don't seem to have the thing that makes a nurse.

No one says you have to like the feces/urine portion, but your job is to tackle these tasks while not endangering the psychological welfare of your charge. I can only imagine your horror at decubitus ulcer care. You also just insulted all the hard-working nurses who do all of this and have the guts to get married and have families. I think it's time you moved on to another degree.

CKPM2RN, I don't know why that statement in your post tickled me so much, but I have to thank you for the hearty laughing spell it gave me. Hubby thought I'd lost it. It's such a mild and simple statement, or should I say understatement. I am still giggling. :woot:

Or demonstrated what badasses we are..

Two of my classmates went into public health immediately after graduating. It is not true that you HAVE to have experience to get in those jobs. It's just less likely. Maybe you should keep applying to those types of jobs and see what happens instead of declaring it impossible to get one.

You are insulted because this person fears taking on a marriage when they are unhappy with their job? OP has a great head and good heart to not want to take on a long term relationship while in a crisis over a job that makes him/her miserable. Lets keep it real, folks. Nurses are some of the nastiest people on this planet. Always so quick to knock each other down. And always so impressed with themselves hahahahahhaha

Oh how I wish that wiping butts and collecting urine as a nurse , was the hardest part of my job! 🙈

I haven't read "great head" or "good heart" into the OP. Nor do I believe that nurses are some of the nastiest people on the planet. I read an original poster who had done inadequate research into the career before entering it and who was horrified at the thought of actually caring for a patient. And now I'm answering a post from a poster who has a negative opinion of nurses . . . an inaccurately negative opinion.
