The HARD Truth for most nurses

Nurses Professionalism

IS the hard truth for most nurses definitely new grads is that poop cleaning and urine collection RN jobs are all that is open?

Pretty much bedside care, running around like a chicken with your head cutoff.

I don't think ICU solves the issue either.

Definitely thinking about different degree, since experience is the only way to open up other nursing positions, but I am not about to work bedside for 10 years. I would rather go back to school.

I have a couple of months of bedside experience so is there anything else I can do besides bedside care? If not I have no choice to move on.

There is no way I can pursue marriage a family by bringing home income this way. Just not going to happen.

Libby1987--I did Home Health for 9 years and it drew the very best out of me. I think I really 'blossomed' as a nurse; we had the most supportive team and made our own assignments each week from the caseload, so it was doable for each of us. When it was heavy, we all pitched in. It taught me a lot and was fun to me, most of the time. I felt quite sorry for the hospital nurses (4-wall fever :) ) and they, in turn, were horrified that we operated outside of a structured environment.

I think the references to climbing heights and the mountain metaphors remind us that when we first begin to learn things we're really excited. And due to the limited nature of our experience (the bounded nature of our mind) we aren't able to take the long view or see how far knowledge had to come to get us to that point.

Then we see (now we are "more advanced") that there is so much more to learn! We climb! We are so pleased to climb those "towering Alps" and feel like we're walking on air, "tread(ing) the sky."

Soon after that, though, just when we think we've learned it all, we are shocked to see ahead of us how much more there is to learn... "the growing labours of the lengthen'd way." It makes us tired just to look at it, more hills beyond hills, and Alps upon Alps ahead of us.

So whoever thought lifelong education was supposed to be easy? Or any education, really? Isn't that the point, that whoever thinks school and learning isn't supposed to be work has a very immature view? Can't see the hills right ahead of him, as it were?

Whoa, this thread?
